    My routine is to pour myself a dram and do the tasting on my own. Then I have another with Herr Luening and compare "notes." It's like drinking with a friend, if my friends drank anything other than Pendleton and Jack Daniels. This Ardbeg 10 is incredible.

    Horst, an excellent review as usual. But I want to say this: CONGRATS on your superb English! You should be very proud of your command of the English language. I only wish I could speak multiple languages well! I just purchased this whisky tonight based on your review. It is indeed extremely flavorful!

    I bought my first bottle of Ardbeg 10 today. The cheapest I could find was €52 in Ireland. I have seen it for sale for a lot more than that and it is not overly available either. I really like it. Peaty, complex fruity notes. Really oily and intense in the mouth. Aftertaste is long, sweet and pleasant. A fantastic single malt.

    Fantastic video...I just purchased my first bottle of Ardbeg 10 and in all honesty, I was beginning to have a little "buyers remorse". This is my first bottle of peated whisky and I genuinely thought it was going to be my last. I couldn't get past the overpowering "mediciney" note from the peat. You helped uncover those hidden sweet notes and it is quickly growing on me. Thank you Horst!

    I love Horst's review of the Ardbeg 10. He's obviously fond of it and so am I. It's an absolute classic and does everything right. It has a minimum age of 10 years, it's bottled at a healthy 46%, it's not chill filtered and probably not coloured. It's perfectly structured and has a fine mouth feel. And you can still find it for under £40. Springbank 10 is great value too.

    • @ryanandrew7695
      @ryanandrew7695 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      For me ardbeg is oily with an unripe sour pear flavour with a strong alcohol burn and a slight peaty aftertaste, laphroaig is much more medicinal and briney but a bit watery compared to the ardbeg but I still prefer laphroaig to ardbeg

    • @axetwogrind
      @axetwogrind 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Very much prefer Ardbeg 10 over Laphroaig 10....and over Talisker 10 as well. Peat, strength, but a sweet smoothness to it as well which is lacking in the Laphroaig and Talisker. Plus non-colored or chill filtered. Truly a great whisky for the $$....my favorite 10 yr. Now a Talisker 18 is beyond comparison.....in my top 5!

    • @beau_de_jour
      @beau_de_jour 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      damn.. taste sense is so subjective.
      to me the Ardbeg10 is straight peat, no oily things, no sweet end-flavours, just straight peat and smoky, with probably some dark chocolate/coffee dry note in the end.
      But man, the Laphroaig10 yes, was peat, but also a lot of other things, was more complex and it literally evolves in the mouth, I like this type of things in whiskeys

    • @AnimeReference
      @AnimeReference 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Everybody is playing the colour game, even Ardbeg. The green bottle indicates that they find the colour to be a negative but the "not coloured" label to be a positive. And it's so irrelevant. I've heard it argued that you can use colour to infer the flavour of sherried whiskys, but even then distillers use a short and stout bottle so that you are looking through a greater volume of liquid - making it appear deeper/darker. I wouldn't even use colour to discern sherry itself. Maybe rose'.

    You like peat then Ardbeg is the dram for you. Up till 2014 I would have said that Lagavulin 16 was the daddy of whiskies. But Diageo took over the distillery in 1997 and when the first batches came through in 2013 the taste had changed. The peat and complexity have taken a severe hit and the quality has suffered. If only Diageo spent as much time and effort on their whiskies as they do on marketing them (I'm looking at you Ron Swanson), the difference wouldn't have been half as bad.
    No, Ardbeg is now the best peaty Islay in the £50 price point market. Lovely smoke, no E150 colouring or chill filtering......how whisky should be! Horst should do a new Lagavulin 16 review and compare the newer bottlings to the pre-2013's. the difference in quality is startling.

    I will keep this bottle just bcuz it was a gift @$55.. Not the biggest fan bcuz it tastes and smells like it was inolved in a big house fire. Completely over bearing..all the expectations of those caramel and vanilla flavors are not there. Very hard to enjoy. I do enjoy your reviews though .
    Thanks

    i don't get all the hype about the ardbeg. at first it is too smoky afterwards it is too sweet. it kinda tastes like licorice a flavour very many people usually dislike. i prefer a caol ila over an ardbeg any day of the week.

      I think it depends a lot on the batch. I've had older Ardbeg 10's that were incredible, some were really just average.

      As a huge lover of licorice/lakrids, this is perhaps why I like the Ardbeg 10 so much.

      I'm sure you've either discarded your bottle or let friends drink it, but try it with a drop or 2 of water. It'll bring out more flavors and cut the smokiness some.

    If this is the same one I have at home, it is extremely smokey. It's so smokey that other people can smell it in the room while you have it in your glass. I personally dont enjoy drinking this one. Too much going on for me.

      mcscootie Oh yea, I remember buying a bottle, I don’t remember the brand, it smelled like distilled seagull fecal matter, with the added fraquence of rotting seaweed. Quite the stinker, tasted good tough.

    I have tasted dozens of single malts but this has to be one of the worst tasting/smelling whiskeys I have ever purchased. What a waste. It jus sits on my bar waiting for its next victim who dares to pass out from it’s nauseating fumes.
