Or another way to think of preload and afterload is this: think of the heart as a donkey. Think of preload as the weight of the goods the donkey carries on it's back and think of afterload as the inclination of the path it walks on. So, if preload is high - think of the donkey carrying a heavy weight on it's back. Think of afterload as the donkey climbing a very steep hill.
