  • The Bartenieff Fundamentals is the somatic movement method developed by somatic pioneer Irmgard Bartenieff. The "Basic 6" are primary to her method and establish the building blocks for this neuro-developmental approach.
    In this video, I demonstrate one preparatory exercise and the Basic 6 in series as outlined in her book, "Body Movement: Coping with the Environment". I demonstrate each somatic movement and discuss the exercises with Bartenieff’s language from her text as well as from my personal experience. The Basic 6 includes: Thigh Lift, Pelvic Forward Shift, Pelvic Lateral Shift, Body-half, Knee Drop, and Arm Circles. The preparatory exercise included is Rock and Roll.
    I have used these somatic movements and their variations in my own practice and with clients for over 20 years with amazing results. (See my channel page for further explorations). This somatic approach has certainly been a keystone for my own creative and professional work in the movement field and my passion for supporting functional and expressive change by working from the felt-sense, moving from the inside out.

    I have never heard of Bartenieff before.
    I have been doing similar rocking, splicing & rolling movements for many years.
    It helps to calm the external overwhelm from the inside.

    Thank you for your generosity to make this accessible. I live in India and have been researching somatics and practicing it. Your videos have supported me to drop into my body, release, pleasure and play. Somatics really helped me find my dance, and I'm enjoying the phrases you share and your cues. I've been more exposed to feldenkrais and body mind centering and continuum when i was studying at movement research in NYC. But the bartenieff phrases are really wonderful and allow beginners to enter somatic experiences through a lot of playful movements. I think this is my first time finding somatic movement on TH-cam. What a resource, thank you for making the time to share with us

    Kailajune, In order to do the somatic groundwork you so beautifully demonstrate, I feel the need to create a large, open, cushioned-enough-to protect-the-joints exercise surface like you have. Is a large, very padded wool rug that you are moving on?

    • @kailajunekeliikuli
      @kailajunekeliikuli  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, somatic movement and inquiry can be very beneficial fir relieving sciatica. My suggestion is 1:1 sessions to get specific feedback and support in this case.

    Hè, I know these movements from Ruthy Alon's Mindful Spontaneity.

    • @kailajunekeliikuli
      @kailajunekeliikuli  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, so many foundational somatic movement practices are universal in our journey of somatic inquiry. We are called toward our development as we repattern and explore our basic organization.

    • @DrMove1
      @DrMove1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I would add that this work is definitely distinct from Feldenkrais and that of Ruthy Alon. Irmgard Bartenieff and Moshe Feldenkrais were born within the same decade 1900 and 1902 as I recall. The exact dates are in the book Mindful Movement. While there are movements that are similar Bartenieff was focused on connections in the body and integration. There is less repetition in the movement and also less differentiation of body parts in Bartenieff's system. She works with nine concepts that are now all over the world. Likewise Feldenkrais exercises and principles are known world-wide. The 85 years of Bartenieff Fundamentals and The Feldenkrais Method circulating means that some teachers may not be teaching the pure methods anymore. One may recognize wonderful aspects of each and integrate them in classes. Ideally teachers would mention these influences but many dont know the origins of what they are teaching. What is important is that you are taught to pay attention to your own body and follow its sensations and cues as well as the guidance of your teacher/facilitator.

  • @sudhirwise
    @sudhirwise 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    .... And how is all this not feldenkrais?

    • @kailajunekeliikuli
      @kailajunekeliikuli  5 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      There are several somatic pioneers and their subsequent schools/ methods that have a focus on neuro-developmental patterning. This includes Bartenieff Fundamentals and the Feldenkrais Method and others . . . and their vocabularies certainly overlap.

      I think it is fascinating to consider how people in different parts of the world who never met (and long before the internet) were exploring similar lines of thinking and moving at the same time in history.
