Larry Bird - 41 pts vs. Warriors (1988)

  • Bird shooting lights out vs. Warriors. Like usual he had a well rounded game with 10 rebounds and 5 assists.
Rare sight of Sampson in a Warriors uniform. The single Sampson highlight might let on that he still possessed most of his athleticism but there was a clear difference from his former days. There was one play where he couldn't even get up to finish an open alleyoop dunk (got rejected by the rim). After his brief stint with the Warriors, his career was essentially over.

What a display of talent!! Jump hooks, left handers,tip-ins, runners, fadeaways, 3 point bombs, and bank shots. Not to mention great ball fakes, tremendous passes, boxing out, sweeping the boards and diving for loose balls. Nobody has ever had this combination of skills, will to win, ability to deceive opponents. Bird displayed how the western conference was nowhere near as strong as the east.

Bird's first step was quick, but the sudden pull up was unbelievable.

3:40 this sequence of Bird diving for a ball, fumbling it, gaining control for less than a split second, and then popping a perfect pass. And not a light volley. A laser. From the floor. Without having really gained full control. To this day it's mind boggling to see how quick Bird's eye-hand coordination and body control was.

Jordan was by far the more spectacular scorer. In a way Birds lack of athleticism in comparison makes it more difficult shots acrobatic layups and crashing to the floor baskets just as impressive. Granted he did not have the contortionist flare with hang time that Jordan I was blessed to have. There's no shame to either one of these guys being declared as the goat. Your team wins when you have them. But I must say I don't think you'll ever find any player coming close to Larry Bird in terms of physical toughness. There's a video showing that. In the words of the great Ivan Drago he's not human he's like a piece of iron.

Crazy thing is he usually had 10 plus rebounds, near 8 assists and 2-3 steals per game. During his healthy years, he was an absolute assassin. Jordan is NOT the greatest clutch player. What a bunch of shit. No one wanted to guard Larry, not Dominique, not Rodman, Not Kemp. He scored at will on the best athletes of his era. Just watch this game. It's like watching him at Indiana State, he is obviously the best player on the court in all aspects and absolutely DOMINATES the other team by himself, in the NBA for God's sake.

@cbaldwinjr I agree about LA having a great team - I think Kareem is the best center ever. Magic winning over Bird in college was more about MSU being a far better team than ISU. Bird outplayed Magic in 84 and Magic made some blunders in that series. Magic really shined in 87 but in 85 it was still Kareem as MVP. Its too bad Bird had the injuries-I loved watching this matchup. Just my opinion but I still give the edge to Bird. Had he played in the western conference his numbers been incredible

In 88, GS had the same brand of stanchion that Boston Garden had. They were the only two teams that had this particular brand, non Porter or Hydra Rib like almost every other team had. I wouldn't want the kind of rim/stanchion that Bird was accustomed the most to.
