For all the talk about how slow and unathletic he was, he had catlike reflexes to go along with his almost psychic court vision. It's sad that he was injured for most of the second half of his career, because he would have EASILY averaged over 25 PPG for his career during one of the toughest defensive eras in history.

In my opinion, Larry Bird was the greatest all around player to ever step on a basketball court. He rebounded like a center, he passed like a point guard, he was a beast in the low post (where his career started as Maxwell was the sf) and he shot lights out from anywhere on the front court. Oh, did I mention he was also 3 X All NBA 2nd team Defense? 24.3 pts/gm, 10 reb/gm, 6.3 ast/gm, 1.8 stls/gm and the first and two time member of the 50/40/90 club. I believe only Steve Nash is a multiple member and only 7 players have achieved that prestigious shooting line. Consummate team player that over his 897 game regular season career won 660 games for a win percentage of .735. His only Achilles heel was his health….if only……

Bird beat 14 Hall of Famers in Playoff SERIES! Jordan was 0-6 against Bird in the Playoffs. He couldn't win a GAME, let alone a series. For all the Jordan lovers saying he played on a better team, the Celtics record improved by 32 games in Bird's rookie year (29 wins to 61 wins). The REASON the Celtics and his TEAMMATES were so good is because he MADE them BETTER!!!! Magic and the Lakers had 4 #1 OVERALL Draft picks on the 87' and 88' championship teams(Kareem, Worthy, Thompson, and LIAR Magic). Magic PLAYED with Hall of Famers, Bird MADE Hall of Famers!!! And he was NEVER fully healthy when he played, by his own admission. It makes him EVEN GREATER! And he got the best defender EVERY game. I played small time college ball in the 90's in Montana, and I can tell you from experience that the bruthas play a little harder against a white guy. No disrespect at all by that comment🤙! In my opinion, I think Bird is the best that ever played, without question. And it has nothing to do with skin color. I had a grade school coach(1982-83) that taught me the HISTORY of the Celtics, so I knew about Russell, KC and Sam Jones, JoJo White, and the rest of the Celtics. And Bird is coming into the league at that time, so I was VERY FORTUNATE to get to watch and idolize him his whole career🙏🙏! Sorry so long, but I could talk about him and the GREAT stories associated with him for awhile. 2 last things: 1) Magic was guarded by 6'0 point guards most of the time. Go back and see how he did when Rodman, Pippen, and Dennis Johnson guarded him(just had to get one last Laker and FAKER Magic shot in 🤣). 2)My second year in college (Dillon, MT) we got a JC recruit from Wyoming, and he is originally from French Lick, IN. He said Bird is a good, down to earth guy!! It makes it even better when your heroes are GOOD, DECENT PEOPLE!!!! Appreciate all of you newcomers checking out the HISTORY OF BASKETBALL 🤙! MUCH LOVE TO ALL!!!

I really am saddened how many people who were not alive to see Bird play can push his career aside with ignorant comments about his lack of athleticism, can't jump, terrible defense back in the day, etc. I am amazed how he could handle the sheer physicality of the game in the 80's. Many talented players have graced the court since, but many of the things he did taught the next generations what was possible. He would have excelled in ANY era. Michael Jordan learnt many lessons from Bird that helped make him the dominant force that he was. I detest the focus on GOAT conversations when players are not given the respect they deserve. More people need to discuss who are in the conversation of the elite players. In most cases, they are talking about their FAVOURITE player.... There is a top tier, and Larry is tall on that podium.

BTW, I've never actually heard anyone say Larry couldn't play in today's game. Who would actually say that? He was decades ahead of his time with the 3-point shooting. - winning the first 3 long distance shoot outs (and the only 3 he took part in) he's one of the greatest shooters in history and at almost 6'10" he could ball handle and pass as well as any point guard. Honestly show me a single person claiming Larry couldn't play today. Show me one person saying that.

What’s great about LB was that when he shot the 🏀 .. where ever he was .. His shooting was dead on! If he shot say 100 balls in a game.. I’d say 85 of them would be all net .. perfect throws.

11:13 I actually did one of those passes in a high school varsity game. It was a long offensive rebound that I got at the foul line, but facing the opposite basket. I knew our PF was alone under the hoop because his defender went after the same rebound, so I just fired it over my head behind me and it went straight to his chest. But the freaking guy was so surprised by the pass, he missed the damn wide open layup.
I was a PG that LOVED passing, so I gave him shit for a couple weeks. ALWAYS be expecting a pass.

Best all-around player ever. An amazing and willing passer (which MJ wasn't). MJ has the edge because of his athletic gifts, he was an amazing defender too, Larry lacked those athletic gifts and was still a beast. Most people with his physique end up being chumps in the NBA and he's near-GOAT with those deficiencies, it's unreal.

Never hear anyone mention this but that game-winner against Portland he hit in the corner - that game was right before the All Star break and Philly and Boston were neck and neck for best record and the coach of the team with the best record would coach the All Star game. Well it came down to that game vs Portland. If the Celtics won, KC Jones would coach the All Star game. If Boston lost, Billy Cunningham would coach. And Larry made sure he coach got the honor.
I remember that game (from the 1984-85 season) was shown on tape delay. CBS was showing another game nationally at the same time and their contract stipulated theirs would be the only NBA game on at that time. So Sports Channel had to delay showing the game for a few hours. We saw the game winning shot on the news before we got to watch the game.

Want something crazy to think about? The 3 point shot didn't exist until Bird's rookie year. The game hadn't evolved at all to know how to fully utilize it like today. Yet despite this Bird had a .427 3 point percentage in 84-85' while averaging 29 points per game despite only attempting 1.6 3 point shots per game. No that isn't a typo. He attempted LESS than two 3 points a game. Steph Curry's best season in terms of points per game? He "only" averaged 32 points per game while averaging nearly THIRTEEN 3 point attempts per game. Curry also had a lower 3 point shooting percentage that year than Bird's best year (though Curry's best shooting percentage years are better).
Now don't get me wrong Curry is amazing but it would have been extremely interesting to know what Bird could have done in a modern offense built around setting him up with the 3 ball more often.
In short one of the best 3 point shooters in the game hardly every shot 3 pointers and yet was still able to average 29 points a game lol.

Charley Jones used to tell a story when he played for the bullets, says bird was going on and on about how he couldn't cover him so charley buckled down and held bird to 17 points, the next time they played bird pulls him aside and apologized and said charley was a great defender,a great ballplayer a great this a great that and Charlie said " well thanks larry". Larry ends up with a triple double with about 40 points , Charlie taps his head and says " THAT'S larry".
