It's Christmas Eve and I couldn't put gas in my Hyundai because the fuel door wouldn't open... Thanks to this video, I was able to jimmy it open, and I'll be able to pick my parents up at the airport on time. In other words: Thanks a million!
Thanks for the video! After trying to get at the actuator/pin for 40 minutes I ended up just prying the bracket that it goes into and got it in 10 seconds with no damage done. Just a tip in case anyone else runs into the same issue
Just did the same thing. Worked so much easier than trying to push that pin that's covered. Just used old harbor freight tools that I didn't care about breaking haha
I was having this exact problem with my 2014 Santa Fe. I searched all over for videos of how to get the broken pin to move so I could open the door. I am so happy I found this video. The bungy cord is a great tip. I used the L shaped pick and had it fixed in no time. I did have to make a small slit in the rubber boot around the filler cap so I could get the two actuator bolts out. Thank you for you great video.
Great video. I have a 2013 Azera with the same problem. I booked marked your video and will need to watch it a few more times to be sure I'm moving in the right direction. Thanks again for being the groundbreaker for the rest of us. Wish me luck.
I would never think that this would never happen to a 2015 car but it did and I had no gas in it. So thanks for the video It took me a while but I got it open
Great video! I rubber-banded some composite shims together to create a wedge. Used a long skinny flat-head screwdriver to pop that little button. Took about 20 minutes of fiddling around with it, but got it done!
This is the same for 2015 Sonata Hybrid (2014 body style on the 2015 hybrid - P/N 81590-3S000). Still able to pull the release cord in trunk, but needed it fixed for my wife... Now back to good as new! Slicing open seal to get to bolts was clutch.
At the gas station today and wouldn't you know it.lol TH-cam stay winning thanks to people like you. Thanks. Also I never had a something as simple as a gas door go out on me before and I've been with Hyundai now for 10 plus years with two cars. I still love my Sonata though.
There is a flange over the spout/tank spout that can be removed. It's were the spout and rubber boot join near the spout. Once out that rubber part can be removed altogether. Undo bolts, remove unit from boot cavity and reinstall. Will likely damage that rubber boot if old and brittle.
If the cable pull in the trunk works, remove the button for the fuel door in the dash or door. Open it and check for carbon deposits in the contacts. Clean it and see if it works.
With all the complaints, seems like Hyundai should do a recall on this part? Great video! Found this video because the same damn thing just happened to my Hyundai Sonata… 😊 Thanks
Important...he knows it's not the switch at the front because his manual release isn't working. In my case, the TRUNK release isn't working either and the trunk manual fuel door cable works . That equals BAD switch in the dash. That happens too.
Just happened to my 2013 a week ago.. My impatients I just broke the damn door at the pump🤣🤷🏾♀️.. Needed gas.. But now I can fix great video.. Dumb design.
This happened to me as well it is a pain in the ass and another one of hyundai's brilliant ideas to get you to come back so they can charge you an arm and a leg....thank you for posting
When start up companies make new things, and companies change designs like women change their shoes for a fashion statement every year, it is prone to failure. Car companies now days never spend enough time refining an idea. Consumers buy things that look newer, and are different. By the time most companies realize they have a problem, they are already building a next generation vehicle. In a way, it is the consumers fault, because that is what they want. Some companies knowingly build junk, but it usually is not Asian companies.
You can unclip the flange from the body metal. Get a pick or driver under the lip and pull inward towards cap. Its not "easy", careful not to scratch your paint tho.
I just finished replacing a fuel door that was broken off for a customer. Once you pop the black plastic housing (down from the top and up from the bottom) depress the release button so it goes behind the rubber flap and the housing comes right out. Release bolts to the sheet metal. I left mine in place as it wasnt broken. Switch out the door and the housing (with the new door) goes in like grease. Just depress the button again on the way in. Yes, I was cussing it to start. Dont scratch the paint!
Has anyone figured out how to do this without cutting the rubber that covers the bolts? Thanks for the video Rust Belt Auto! Of course, I discovered mine was broken in the Winter at 11pm with almost no gas. Thanks, Hyundai Design Team!
I think i have to replace mine. Today i tried to open it using the button inside car and manual cable pull in my trunk. Doesnt want to pop open. 2015 Sonata. When i try the button i hear the mechanical sound but door wont pop open. Is there another component. I hear the actuator moving when I press the button so maybe its like your situation.
Mine quit last week. Got it popped open to be able to make a trip to the city. Bought the part on amazon for $20. Too bad I have to change it in 19 degree weather.
Wasn’t so bad. The rubber doesn’t want to go back due to the cold. Also, I accessed everything on the back side through the opening that you would remove to change a bulb. Far less to take apart. About a 20 minute job in the cold. Thanks for the video!
We have this same problem with our 2009 Sonata. I wish my husband would have listened to me and stuck with Toyota! I'll never buy another Hyundai. I hate it.
I'm having the opposite problem (gas door won't latch closed). It's a much better problem to have--at least I can put fuel in the car! But I think it's the same component that has broken. 2016 Hyndai Genesis. Looks like they have all kinds of problems with this part.
It could possibly be an electrical issue, or maybe a solenoid. Thankfully with an issue like that, you could probably still use the manual release handle in the trunk if it got really bad. If you go on ebay and look for that part for your vehicle, it will list the application of every vehicle for that particular part. It is probably not the same. If it was, I would have listed in in my description for this video to generate more views.
Rust belt auto...I'm having this issue on my 2013 Sonata...I notice that little blue piece is connected to the plunger of the manual release in my trunk, however the little piece is there but not connected to the white plunger. Would this cause the push button not to work?
Had the same problem so replaced the door switch as shown in the video. Pushed the button on the dash door opened OK. Shut the door and repeated 2-3 times. Worked good. Figured I got the problem fixed. Four time wasn't a charm. Heard noise like the solenoid might have tripped, door didn't open. Figured I had a bad new switch. Took it out and on the bench and applied 12.53V from a battery to switch. Clicked away every time, didn't miss a beat. Figured, maybe, a bad wire? Plugged the switch back in to the harness and laid it in the trunk, pushed the dash button. CLICK! CLICK! CLICK! Worked every time. Installed the switch back into its slot. Closed the lid. Pushed the dash button... NADA! ZILCH! NOT A PEEP from the switch. Manually opened the door with the release handle, pushed the dash button. NOTHING! Can anyone shed some light on this...anyone?
there is no need to buy a new one bring a small screw that should be smaller diameter than the pin and drill the screw into the pin with a driller then cut the head of the screw , the remaining part of the screw will be stuck in the remaining pin and that it is
OK first thanks for the video...BUT BRO What self respecting mechanic wears open toe sandals while working in a shop. I mean COME ON MAN!! How's the toes when you accidently kick that floor jack that is just to the right of your foot, or if you accidently drop that pick and it takes a chunk out of the top of your white ass foot. How about at the very least a pair of sneakers what the hell
I'm not in a shop. When you work for people, you get pushed. When you dont work for assholes in the industry, you realize that everything is dangerous, and everything is a hazard. This just happened to my exact car today! Wouldn't open at the gas station, so I really appreciate you taking the time to post this!
How convenient to have it happen to everyone when they need gas. You're welcome.

I used to enjoy getting out of my car and opening the fuel door manually.
Good video
I appreciate the video a lot man. You just saved me a stranded car on the side of the road
I would never think that this would never happen to a 2015 car but it did and I had no gas in it. So thanks for the video It took me a while but I got it open

The razor blade is genius. Doing it this way today. Thanks!
Thanks for this video. It showed me exactly how to remove and install the actuator mechanism.
There is a flange over the spout/tank spout that can be removed. It's were the spout and rubber boot join near the spout. Once out that rubber part can be removed altogether. Undo bolts, remove unit from boot cavity and reinstall. Will likely damage that rubber boot if old and brittle.

Happened to mine today. Im gonna try this in the morning.

Thanks Bud, this worked on my 2015 Hyundai Sonata SE. I bought the part off Amazon

Bravo man! Bravo!
I had the same problem, I just put some glue, it work just fine so far..
Brave indeed. Let me know if, and when it does not If you would. I want to know how much stronger the glue is than that Korean part.
Thank you!! Very helpful video
He's right tho, never pay a dealer.

Given the amount of views this video has, I would say it's a common problem.
A S1ACCZ same here

I need to fix mine. Thank for the video. Do you recommend I get the part from Hyundai or can I order it on Amazon? Do you have a part number
Found this one on Ebay. It was a factory part.
Ebay the way to go !

My wife’s Elantra started needing multiple button pushes to start opening the fuel door. I’m guessing they use the same part as the Sonata?

Same
Same thing just happened to our 2013 Sonata. Would you recommend using a non OEM part found on Amazon? Thanks for the video.
I think all the parts you get will be Korean.
How the heck did you get to the old actuator?
Did you watch the video?
Rust belt auto...I'm having this issue on my 2013 Sonata...I notice that little blue piece is connected to the plunger of the manual release in my trunk, however the little piece is there but not connected to the white plunger. Would this cause the push button not to work?
Sounds like it's broke.
@@RustBeltAuto ok ty...would you suggest I replace the actuator?
@@buddy7277 can you open the thing with the cable, or the button?
@@RustBeltAuto yes I can open it with the cable in the trunk, but door will not open with a push of the button.
@@buddy7277 you can induce power into it unplugged to see if it opens, and/or check for power at the unit.

This one was physically broke.
OMG!!!!! This guy is Rose's cousin from St. Olaf
Where can I buy the part?
I had the victim mail order it from Ebay.
good for you but how did you get it from inside the trunk you did talk more than work but its done
Get what it?
Where did you buy that part to fix the issue? Do you have a part number as well??
Did you watch the video? EBAY.
My grandma need help with hers
Just did this and the button still doesn’t work. Any other ideas as to why that is...?
If you can pull on the cable in the trunk, and it opens, you have an electrical issue.
@@RustBeltAuto correct. The problem is likely the microswitch in the door (which is activated when you push the button)
What about the button??

I. It happens that I press the brake pedal, the fuel gate opens, it is Sonata 2012, open the solution
@@carlosrodriguez-fz9hz that's an amazing story.

I’m a Hyundai tech. Those door inserts are a pain to get out.
Do you do it a different way?
there is no need to buy a new one
