    61 Fords were beautiful. We had a 61 Country Squire when I was a kid. The tail lights looked like rocket engines! At least they do when you're 5 years old.

      A lot of viewers loved Roger and from Wayne's demeanor toward him at times many felt he didn't get the respect he deserved. Of course that's a perception, only Wayne and Roger know the details. Wayne's a sharp car Guy and Roger's mechanical skills are top notch. Rogers wit and philosophical mannerism were always entertaining. Overall, a great show. @@artszabo1015

    Full size muscle car in 61. I rode in a 406 cubic inch 405 hp. 62 box top Galaxie 4 speed. Paid a guy at a car show in town. Bought a tank of gas and 20$. Man! Just getting on the Highway with the windows down and the cut off headers opened up. A thrill that most people will never feel! Bronze color with black interior. Steely poverty hubcaps and tall skinny tires. What a car! Shawn.

      My grandpa who was a Ford mechanic had a 1962 Galaxie 500 XL tudor hardtop Emberglow with the 390 tri power with the 4 speed I I rode on several times. I just LOVED that car. Wish I could find one of these rare super fast Ford's from back in the day. Love my old Fords.

      @@markreisen7038 No 390 tri-power option in 1962. Only tri-power option was for the 406 engine. 4 speed transmission was the B/W T-10. Ford top-loader 4 speed came out in 1963.

      @sergeantmasson3669 they had a 390 4bbl with a dealer install tri carb as an option in 61 and 62. My grand father was a Ford mechanic in the sixties and did a few of these change overs, so they were available in limited numbers.

      @@markreisen7038 No 390 tri-power option in 1962. 1961 only. FYI, I was a Ford auto/truck tech in the 60's. BTW, 390 tri-power factory option, the tri-power setup kit was boxed and in the trunk from the Ford factory.

    When I was a teenager, in the late '80s, a friend of mine had a red '61 Sunliner convertible. 390, 3 speed on the column. He was the 2nd owner. He bought it from his aunt, who had bought it new. We had a lot of fun cruising in that car. Even in the winter. The temperature could be in the 30s, and it put out enough heat to cruise with the top down.
    He picked up a mint green '61 Starliner for a parts car. It was restorable, back then. I ran into him at a store a few years ago and he told me he still had all his cars, which included a couple of '63 Impalas, and some '50s Ford and International pickups. He wasn't a rich kid. He just knew how to find bargains. Before anyone asks, he would never sell, and I won't put you in contact with him. This video just brought back some memories and I had to comment.

    There is a guy in SE Indiana/SW Ohio that has an all original 427, 4 speed one of these that I see at a car show every year. Black with red interior. Love that car. I look for it every year. I ask him every year if he's ready to sell it to me. He still has it.

    My father in law has had a 61 starliner in the garage since 75 that his dad bought new. Still has that plastic bubble wrap on the seats. Black white painted top ( 390 3x2 carbs 4 speed) 27k miles. He won’t sell it. Or get it out. I have owned a restoration shop for 23 years. 😅. My wife will inherit it , I guess. Drives me nuts that he won’t enjoy it.

    Our first new car was a 1961 Ford Galaxie 500 2 door coupe. I loved it and would love to have it back today!

    My brother owned one. Black with a white roof. 375hp, 3 speed with overdrive. He bought it brand new over 100 thousand miles , then ended it's days on the local dirt track.

    I heard about 40 years ag Fords 1961 galaxie with tri-power had an air cleaner with 3 hold down screws one for each carburetor but never saw one. Air cleaners for the 406 w/tri power came with only 2 hold down screws for front and back carbs, when I saw this vidio I finely saw one.when someone puts tri power on a 61 ford they use the 2 screw air cleaner as thats what more available. Great to see this car

    I was introduced to the Starliner watching Samspace 81. It really is a good looking car but had no idea it was a proper "hot rod " Thankyou Wayne . Always a priviledge and pleasure to see your passion and knowledge .

    My auto body teacher in H/S had a 61 Starliner, 390, 3/2s 4 speed, Black on Black in the mid 80s ! Beautiful Car, will always remember that car ! 😁✌

      @@williamgilpin3693 406 did not come out until 1962. Only available for '62, and '63. All 1961 Ford PI cars had 390 engines. I began with Ford as an intern auto/truck tech in 1961 while still in high school. I worked at the largest Ford dealer, in my state, for 40 years. 1965, I had a 1961 Ford Custom 2 doors 390 4v PI car that had a 3 speed with OD manual transmission.

    My first car was a '60 Starliner. My Ford dealer thought it was the ugliest Ford ever made but I still think they're beautiful. Later I had a '61 Galaxie 4-door.

    My Father bought the exact same car in 1961, It would have been Purchased in the Chicago or central il area. He used to drag race it at US 30 drag strip in Indiana in the early 60s.

      @@buff6637 Sorry but I do not know what ets represents, I looked it up and it referred to electronic traction control but I did not think they had that in the 60s. I do remember him talking about having lots of problems with the rear end gears on that car.

    I was on my honeymoon in Denver….1970….. and I was stopped at a light when I noticed a beautiful ‘61 Starliner in the intersection waiting to turn left….. I had a beautiful view of the drivers side profile….. I told my new bride, “Look at that beautiful ‘61 Starliner”!! And then, at that moment, the driver started to make the left turn, but straightened back up when he realized the on-coming car wasn’t stopping……. too late…. the oncoming car sideswiped that Starliner…. totally wiped off the whole left side of that beauty…….what a sad moment…….I felt bad for the guy…….😢

    My 61 Ford country sedan station, had a 390 police interceptor tri-power cast iron factory headers, West nine inch wide by 15 inch tork thrust wheels and J 60 15'' tires,, 1st year for the electric back window,, folding down the rear seat and opening the tailgate allowed you to slide a 4 x 8 sheet plywood inside and close the gate.. had three tone Lincoln root beer colors,, etched glass, Monte Carlo swivel bucket Seats...

    What a great survivor! Typically a car ordered like that would have been used and abused, engine hammered and replaced, etc. What is the mileage? Would be nice to put it on a dyno to get an understanding of its true HP. I suspect that after the HP wars took off in the mid 50’s all manufacturers often fudged their numbers upward. Until the late 60’s when insurance companies started penalizing the owners of hottest cars and the fudging went the other way.

    The 401 hp 390 was underrated and made 425-430 hp, they were built to very low friction and they had the best heads of any of the big 3. Very similar to the much later Cleveland Yates closed Chamber head. They made 425-450 depending on the exhaust. Open iron headers with the Clay Smith mufflers attached with a 24 inch pipe , 3 inch diameter and the Woodpecker chomping on a cigar. They were dynoed at 485 hp and 485 ft lbs of torque. Many Borg Warner 4 speeds were sacrificed to the 390 in those days, Sticking Slicks on a 2 lane blacktop, they were king on the street until the 396 Chevelle. Bad ass car. I wish Iacocca had been fired . The 62 Fairlane should have fit the FE. It should have been like a 68 Nova. Sub framed Fairlane s and Mustangs. all the midsize cars should have been subframed 65 Galaxie narrowed and The King the FE should have been the option. Iacocca, ruined Ford for his little 289 pieces of shit. If Ford had made the C0AE-D heads in Aluminum and the 2x4 head in Aluminum. That would’ve been the lightest bad ass car of the 60s. And the 410- 428s with the aluminum heads and a 2x4. Stainless Steel Headers. A 67-70 Mustang or Torino 428 with that solid cam the 61 390 had, aluminum 61 heads and 2x4 aluminum intake stainless steel headers and none of that bull shit front and rear suspension. Iacocca! Fucking rrrrrrr!

    I had a '62 406 ....These cars were not available with and automatic....Just a 4 speed or a Borg- Warner 3 speed w/ overdrive.....( I had the overdrive) When my 406 gave up I replaced it with a race prepped Holman Moody 427, much to the dismay of the Hemi Roadrunner crowd ....It was probably the only tri-powered 427 you'll ever see....

    1961 my birth year of course this car is cool!!! A lot of 61 cars were great looking cars!! I’m thinking how much neater this would look if it had red lines, white walls or maybe raised white letter tires!! Not many of Wayne’s cars have white walls or fancy tires!! Not my preference but not my cars!! Maybe I’m a little jealous!! 😎🤔🫡🇺🇸

    I have been wondering for decades about a buddy's old car. He loved my old Galaxie so he bought a 61 box top Galaxie/Fairlane? It had a Galaxie badge between the taillights and Fairlane on the front fenders (somebody could have done that). But on the glovebox there was a Galaxie/Fairlane one piece badge and it looked stock and the holes lined up without extras on the glove box. Anybody?

    I was 10 yrs. old when my dad bought the ' 61 Starliner. It was in a blue green color. What was the standard factory engine for that model ? No way was it anywhere near the horsepower that you mentioned in the video.

      I don't know if you could get the base 223 6 cylinder engine in the Starliner but the base V8 for the Galaxie was the 292 Y-block V8 which would be discontinued after 1962 for the 289 Windsor. You could also get the 352 FE which was a smaller displacement alternative to the big 390 FE.

    In 1961, I had a 1961 Chevy Biscayne with a 350hp 348ci engine. At the two Long Island drag strips, we beat the Ford 401 all the time. Then came my 409hp 409ci impala. Next some ugly cars from Plymouth and Dodge and they smeared us all. Great years that evaporated when the US Army drafted a lot of us.

    Not much of a test drive editor! Ol Wayne Carini had most of the details right but I can tell you that the 4 barrel Holley carb version of the new for 1961 390 engine was rated at 375 horse. The tri power version shown here was indeed rated at 401 horse but I can state with confidence it didn’t make 401 let alone 425 like Ol Wayne says. The ‘62 Ford with the new for ‘62 406 rated at 405 horses didn’t make 405 either. I will say the ‘61 Ford Starliner as shown was the best looking of the full size Fords from 1960 thru 1964. The 1965’s had a whole new look.

    Judging by that property, I think Wayne’s doing ok for himself. Back in that era, there were lots of options that weren’t advertised too much. You had to probe and ask to see engine options etc. Most sales staff wouldn’t have a clue unless they were into performance. The Big 3 all seemed to have hidden treasures.

    MY UNCLE OWNED THIS VERY CAR WITH THE SPECIAL ORDER 3-2 BARRELS, ONLY HIS WAS WHITE.
    AT THE TIME, HE WAS A MACHINEST AT NORTH AMERICAN AVIATION IN EL SEGUNDO, CALIFORNIA BUILDING THE MOCK-UPS OF THE XB-70 VALKYRIE BOMBER, THEN THE ACTUAL XB-70 ITSELF.
    (HE WAS "ELECTED" TO MACHINE THE ESCAPE HATCHES FOR THE COCKPIT WITH THE EXPLOSIVE BOLTS, BECAUSE NOBODY ELSE WOULD DO IT !).
    BACK TO HIS '61.
    WHEN I WAS OLD ENOUGH TO REMEMBER ANYTHING, HE TAUGHT ME TO "POLISH & WAX" ON THAT STARLINER, "WEEKEND BY WEEKEND" IN HERMOSA BEACH WHERE HE LIVED LITERALLY ONE BLOCK FROM THE SAND.
    IT WAS "ONE WEEKEND, YOU POLISH & WAX THE FRONT FENDER, THE NEXT WEEKEND, THE OTHER, THE NEXT WEEKEND, THE HOOD, THE NEXT, THE TRUNK LID", ECT. ECT.
    UNTIL THE ENTIRE CAR WAS POLISHED & WAXED, THEN START THE CIRCLE AGAIN.
    THAT HAS STUCK WITH ME MY ENTIRE LIFE.
    I DO THIS WITH ALL MY VEHICLES.
    BUT I REMEMBER TAKING DRIVES IN THIS CAR WITH MY UNCLE ON THE CURVES OF PERSHING DRIVE BY LAX, & ALL OF US SAYING "KICK 'ER", & HE'D DROP THAT PEDAL TO THE FLOOR & "LIGHT 'EM UP" THROUGH THE CURVES.
    THEY DON'T MAKE CARS LIKE THESE ANYMORE, UNLESS YOU SPEND ELEVENTY MILLION, TRILLION, ZILLION, GIG-GILLION FRICKEN DOLLARS.

    Never came with a 4 speed, was a 3 speed t85 overdrive.

    Thanks, I had to settle ( kind if Budget) for the 61 GALAXIE Red CONV(Auto, 352 / 4 BBL ( boo)), for couple years until , finally, getting MY , Four Speed”” in a 1966 GALaxie 500 XL,(** 352/4 Bbl again)… INTERESTINGLY, the 61 Convertible was junk/ wore out quickly…. The 66 GALAXIE XL was much nicer, easy to upgrade(* e.g METALLIC BRAKES, SHOCKS ETC.), * …… ANYWAYS , this 390/ 3Dueces was the Hottest/ best in 61-62, etc., We All Heard ……

    Very nice, but I think the 1960 Starliner was better, with the lower hood and simpler grill.

    Never owned the '61 but had the '60 and also a '62 with the 406 tri-power I bought from a bank owners wife. She'd checked most of the boxes, ordered the tri-power separate, had the dealer install it and the under dash air. '60 wasn't a Starliner but the next-door farmers wife had ordered the 352/360hp, 3 on the tree. I finally got it in '72 right before my 16th b'day, 2nd tagged vehicle but the first I actually drove. They retired, were moving to town, had their farm auction, no one wanted a 12 year old, dead brown paint farm car. I did, knew what it was, a 18K mile sweet ride I'd heard chirp the tires every so often as she headed to town and knew I was out front to hear it.

    Wayne, the 427 didnt come in '62. The 406 was still the top engine in the Galaxie at 63 introduction, in Fall, 1962, along with the formal roofline hardtop, The 427, and Fastback roof, came out early 63, in time to use both at the Daytona 500, where the 427 took the first 5 places. I'm the same age as you, and lived across the street from a 62 Galaxie 500XL, 406/405hp, 4 speed, black/black.

    There's no way that engine makes 400 horsepower!
    American car companies were notorious for running blueprinted engines with no accessories open headers no air filter and even some were ported when they ran them on the dyno.
    So subtract at least 100 horsepower from that number.
    If you ran that engine as it is with full exhaust and accessories on a dyno right now it probably puts out about 290 horsepower......

      They really did, some of the Mercurys and Lincolns had that much power too. The Ford 390s were some very powerful engines for the time, my Uncle had a Thunderbird with a 390, that was one fast car. There's a reason T Birds outsold Corvettes the way they did for so long back then.

      The engine makes over 400 gross horsepower. Gross horsepower was used in the US until 1972 when they began measuring in net horsepower. Before 1972 all US car engines were measured as gross horsepower, and there was nothing "notorious" about it.

    Collecting cars isnt wven cool anymore. It just for old white hair men to buy. As kids we all wanted a muscle car. Not ine person i know right now in my generation has a classic car ir even wants to get one. People cant even afford daily drivers.
