Bro, you skipped over the first guitarist, Jimmy Battle, and bassist Dianne DiPiazza who was replaced by Jerry Caiafa. On their first self published single, Cough-Cool (with Manny, Glenn and Jerry), Glenn misspelled Caiafa as Cafia. Jerry wanted Glenn to use his first name only, so Glenn put Jerry Only on the next pressing.
Jimmy Battle and Diane Dipiazza i believe left Before Manny Joined MR.Jim was Drumming first month Manny just remembers jerry jim rememebers both bassist manny says so in this interview from what he remember jerry was always the bassist th-cam.com/video/QvuyvTOGIwU/w-d-xo.html and in this one mr jim says he remembers Diane and Jimi played with him and glenn the month before jerry and manny joined th-cam.com/video/IXsAoXFJhw4/w-d-xo.html im shore diane considers jerry the original bassist im shore jimi considers franche the original guitairst and im shore mr jim considers manny the original drummer
Damn decent vid, man. I'd been a little metalhead since I was 6 and had always seen the logo on Metallica's shirts and wotnot. I didn't start listening to them until I was 14 and that pretty much opened my love for punk. Not only that, at a time when kids were "growing out" of the Halloween spirit in the mid 90s, the Misfits gave me back my Halloween! It was like they gave me back my childhood and made the holiday special and important again, even though it was kinda seeing it in a new light. Maybe a darker light lol. It really helped me to stay young at heart and always has.
Love your channel and all the work you put into these videos. The Misfits are by far my favorite band and I half to second the comments about the reunion tours of late being absolutely incredible. One genre I don’t think they get credit for influencing (among others) is Black Metal, particularly Earth AD. Many black metal bands have covered the Misfits and you can hear a lot of that raw aggression from Earth AD on those early black metal staples.
Great video of the history of such a great band. The one thing that would really help to enjoy it greatly is better editing to have some gaps in the dialogue as it's relentless, so it sounds unnatural. Very few You tubers use this style any longer. All the same thank you as I've always loved the Misfits and I appreciate what you have put out regarding them as I learnt a bit more of their really, very early days.
I've been into punk rock since the early 80s but never got into Misfits. Their songs are good, but the horror/sci-fi thing seemed silly. A few weeks ago I hear "The Original" Misfits are together & playing. So I decided to go & was shocked by TWO things...1.) FEAR opened (I didn't know till I got there). 2.) Misfits are headlining over Alice Cooper & FILLED a 20,000-seat amphitheater! I had NO IDEA Misfits were so popular! Loved seeing FEAR for the second time in 2 months, enjoyed Alice Cooper's stage show, and I was BLOWN AWAY by Misfits! Glenn is a 67 year old teenager! Same for Lee Ving at 72, Alice Cooper at 74. They're all aging well & seem healthy. I've never seen a punk show this huge, Misfits were incredible & played all their old classics. Humongous, non-stop pit of happy punk rockers, too. History-making night!
The horror aspect kept the music free of political rhetoric, since most people dont have a right to preach out of sheer stupidity ignorance. More then half the punk bands are ignorant to where anarchy stems from and the other half, only wants to get fucked up. The punk rock ideology needs an update.
Also the horror aspect set them apart from other bands in the scene who all copied each other. Let's be honest about punk. IT has become another form of conformity, an ideology that shames anyone who might think differently. Even having a uniform that is a telling characteristic of conformist movements. From my POV, a true punk, is a individual unto themselves. and they rebel even from the rebellious. For rebellion can become the neo norm and represent the same force and power that it was created to oppose. True punk, stands against conformity, no matter what form it takes. BE it punk, white bred americanism, or communism. Punk was created to oppose all forms of group think. YEt when left unchecked, and led by the blind deaf and dumb becomes the very tenant of group think and its collectivism. Most punk bands, are all trying to sound like each other. Misfits was one of the few who stand alone. and thats what makes their music and symbol more punk then the likes of any crust punk band. Since most crust is nothing if not the same 5 bands in sound producing the same shit over and over. Which got so old, sludge and doom metal over shadowed crust as soon as it became clear it was something differnt. Not based in polticial ideology. But mythology and lore. MArrying horror punk elements with metal tones. So you see, misifits were always superior to the other bands, because everyone has always tried to be a copy of the bands they like the most. and its only the flagship bands who stand apart. and the ones who pioneer the sounds that are only worth listening to. How many grind bands sound exactly like assuck or napalm death? How many wanted to sound exact like destroy! and disrupt? HAd punk continued to innovate, it could of continued to be just as relevant as its offshoots which have pretty much over shadowed new forms of punk, that stopped growing, stopped changing, and didnt wantr to be differnt in any way. Theres a reason bands like catharsis and abc diablo are superior to the likes of thulsa doom or contravene. BEcause they are simply, smarter, better bands willing to stand on their own terms and do their own thing.
I saw them play with Type O Negative in NYC. It was before Michael Graves, I guess after the settled court case. Great show and great synopsis of the Misfits, The Punk Historian.
who was singing for them before graves, after Danzig? it was actually Peter Steele, who Jerry had lined up as Glenn's replacement, who was being taught the songs by Graves (who jerry liked, but wanted a more mature guy with a name in the industry) who told the Caifia bros to use Graves. "he's your guy", Steele told jerry. "He knows all the songs, and sings them great". With Peter Steele's endorsement, Michale got the gig. I never liked Graves ( that lineup of the band was fine, but should've just called themselves by a different name) and then all that right wing political shit came out about Graves and made the whole situation way less tolerable
@@AKR-lq1if I didn't know they were lining up Peter Steele! At the show I referenced above I'm 90% sure it wasn't Graves singing. I'll root around and see if any of my friends remember the show well enough to give me a clue about who was singing. I have to admit that I haven't been keeping track of Misfits news for many years (probably just after Graves left the band and tried to join the Marines IIRC) and after watching this video I looked up Graves and saw his Newsmax interviews where he complained about being cancelled or whatever. It was gross.
I saw Glenn open for Sabbath on Lauderdale at a small theater. It wasn’t the Misfits but he played a few of the classics and between his and Ronnie’s voice I was touched forever.
"The misfits are the punk band all the metalheads love" they're also the punk band country fans love, hence my profile picture. One of the greatest vibes you can possibly achieve is bombing through the woods in a shitty old truck with a misfits album blasting at full volume
Thanks for putting this together dude!!! It's seriously appreciated. I can never find history on the Misfits. But I'm kinda confused about this internet thing! You are definitely qualified.
I saw the misfits and gwar (I think Danzig played as well but I don't remember exactly) sometime in the mid 90s. It was amazing. Gwar had this insane stage show.
Saw *the* Misfits live, think it was 2012/13? what I remember most was how fucking loud it was, my ears were ringing for a few days after but the show was great
Legacy Of Brutality is masterpiece. It's not a punk rock masterpiece, it's a musical masterpiece on the same plane as Beethoven's 5th symphony and Beach Boys Pet Sounds. Many to this day associate the Misfits with t-shirts and tattoos but it is Legacy that continues to draw me in from beginning to end of that LP.
Wow, of all the albums but is also my first one I bought in 85 I always thought it sounded hollow, later to find Glenn fuckin with it out of spite, but I was hooked when I heard live hate breeders, maybe evilive, great video
I have 2 Danzig tattoos and 2 misfits tattoos, I love everything Danzig, he’s one of the best singer songwriters in rock history, you can’t deny his immense talent, I’m a Christian man and my favorite band is Danzig, I would love to meet glen and talk with him,
Most righteous video. Your enthusiasm for all your subjects is infectious and has made me want to definitely pull out my old Misfits lps. Your videos really could be used as a teaching outlet as your informative but upbeat and flowing style is perfect for new fans and old diehards alike. Cheers brother, keep up the good work.
Sometimes it's TOOL, sometimes it's Hendrix, other times it's Killing Joke. But no matter what, at all times, The Misfits are number 1 in my top 3 favorite bands of ALL time. Honorable mention to Pink Floyd, but we know what the best is here, don't we?
Oooph...I wasn't expecting THIS here. Looking forward to this.. straight outta HubCity,NJ.. I ain't no god-damned sunuvabitch! Oh yeah...Happy Hallowee-ee-ee-een-Halloween!
I discovered the Misfits when I was 13 and just starting to play guitar and bass. They were my biggest influence for years. Eventually I moved to the NYC area from California to get deeper into the music industry. Through effort and good fortune I was able to meet, then work with, these guys for about 3 years. Jerry, Robo and Frank Licata are some of the coolest guys I've ever known. What an awesome stroke of luck it was to get to know these guys.
Back in ‘93/‘94 myself and a couple neighborhood friends started a punk/hardcore band called The Clap. I was like 14 or 15. I played guitar (I didn’t know shit about playing guitar). After a bunch of practice sessions I’d start getting the hang of it. Our first show was a small benefit show for “Food not Bombs”. I was nervous af! We did a Misfits cover of “I turned into a Martian”, once those first three chords rang out and people started stage diving and moshing - it was like magic. We’d go on to play many shows with iconic bands like Hatebreed (back in their beginning days), Bouncing Souls, Weston, Snapcase, our sister band - Bladecrasher (VBHC), Endeavor, Floorpunch, PeeTanks, 25 Ta Life, Lifetime, Lost Tribe (VA skate legends), The Unabombers (RIP Tre), Inquisition, Shutdown and more. Man, It was such a great experience especially at such a young age. We played our last show in ‘96 I believe and ending the set with a cover of JUDGE’s “New York Crew”. I was playing drums by this point. People were going nuts, stage diving off my drum set and half stacks. The only thing left standing was the bass drum and Tom rack ahaha. By 1999 I would have my first son, marking the end of a chapter and start of another. At 44 and with both of my sons in their 20’s…..I may have to get me a crimson skull tattoo. I don’t know, maybe. I have an urge to listen to Earth Crisis’ cover of “Earth A.D.” all of a sudden 🤷🏻♂️🍿
Man…I remember the Misfits in the 80’s…kids were crazy for them. I like the early stuff ok. Those early records would sell for big money in the MRR personals section. I remember me and my buddy found a copy of Beware in a used record store for $8 I think. We found it at the same time and kinda fought over it but I let him take it as I didn’t even have a record player lol. Thanks for the video bud! I like watching your stuff as I grew up in those years.
Thanks, that was interesting and well researched. I really knew nothing about the Misfits and missed them completely at the time. I have worked for Danzig in Australia and gotta say he's a pretty unpleasant little bloke. Jerry Only was on the tour and the complete flipside of Danzig. Lovely bloke. Thanks again. Enjoyed watching this.
A little hidden fact is they like to get super small local punk bands to be their opener bands. My buddies band got to open for them on one of their tours in 2014(?) and the actually had decent turn out for their set too.
i saw them in 04 maybe. jerry only singing and the drummer from the ramones sat in. did a cpl of their songs. i was singing with jerry, his giant arm around me n stage diving. awesome show.🤘🏻🍻
Great video! Last show my band played like a week ago, we covered Halloween. So did the final band, Droidian Slip lol. A lot of the bands covered The Misfits that night. Also, I think another Michigan hardcore band was on The Misfits final show too. A band called State. At least I think they were? I totally remember seeing a flier in State's compilation album, and both Necros and Misfits were on it.
I remember the misfits getting arrested in my hometown of New Orleans for being in St Roch cemetery at like 4 in the morning. It was all over the news the next day
I was a late bloomer, first lime i heard the misfits was on garage days, and garage days was the first time i heard Metallica, and then i went right out an picked up earth AD and it blew my young mind, it was so heavy and fast i really couldn't wrap my head around it, but walk among us and legacy was my jam, more rock influence to groove to. On a side note, Hetfield is wearing an S.N.F.U. shirt on the Garage Days album cover, S.N.F.U. is one of my favorite bands, and maybe a video on them would be cool?
I saw the 2nd Misfits at Maritime Hall, SF. It wasn’t long after they’d parted ways with Graves and Dr. Chud mid tour. Hetfield sang his staples, the guy from one of the supporting bands(started with Z), and Jerry sang the rest. I give them props for pulling it off, and not canceling.
As a kid the misfits inspired me to excel in mathematics and science as my whole goal in life was to build a time machine to see the original misfits didn't need to though cause I finally had my dreams come true at riot fest as well as seeing the up in jersey after that
Let’s not forget about the other elements of their look and aesthetic which was these guys had massive muscle mass like body builders that made them look even more monstrous. There were other folks in punk/rock who were big lifters as well, but it wasn’t as common back in the day. It became a big part of their brand and legacy in my opinion. 💪🏼 Great video! Keep up the good work!
Been looking for a video detailing the history of the misfits, and was not disappointed. Videos pretty awesome. Was gonna say I hope you do a graves era video but then I remembered “oh yea, he’s a Nazi.”
☆Guac -a- mongous has been, and always will be one of the best, end of story! A close second the o.g. Collections I (aka 13 Hits from Hell?) and II, and Bobbys role makes, and left a big divot to fill! I don't care about the politics, like most fans, luv all we can get of the Misfits♡♡♡ Thanx for this cool rundown!☆
All these years I had thought Samhain came before the Misfits…. Mostly because of the sound quality I guess, when you hear songs like moribundi, archangel , and To walk the night…. You can see where one might assume they were done before misfits tracks like die die,, London dungeon,, etc
My first Misfits album was Walk Among Us, which I bought in the early 90's. Within about a week, I went and bought everything of theirs that I could find.
Thank you for a tasteful documentary. You don't have to like Glenn Danzig but should respect him for what he did for rock & his honesty on his influences from Elvis to Morrison. You don't follow a guy like Danzig to pattern your life, but appreciate him for making it enjoyable. Enjoy the music and vocals.
The release of Static Age came out just in time for my freshman year in the 90s. Needless to say it took my punk friend group by storm and we were all fanatics. There was even a cover band that one group of friends started just so that they could play all the Misfits greatest hits for all the high school parties we threw. There was several bands like this, one did all NOFX covers, and another was doing old No Doubt covers, and another was doing Black Flag covers, and loads of bands performing original stuff in the thrash metal and punk genre. Damn I miss the 90s but I'd kill to be an older GenX to experience the real McCoy.
You did a great job with this. Thank you for the show outs. Also: T.S.O.L is one of my favorite bands. The are absolutely quinessentially a "secret" Death Rock band, but they seem to hate that label. Additionally, because their first EP was full of political songs, so they get thrown in with all the other west coast hardcore bands. But the truth is when you look at Dance with Me and Beneath The Shadows, they are Death Rock without indentifying. I'd also say that "Horror Punk" is an mostly different thing that is very derivative of the Misfits apart from a few specific standouts. But that is a long winded conversation, bwahaha.
I think what hurts TSOL in the grand scheme, is they just kept changing sounds, and never quite mastered any sound on a particular record. By the end, they were straight up cock rock. I do love TSOL though, this isn't me shitting on them
@@soysaucefool Gotta agree with you there. Now a days I think most people generally identify them as a hardcore punk band and attribute that to Dance With Me and the Abolish Government EP, but that only makes up such a small part of their career. They kind of have a weird legacy, having two different vocalists and never being able to stick to one genre in the prime of their career. However, for Dance With Me alone, they’re one of my favorite bands.
The Misfits are super melodic for a first generation Hardcore band. Glenn might be Hessian now but once upon a time he was a hell of a punk rock songwriter.

I went to a bunch of screeching Weasel shows in Chicago while in high school 1990. Boogadaboogadaboogada 🤘
Your videos and playlists rule dude. Great work.
And you got a bouncing souls Hoodie on. Brings me back to my teen years.
IM A HOPELESS ROMANTIC!!!!!
Youurrre juuuussst hopeless!
Just saw the Souls play that two nights in a row!!
One of the misfits is in the proud boys? Man, based.😂
and here I am at 52 yrs old still looking for Misfits stuff on TH-cam....
RIP ENJOI SKATEBOARDS. My roommates worked for Enjoi, one was the team manager and the other the filmer...bummer to see the company go :(
I've been into punk rock since the early 80s but never got into Misfits.
Dude love your artist bio channel. Will spread the channel to our swedish artists. Keep it up. Very influencing 🤘🏽🎶
"The misfits are the punk band all the metalheads love" they're also the punk band country fans love, hence my profile picture. One of the greatest vibes you can possibly achieve is bombing through the woods in a shitty old truck with a misfits album blasting at full volume
that sounds like a blast ngl
Thanks for putting this together dude!!! It's seriously appreciated.
I can never find history on the Misfits.
But I'm kinda confused about this internet thing!
You are definitely qualified.
I saw the misfits and gwar (I think Danzig played as well but I don't remember exactly) sometime in the mid 90s. It was amazing. Gwar had this insane stage show.
Still one of the greatest ever! Nobody mentions the awesome art and products they have! The coffin box set is iconic as well as the logos!
Totally different genre but would love to see a bio on Florida metal band, Deicide or Death.
Jeff Frumess saved my life.
❤ Someday, you will have to tell me why.
Saw *the* Misfits live, think it was 2012/13? what I remember most was how fucking loud it was, my ears were ringing for a few days after but the show was great
Great video.and cool you brought up Frumess
The original run of The Misfits, Samhain and Danzig are part of the same continuum.
Misfits are infused in my DNA. I have been waiting for this video. Thank you!
Punks of 2022 salute you.
Hank Williams III wore a Misfits shirt when we played the Grand Ole Opry, & regularly plays a guitar with the Crimson Skull in it 🤠🍻
Solid video, thank you so much.
Good call on the TSOL mention.
Really nice work putting this together. Kudos!
My favorite Misfits song is London Dungeon. It was one of my intros to punk and holds a special place in my heart
I'll always love and appreciate the misfits
This was a great watch! Bullet is my favorite song.🤠
My buddies band got to open for them on one of their tours in 2014(?) and the actually had decent turn out for their set too.
i saw them in 04 maybe. jerry only singing and the drummer from the ramones sat in. did a cpl of their songs. i was singing with jerry, his giant arm around me n stage diving. awesome show.🤘🏻🍻
I love punk and history. Subscribed.
You finally covered my favorite band!
The Rosedales also deserve a shout out imho
A great band to check out is Ghoultown. They're a mix of southern rock, misfits, and weird west. They covered London Dungeon too.
Thanks for doing this one. I enjoyed it. 🎃
Yes! Been waiting for a misfits video from you. This band got me into cheesy horror and into punk back in my late teens.
My band played last night... we covered Vampira 🤘🏻😈
Great video man!
I remember the misfits getting arrested in my hometown of New Orleans for being in St Roch cemetery at like 4 in the morning. It was all over the news the next day
I saw the Misfits Saturday at the Dos Equis in Dallas with Fear and Alice Cooper! They all still got it!
Awesome stuff. Where do you get your material for this? I mean doing research on the Misfits. I'd love to know some of your sources.
Oh I cannot wait for the original misfits show in Vegas on new years eve coming up
Listened to them since about 86 or 87. Best punk band ever and my most favorite.
Calabrese is a must for anyone wanting some solid mifits/danzig worshiping horror punk.
Same here. Garage days made me a fan of Motörhead and misfits too. People hate on that album but its a pretty important part in my musical upbringing
Who the fuck hates on Garage days?
Die die my darling yup I remember that
I saw the 2nd Misfits at Maritime Hall, SF. It wasn’t long after they’d parted ways with Graves and Dr. Chud mid tour. Hetfield sang his staples, the guy from one of the supporting bands(started with Z), and Jerry sang the rest. I give them props for pulling it off, and not canceling.
As a kid the misfits inspired me to excel in mathematics and science as my whole goal in life was to build a time machine to see the original misfits didn't need to though cause I finally had my dreams come true at riot fest as well as seeing the up in jersey after that
I play in an 80's style hardcore horror punk band called Cemetery Static and we were actually more influenced by Mourning Noise and D.I.
rilly proww-duh-ya!
One of my all time favorite bands
I would love to see a video on Septic Death. Keep up the great work!
Broheim! That enjoi pillow alone has me subscribed!
Great video! Keep up the good work!
I'm from new Jersey they are guidos
Great stuff, loving your work sir.
The misfits mean a lot to me, I never got to see them, but I saw Doyle a couple months ago, and he’s not slowing down anytime soon!
Been looking for a video detailing the history of the misfits, and was not disappointed. Videos pretty awesome. Was gonna say I hope you do a graves era video but then I remembered “oh yea, he’s a Nazi.”
I have one word that describes their influence on today's music that they share with KISS from the same time period: Branding.
Yeah cuz talent was NOT their niche lol.
Glen was the Misfits tho.
Period.
You can see where one might assume they were done before misfits tracks like die die,, London dungeon,, etc
wow really impressive video dude great work!
Blitzkid and Mister Monster were great unexpected references!
My first Misfits album was Walk Among Us, which I bought in the early 90's. Within about a week, I went and bought everything of theirs that I could find.
Feel ya. Mine was earth ad on cassette in maybe 89-90. Sadly I had no idea what an ep was, was like "the hell? That's all?" lol
Obviously my all time favorite band. This is great overview. I personally prefer everything up to the Halloween single but WAU is untouchable.
Gotta go with Evillive. Just captures a vibe and sound that feels totally Misfits. Thanks for this upload, really enjoyed it.
Informative!
Misfits, Propagandhi and NOFX are my top three! Refused and Rancid following closely behind. They all were my childhood growing up.
Propagandhi is so good !(how to clean everything) album is suck from the beginning to the end ! And it has great album art lol
Sorry not suck but sick
Misfits at Riot Fest ‘22 was badass.
