Thank you Lucie for answering my question. I feel the same way and I love Sri Lanka so much, with all its good and bad sides. We'll always be foreigners to them, but in the village where I live, I'm surrounded by so much love that it doesn't matter. Foreigners are treated much worse in France.

Hi Lucie. Loved this video. You are an amazing lady and very brave to go touring other countries by yourself. You have met a very handsome man in Lahiru, who is so hard working and supportive in everything you do. You started off with the language barrier but are mastering that both of you. Bought a home, got married, a job helping animals, learnt to drive the tuktuk and venture off on your own driving down those roads. The restoration on your home hasn't been easy, even seeing the tools you manage with. Your a wonderful couple, and Thank you for sharing with us.🙋🙋❤️❤️🎉🏡🙏🐕🐕

Thanks for sharing so much of your personal life with us all. I guess I'll be meeting you guys when we make it to Animal SOS in July sometime. :) How you inspire me? Your dedication and devotion to animals really connects with me on a personal level. Animal welfare is a super super super big passion of mine. Seeing you so 'hands on' at the shelter burns a desire in me to do more. So I'm coming to SL to get to work!!! : ) Thank you for keeping the 'candle burning' for all those fur babies. Your stamina and commitment to a cause that really resonates with me is something special. So to sum it up its your beautiful 'animal loving' soul that inspires me. xxx

I’ve been living in South India, Kerala, now for 10 years (I’m originally from Finland) and since it’s been so long, I feel equally as a foreigner when I do visit Finland 😄 it’s odd, like a feeling of slightly being misplaced even if I grew up there.
It’s been very interesting to see and feel a sense of home grow so strong here in India, this is where my daughter was born and where we have evolved as a family, grown roots and build a life. Kerala for me is my souls home now :)
its wonderful to see your journey here on YT, lots of love from India!

The answer for your last question:
🔴Most of the time we use red color as our floor color because in the past we did not have any other floor colors but black and red. so people used to use red as their floor color.. along with so many years now it has become a tradition to apply red color as the floor color. even though now we have few other colors to choose like gray and green, people still stucked with red color. that's the reason why we all have red floors in our homes.

    • @shanisilva6389

Neat answers to so many questions! Your patience is inspiring. To me, what inspires me the most is the simplicity in your lives. I relate to it in many ways, but up cycling as a project based thing, is yet to come.
Long years ago, I too had red floors at home, and we polished the floors to a shiny brilliance.
I think red flooring is either an Asian or European concept that SriLankans inherited from colonialism.
I remember some plantation bungalows and British built club houses upcountry, also have red floors.
Most of the Tuk Tuk drivers go downhill on neutral gear even in my area, and they say it’s easier on petrol. How safe it is, I have no idea.
We are so sorry you continue to receive stares from locals. It’s a typical, inquisitive characteristic in a majority of Sri Lankans. It’s even more popular in remote areas, and you get to face it more because you don’t live in the city, where a foreigner is a common sight. It’s lovely that you live in the peaceful countryside. Some of our norms are so gross, it’s not worth mentioning. Hopefully, you will become very accustomed to weird behaviour patterns of our people.
Good luck with your renovations Lucie and Lahiru!

Red floors in Sri Lanka is due to colonial era. Most of the bungalow houses built during British used red flooring. Just like the red carpets they use it in England for grandness. It’s never been changed since..
Example: red carpets for VIPs in Oscar, and other award ceremonies resembles this tradition.

You have better control over the vehicle when it is in a lower gear going downhill with the clutch out. Gears help slow down along with brakes so squeeze clutch just before you stall engine. Hope this helps.

30:45 😂😅 This question had me.
Literally I asked my husband the same thing too… and the blue walls! Red floors and blue walls are the in thing in our city anyway! 😅 Thanks so much for featuring and answering our questions again Lucie ❤. Was interesting to listen about your Vegan journeys. Our home is in the west of Sri Lanka in Negombo, and one time as we were going into town we were riding on the Tuk-Tuk and all I could here from behind was a street dog 🐕 let out a massive screech because it had been hit by another Tuk-Tuk it really upset me that no one bothered to stop and just continued driving as if nothing happened… 💔 as I absolutely love Dogs 🩷😢…. Would love to come a visit the sanctuary some time when we are over in Sri Lanka again, do you have the address details at all anywhere? Honestly I totally I agree with you about feeling unhappy in the UK 🇬🇧 Lucie… I would move to Sri Lanka 🇱🇰 permanently in a heart beat, but hubby wants to stay in the UK 🥺😅…. I hope maybe later on our lives when our children are older maybe we will make the move, it is something we’ve talked about, let’s see! Sri Lanka is my second home, truly my happy place too, I never want to leave… ❤🇱🇰

    • @whereslucie
      @whereslucie  ปีที่แล้ว +2

Oh no, that's so sad to hear about the dog! Unfortunately it happens so frequent, we see it all the time, and theres over 500 disabled dogs at the sanctuary, who the majority have become disabled because of being hit on the road by a careless driver!

Thank you so much, Luicy and Lahiru, for the content. Honestly, you guys inspire me as well. My words may not be enough to express how it happens, but I believe it's your attitudes and perspectives on the world. It's different in a positive way. For example, you are very honest in your explanations. Another thing is your kindness towards animals. This kind-heartedness is so beautiful and it inspires me. It can be stressful to see all those poor dogs in need, but you guys manage to keep your energy high. That's another thing that inspires me.
Regarding the question you asked about the types of flooring in Sri Lankan houses, most houses now use ceramic tiles. However, there are still some houses that have cement floors. These cement floors are mixed with red pigments to give them color. In the Sri Lankan market, you can find floor polish in various colors, but the most popular one is red. Additionally, wax is applied on top of the floor to give it shine. Cement flooring is one of the more affordable options you can find in Sri Lanka.
As for driving a tuk-tuk on a slope, it's always good to use the first gear. If you constantly apply the brake pedal while going downhill, the brakes will bind and heat up. I believe you have already experienced this, as I saw a previous video where the brakes bound and heated up. This happens because if you push the brake pedal while the tuk-tuk is in motion. It's always better to go downhill in a low gear and apply the brake when necessary.
Apart from bus drivers, tuk-tuk drivers can sometimes be scary on the road. Please be careful when you're driving. I hope this information helps. Keep up your energy! Cheers!

    Answering your questions
    Answer No - 1
It's generally not recommended to stay on gear and hold the clutch down while going downhill in a tuk tuk or any other vehicle. This can cause excessive wear and tear on the clutch, and can also be unsafe.
When going downhill, it's usually best to downshift to a lower gear and use engine braking to slow down the vehicle. This helps to avoid overheating the brakes, which can become less effective over time if they are used excessively.
If you do need to use the brakes while going downhill, it's best to apply them intermittently rather than constantly, to avoid overheating and reduce the risk of brake fade.
    Answer Number - 2
The reason why many Sri Lankans choose to have red floors in their homes is rooted in cultural and religious traditions. In Sri Lankan culture, the color red is considered auspicious and is associated with good fortune, prosperity, and happiness. Additionally, in Buddhist and Hindu traditions, red is considered a symbol of purity and is often used in religious ceremonies.
In the past, red floors were made using a mixture of terracotta clay and oil, which was a cost-effective and durable flooring option. This traditional flooring method has been passed down through generations and continues to be popular in Sri Lanka, especially in rural areas.
Today, Sri Lankans often choose to use red oxide powder, which is a synthetic pigment that gives a similar red color to the floors. Besides the traditional cultural and religious significance, red floors are also popular because they are easy to clean and maintain, and they add warmth and character to the living space.

why does a Sri Lankan house have a red floor?
It is because red cement is an affordable price. If you go for the green or blue color it is costly. There are more suggestions for red cement here. They are titanium floor, tile, and terra cotta, which come to my mind.

In your videos you project loving kindness to the land and it’s beings. It’s also inspirational to see a woman breaking social norms, driving a Tuk or getting involved in house renovations ie breaking walls, carting bricks, mixing cement and the list goes on. You have brought purpose into Lahiru’s life and like versa. You have a ‘can-do’, attitude. Great ambassador for females with all what you do.

Do you get paid working at the animal sanctuary. I have a mundane corporate job which is where my sole income is from but I also want to travel so much but I can't quit my job. I also love being close to nature and animals. How do you sustain financially? Please share with us some tips. Nevertheless, I love watching your videos. You are doing such wonderful work ❤ Love you both!

Always love your videos and its great inspiration to follow both of you and your projects. Remember to have fun and to relax - dont turn life into a rat race, like life is in Europe. I see a slight tendency in your late videos being busy and almost out of breath. I say it from a good heart - just remember to enjoy and rest too. Contents creators can be in a rush aswell and there is only 24 hours: sleep - work - rest = find balance. I will be in Sri Lanka in august for a year, so I will definitely visit your SOS and help out if I can. All the best. :)

but far away from your fence plant some thing for them so they will divert their attention to that
old age ( im not sure ppl do now ) Our famers leave some crops for wild animals
we had kind ppl lived here before other cultures mixed in
Buddhism widely practiced ( from the time Buddhism was introduced to Sri lanka by " Mihidu Thero " son of king Ashoka in India and the king who ruled here ,
was Dewanam piya tissa ) who converted to Buddhism and the ppl here ate food based on vegetation
    animals were treated nice
no cruelty then but sadly its a different world now here
so much exploitation since Portuguese invasion and others 😞

Dear Lucie, Don't worry about staring much.[I agree that it is not a good behavior] It runs through Asian genes. Not just at humans, even if a JCB is digging a hole people will gather and stare without any reason. Also 'Suddi' is not an insulting word like ' Ni**a'. Often people use this word to describe a white person.

So I’m here to comment how you inspired me 😅 I kind of seen your videos here and there before but what got me hooked is the video you did of the animals. Then I watched your video on the chicken rescue which actually inspired me to stop eating meat, that video really open my eyes cause I’m a big animal lover but I ate meat. I’m actually a vegetarian now wants to be vegan but giving up cheese is the hardest part 😅
Your kindness, being so humble and down to earth, promoting sustainable living without forcing anyone in to it, living a life true to your self, you are such a badass riding that Tuktuk also, I really wish I can meet you in real life, May be next year when I visit lanka. There is this honesty, truthfulness, sincerity in you, I don’t know exactly how to explain it but I can see that thru your videos and I haven’t ever met anyone other than my mother who had that kind of quality in them ❤

    Great Q&A.
Just wondering if you could cut your hours down at Animal SOS and have 2 days off a week instead of just 1. You really do need some downtime as you've so much going on and you don’t want to burn out.
Also am surprised AG1 haven't approached you to do advertising for them. Every vegan TH-camr I follow seem to be working with them. I've been taking it for about 9 months and it is good, although it is expensive.
