    Shows how far we've come technologically: A mini PCB about the size of a deck of cards has more power than the most powerful (and most expensive) real Amiga from the past. And it costs far less too! I'll bet there's a way to attach an Amiga compatible floppy drive to that PI as well, just in case! Nice build, Bill.

    • @TheGuruMeditation
      @TheGuruMeditation  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It is really amazing how far we have come. I would LOVE to be able to attach a floppy drive to it. I know someone just made an adapter for the MiSTer. It would be grand if someone does this for the Pi as well

      @@TheGuruMeditation The Raspberry Pi Foundation (the ones who made the PI of course) just recently came out with "Pico" which is an Arduino-type of micro-controller (for only about $4!). I'll bet one could be used to interface with either an actual Amiga floppy drive (preferable but maybe harder to find) or a newer floppy drive that allows full and precise control of the drive head to read and write Amiga floppies. Of course even PC-compatible floppies are starting to become scarce so who knows? I wish I had the know-how to do something like that!

      @mattx5499 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Having a case and keyboard is understandable, but if you're using emulator the floppy drive is a waste of time. It's far more convenient to use adfs or whdload games from hard drive. Keep your original games on a shelf and don't waste your time for an obsolete medium. For many years people were modding their Amigas to make it most comfortable to use as possible. We were using floppies, because they were cheap and easy to copy, but they were a nuisance. Emulator is designed to run the good old stuff without all the flaws of old computers and consoles, so if you decided to emulate them just make use of it's best features.

    Nice. How about putting a small USB hub inside the case? There is a lot of space left. Then use those USB extenders, with one normal USB plug on one end, and a socket on the other side, which can be surface mounted. This way you'll get 3-4 usb ports on the back of the case and can populate them with devices...

    I'm working on a case for a RetroPie and the thing that's holding me up is panel-mounting stuff like the HDMI port and the USB ports, dremeling the plastic is so nerve-wracking. I'm using a giant old modem case I found at my job, gonna paint it when I'm done!

    • @TheGuruMeditation
      @TheGuruMeditation  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh nice work Vince. Yeah those panel mounts are tricky. I have seen some great 3D printed solutions though. I was just lazy here an ran 3 cables out the back, but honestly it is not as bad as I thought. It isn't as authentic as panel mounts, but it is very easy and efficient to work with.

    I got a Pi400 recently, cant wait for Amikit, having a blast with Pimiga, emulation is only going to get better too! Plus now there projects that use the Pi as Accelerator or GPU for your classic Amiga's. Its really made me wish AmigaOS4 could be ported over to Arm now.

    I came across your video, because I also wanted to do a fun case mode for the Pi 4. Sadly Amiga On The Lake doesn't really have the parts available at this time (May 2021), and as the other user states, it sucks how these builds are so annoying to do because of scant product availability and limited runs. The cases aren't so much an issue, as its more the keyboards.

    Nice very nice. Hey there is nothing wrong with emulation I have been playing with emulation off and on for years even though I have always had one or more Amiga's in the house since the 1980's. Its wicked cool you have yours in an A1200 case with that Kipper2K keyboard. I have a bunch of Amiga Keyboard and a few cases I could use for that but I also have Amiga Themed cases for the Pi3 and Pi4. I absolutely love the Pi and this weekend I plan on setting up a Pi400 to run Pimiga and run it through its paces but not for me so much but something simple to send my Grandkids that will not take up a lot of space.

    • @TheGuruMeditation
      @TheGuruMeditation  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is a cool build too. When you use original parts it probably feels even more like an original Amiga. I never had neon colr LED lights in my real Amiga, lol!

    • @bazza5699
      @bazza5699 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheGuruMeditation hey Bill :) yeah it does have that original feel to it.. although a cherry mechanical keyboard would be amazing. I had to sadly do a bit of butchering of the original case for the keyrah and pi to fit, unlike your case which was designed for alternate use.. another thing I haven't sussed out yet is how to get the case LED's to marry up with disk access.. i'm sure there's a script that could be employed to do that, but the whole project sadly got derailed when i got the MiSTer. Next I'm probably going to cannibalize the pi3 from amiga build to create a mt32-pi to plug into my MiSTer (once I can get my hands on the parts needed lol..) it's all good fun. fantastic to see what you did with yours.

    • @TheGuruMeditation
      @TheGuruMeditation  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It can emulate PPC via QEMU but it is pretty slow. There may be another way, but I am not sure. If you emulate an 040 with JIT it will be faster than a real 060. UnAmiga will fit in an Amiga 500 case and you can put a MiSTer in this case no problem.

    Definitely wants a CDRW Drive because be honest we all wanted one in the old days (especially with a usb video capture device pretending to be a video toaster) and then music can be made.
    Do you guys have the new "Atari VCS console"? If not, is there a way your viewers can get you one? I think Amiga OS needs to be installed on one of those things, and it'd be cool if you guys made a video about it, just like this Pi4 video.
    Ironically, I think the Atari VCS would be a great linux games console if they concentrated on the atari (just like amiga) music scene and used midi drum kits and other devices (microphones etc) for psone-music2000 style creation games akin to RockBand-GuitarHero in style.
    The amiga "mod file" music scene has has some music remade and remastered. The CPU (expecially of that atari VCS ryzen) would be great for realtime effects (like chorus/flanger and reverb on the vocals).
    The Atari Falcon (if rerelased) would have been a great music machine with its FPU.

    I found the emulation a little bit sluggish on the Pi, probably due to the fact that the performance depends heavily on the JIT compiler and ARM might be a little weak in that regard. I prefer the MiSTer for that.

    • @TheGuruMeditation
      @TheGuruMeditation  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have a MiSTer too and I love it. I feel like the MiSTer is a bit more accurate. But I get way better performance out of the Pi in their current states. To be fair the MiSTer is great for anything but most demanding demos and 3D rendered though. I think my MiSTer clicks in as if it was an 040 around 25mhz

    • @RainerK.
      @RainerK. 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The MiSTer might be slower performance rating-wise, but the speed it does offer it offers without any hiccups. I tried running a heavy workbench install on the Pi 4 and even the mouse was laggy and the movement not very smooth. FPGA is definitely the way for such a system.

      @@TheGuruMeditation I was using the Pimiga Lockdown Edition and the mouse felt really sluggish when moving it across the screen, dunno. Even in this video you can see that the mouse movement isn't as smooth as it should be on the Amiga. It's like there is some kind of frame skip.

    Hi, what are you using on your pie, I realize you are using the emulator Amiberry but did you just use the raspberry pi OS and then start Amiberry from there? Could you please elaborate a bit here :-) I have a RPI4 also and would like it to boot straight to Amiberry and this seems possible with Amibian but they just haven't released a 1.5 version for the RPI4 yet and anybody who says otherwise, please supply a downloadlink :-)) I have also tried pimiga 1.4 but this seems somewhat buggy.

  • @MrBorderdown

    An Amiga 1200 is under 500$ US, I don't understand spending nearly 4-500$ to get a janky plastic print and keyboard when you can just hook a USB keyboard up to the RPi? Hell you can put an RPi into a real Amiga case for less money. Or get the A500 mini which is arguably more authentic with mouse and controller? I just don't get it. You're not even using a VGA hat or anything. If you're just doing HDMI why does having an arguably not authentic keyboard and not authentic shell matter for $400 a pop just for those? Tossing money out the window.
