    The UFC has realized after the sport had gone completely international that they don't have to depend on fighters from wealthy g20 nations who expect a bigger purse.. they can bring in fighters from Kazakhstan, Dagestan, Africa, South America, etc to fight at equal to higher talent for less money without any complaints. A $20,000 to show and $20,000 to sign is absolutely nothing for an American where you're essentially in poverty if you make under $45000 a year. But for someone in a developing country, $40000 is a fortune. It's a shame but it's the way it is.

      Really that's dumbest thing I heard.
      These fighters from foreign countries still have to pay taxes.(federal & state) deducted from pay. Than they have to pay for flights for them and crew. Also hotel stay for them and crew.
      Guy coming from Africa to make (20+20) after taxes, management fee, flight & hotel costs for him & his team. He probably taking home $10,000 for the year.

      @@aztronomy7457 nope; not true. They pay for thier TOP PERFORMERS/CHAMPIONS/CHAMPION CONTENTDORS. And that's also if thier management team negotiate it into contract. Sometimes, if ur really big u get the private jet. Also UFC will pay for ur hotel suites.
      However, 90% of UFC fighters have to pay for thier own hotel and flights. Also they have to pay a fee for some medical expenses not alot (UFC covers majority of cost) but the fighter has to pay like $125-$200, deductions.
      Alot of UFC ex fighters exposed this. Look at Dan Hardy interview, when he fought GSP for title. He had to pay for his own hotel, flights for him and his team. His regret was he wished he negotiated a better contract but was juts desperate to get title shot

    It’s very simple.
    1. The fighters are underpaid and have a poor revenue split in comparison to other sports (15-20% in the UFC, compared to the 40-50% for the NHL NBA and NFL)
    2. They have to pay the state a tax before their actual tax
    3. They have to pay for their camps and any injuries outside of the actual fight
    4. The ufc strong arm fighters into long contracts, meaning a fighter can skyrocket in popularity and still be paid money that doesn’t remotely relate to the money their bringing in
    5. They don’t actually get paid their full wage if they lose (no, calling it a “win bonus” isn’t a valid excuse for cutting half a fighters pay)
    6. Fighters in the ufc are forced to only have the Venum sponsor, which is much less than when they could previously earn with their own sponsors

  • @hillo7740
    @hillo7740 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    A major issue I feel isn’t discussed in this video is that having lower salaries has allowed the Ufc to hire more fighters. The nba makes potentially 20 times what the Ufc makes in revenue every year. 50 percent of profits are mandated to be paid out to players. Yet there are only 529 players in the league compared to the Ufc’s 724, Bellator also has 100+ fighters, one championship has 100+ fighters. Unions in the nba are terrific for current owners and current players. They create huge barriers to entry for competition( who’s gonna set up a business when 50% of profits is legally obligated to players), they also create a huge windfall for the athletes(who still go broke because the issue is financial literacy not that they’re not paid enough). They also make it virtually impossible for the average person to get paid to play the sport.
    Like consider there are no unions in soccer. There are roughly 4.2 million professional soccer players vs 529 nba players. All because the top leagues aren’t heavily regulated by union mandates. The UFCs business model is created for expansion. As the owners make money the reinvest into the company and grow it faster.

    • @DirtReynolds34
      @DirtReynolds34 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’m pretty sure soccer does have unions, like there’s the Professional Footballers Association in England, FIFApro globally, and there’s one for MLS in the states.
      And the NBA make about 10x what the UFC does when looking at the 2019 revenues for both, which is still a big difference so I don’t think the UFC could necessarily pay their fighters the same as NBA players, but unions would make it so that fighters could negotiate better contracts than what they have now or keep sponsors for themselves instead of only taking what Dana White gives them. Like a union could’ve stood up for fighters during the Reebok deal which hurt the vast majority of fighters. In addition I don’t think unions would hurt the UFC’s bottom line that much, if at all, considering they are the biggest promotion of the fastest growing sport.
      Also in terms of hiring more fighters I also don’t think that’d be a problem since a lot of people were competing in MMA and the UFC back in the day when there was almost no money to be made for even the top guys , meaning there will always be people, and a lot of them, willing to become UFC fighters to do what the love.

    • @hillo7740
      @hillo7740 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@DirtReynolds34 you’ve missed a fair bit of my point here, the MLS has a very strong union like most American sports because there’s no promotion/relegation in the sport. Creating a huge windfall for the players and owners. That’s also the reason the MLS sucks!
      The whole point of the Reebok deal was to bolster the UFC’s public image like in any sport. No other sport league allowed their athletes to wear their own sponsors including the nba and mls!
      If you want your own sponsors, Bellator is a perfectly acceptable option. Hiring more fighters would inherently be a problem! Because as in the other leagues, the owners realise the more they hire, the less profit overall they’re entitled to!

    • @TheMagnificentMongoSlade
      @TheMagnificentMongoSlade 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Unions are a corrupting force in business, and, as you stated, limit competition.
      There's only ONE NBA, NFL, MLB, NHL for a reason: union costs.
      Look at the auto industry. Its rife with corruption from labor unions and the auto industry has been dying on a vine for decades because of it.
      Costs have skyrocketed and its affected production and demand. This is why auto companies routinely have to be bailed out.
      Unions would shrink the sport of MMA by keeping out many who wish to pursue the dream and killing promotions that can't afford the increased production costs.
      This video essentially states that medicore MMA fighters make medicore money, which seems commiserate with their skill level. Its the same in every endeavor.
      Boxing seems to do really well without unions.

    Any sport that involves individual, non-unionized and non-salaried athletes, is a formula where the actual athletes get not nearly what they bring in. UFC, Any fighting circuit, Boxing , Tennis, Golf, and if you want to include poker even. Those in top 100 status, but not top 20 talent wise, have to pay for all the things mentioned in the video, plus travel costs and hotels too to move them and entourage around the world to where ever the events are taking place. But their returns barely cover the costs to take part in the circuit. Many tennis players have to even travel by themselves just to cut costs, so it also becomes a lonely existence for many players. I saw a documentary about such a case for a relatively well known women tennis Pro.

    Eliminate your largest monthly recurring expense if you have a lump sum of money. Pay off a mortgage. This gives you an asset that you can liquidate in an emergency and a place to live if shit goes south lol

    If I remmeber correctly the UFC pays something like 18% of their total revenue to the fingers while other leagues like the NBA pay something like 46%.
    Fighters are getting ripped off and it's hard for them to unionize because if a fighter holds out then another fighter steps up (usually for less money).

      NBA players are employees and UFC fighters are independent contractors. That's one main difference. Also, NBA is a league not a promotion.

    I know first-hand there is a fighter who grossed $2.1M just in sponsorship money for one fight before the Reebok deal who isn't on whatever list was put together with the little publicly available information there is to go on. But what is public information is the UFC only shares 18% of their revenue with the athletes, which is why your favorite UFC fighter is broke.
    Oh, and when the Reebok deal broke, I sent a text to a fighter I know who had fought recently for KOTC. He made more in sponsorship money for a fight you never knew happened than any UFC fighter was paid by Reebok.

    Would the UFC have lower or higher operating costs that of other major sports leagues like MLB or soccer leagues? I would guess lower, making the revenue split an even worse deal for the fighters.

This video really confirms that. I'm glad he managed to succeed. Good for him. I only wish he would pay his fighters more :/

It's not including taxes, training, gym fee Fighters struggle and have to borrow money just to support basic needs. Heavyweight champion said he doesn't make enough money to survive. Kamaru Usman even told his cousin if he wanna make money don't go to the UFC.
