We should be able to harvest rain water, but sadly, our educational system does teach us this. My Grandmother told me that those vertical standing stones(monolith) are carried by people and placed in the battlefield while fighting against the British, to make them look like tall strong people from afar and scared the British army away.

In North & Central India, you won't find many women outside, or as shopkeepers. Only in the NE, SW-Coast, or Ladakh, those cultures have women on equal footing.
It's just that women in northeast and the other areas you mentioned are better for women in opportunities. It's more than north india but that doesn't mean women in North India don't work as shopkeepers
