In regarding ice hockey, Finland won both Olympic Gold medal and World championship last year. At least were sitting as ranked number 1 above all those. Generally speaking worlds best/talented ice hockey countries are: Canada, Russia, Sweden, Finland and USA. But also in recent years Germany and Switzerland haa been catching up too. During the last 10 years Finland has been playing for medals in world championships 7 times and won gold twice (4 times overall). Finland has always been known as a ice hockey country who produces very good goalies and team players. Play very well as a team with few star players. Most notable ones being Jari Kurri, Teemu Selänne and Saku Koivu.

But previous two Olympic Games were played without NHL players and World Championships are played mostly with same rosters plus few NHL players, who mostly are role players, not stars. So those medals really do not matter. It is like football World Cup without players from Premier League, Serie A, La Liga and Bundesliga.

@@RoyalMela There have always been "nay" sayers like you. It might not matter to you, but it does matter to many others. Anyways i do agree that we should get NHL players into olympics (obviously) but it is not our fault they are not there. Also to say Roman Josi, Aleksandr Ovechkin, Pavel Datsyuk, Evgeni Malkin, (to name a few) arent star players tells me everything i need to know about your knowledge on hockey.
Your football analogy doesnt make sense either, if you want to make comparison it would be more like you dont have players from Champions League teams. Top European leagues are still available and its not like there isnt any skills in those. (like World Championships 2019 shoved you/us)

I came to comment this exact same thing.
Literally since most servers (most likely like 95% or above*) run Linux, I think it's one of the most important things Finland has done.
Well, Linus Torvalds. He didn't speak Finnish (he spoke Swedish), but was born in Finland, studied in the Helsinki university and so on.
And since most things rely on the internet and therefore webservers these days, I'd say that's pretty important.
Who knows what could've been the alternative and how long it would've taken otherwise to find a suitable operating system for server use. Windows isn't exactly spectacular in that department (as good as it is for desktop use and gaming).

    • @Gittas-tube
      @Gittas-tube ปีที่แล้ว +3

@Jantzku Hi there! Xylitol is not an ordinary sugar at all. It is used not only in chewing gums but also in pastils, for example. In Finland, some dentists even give their patients a complimentary box of xylitol pastils. The word xylitol is a combination of the Greek word for wood 'xylo-' and 'tol' for menthol.
Xylitol works by neutralizing the acids in one's mouth after a meal or some sour, acidic products like fruits and berries. This protects the enamel of the teeth and thus helps to prevent caries. I believe that it is the sap from the birch trees which is used, but I may be wrong here.

I believe Finland has been ranked number one multiple years lately due to two time gold medal and I would say pretty much as long as I remember, getting left outside top 4 in the championships has been a tragedy. Finland has been in the top 4 for 20/30 times since 1992, the first medal. 4 golds, 9 silvers and 3 bronzes. Currently Canada is number 1. Canada is Finland's kryptonite in ice hockey. Just impossible to win for Finland. Russia is the favourite opponent in medal matches, ez win every time, they just can't handle Finns (despite playing really dirty). Sweden is a flip of a coin, can go 6-1 or 1-6. Always very scary opponent. The rest aren't too scary, depends on the year but usually can expect to win by hard work.
Finland is known for slow plays up, very methodical game in the offense, very responsible in defense (everybody defends, no star players with attitude, almost like winter war mentality of everyone carrying their weight and not taking any glory over others, they succeed and fail together). The most successful head coach has been known for not picking individual stars the public expects to see, or grabbing NHL players when they get out from the league/playoffs, and instead he has built a well functioning team of players with less name under their belt. All good players, just not the number one shining individuals. They play a lot together during the tour before championship games and they all learn the system of playing as a team. That's what makes them so successful, even though on paper they shouldn't be matching some of these teams with a lot of stars. Oh and Finland is known for churning out these best goalies in the game one after another. Every single world championship games both goalies will get signed to NHL or at least KHL (or used to, now KHL is out of question). Finnish goalies have turned many team's tides and allowed them to build the team from ground up while staying in the game, many players seem to appreciate them for being these humble work horses that keep the net mostly clean for most of the night, no matter how terrible the match was and don't let it get in their head. They tend to give a fighting chance on the off days too. In the last decade Finns have had some star offense players, great shooters, because the junior system focused on the lack of scoring and the problem when even the offense men didn't shoot a lot and didn't hit the net missing many sure goals, the rest being completely handless with shots.
The last few years there's been like 1-2 teams in the whole NHL that hasn't had a single Finn. Many have two or even more. Many have a young Finn fighting for the top scorer title. Pretty decent for a 5 million people population country.
Btw it was cool to see UK in the world championship some time ago. It's nice to see ice hockey getting stronger in more and more countries that dragged behind. It's really tough to get to semi-finals with so many classic ice hockey countries in Europe, but places like Germany and Switzerland have really given a run for the money on some years.
Talking about Nokia, just this year I've had two engineering lectures by Nokian Tyres. They've sort of being at the front of civil tire innovations for a long time. For an engineer their quality work is really exciting. And they came up with freaking LED tires and tires that have studs that are pushed out, controlled electronically from the front panel of the car. It's a really cool promo video. Although it was far from reasonable and production worthy, but they made the tech necessary. I think they used to be part of the same sister organization complex or something with Nokia rubber boots and mobile phones at some point in history. Nokia btw is a county next to Tampere. And I recently learned Nokia had acquired the legendary Bell Labs in the US. Since I was kid, probably more like since my parents days, everyone has had Nokia rubber boots here.
Finns also invented IRC, Internet Relay Chat, which is probably still the base for most online real time chats like Twitch.tv's chat. But I'm sure Finns came up with text messaging to avoid phone calls. And I've seen the original video you're watching and I still watch it like "oh, didn't remember that was invented in Finland". Like we really don't talk about that stuff much so not too many people know here either. And I believe that's a problem with the Finnish society or marketing. There's a commission that is actively trying to come up with things to promote Finland's image abroad and market the stuff we invent and produce here. Finns just aren't very good at drumming those kind of marketable and sellable things outside.
Btw majority of xylitol used in Finnish products doesn't even come from Finnish birches. Learned that just recently, there was a news article. You just get it so cheap in batches from elsewhere. Finns didn't even know the local products they buy don't have local xylitol. The funniest thing to me is that people don't know about xylitol chewing gum other than maybe Japanese. I believe it's the number one dental product after toothbrush and toothpaste that improves dental hygiene. Like it beats me when I as a kid got to eat some international chewing gum that was just like a very soft rubber full of sugar. I couldn't understand it. Instead I throw two refreshing pieces of xylitol Jenkki peppermint chewing gum in my mouth after a meal and enjoy the end of the attack (not sponsored by Jenkki but I'd be glad to be). You can find multiple flavours of Jenkki on every grocery store checkout and candy shelf here.
Talking about Finnish games, some people know Max Payne, Alan Wake, Trials and Trine. Then there's DOS classics from the 90's but those are more like you know them if you know them. Like Death Rally, by the same studio that made Max Payne and Alan Wake. Rovio actually means a big bonfire, the kind you burn witches on. Or celebrate some pagan holiday like midsummer. It's funny to me how popular Angry Birds became, because all my youth I'd play online games like that, they were 10 in a dozen flash games for free. And they just slammed some birds and pigs on it and made a massive fortune by selling it for money. I think that's innovative in its own right, seize the opportunity you see.
I think one more modern innovation could be Framery's isolated meeting booths. It's like a semi-mobile isolated phone booth type of thing where you can have some privacy in an office for a meeting or these days I see modified versions for studying in the university hallway as well, some accommodating multiple people in one. I think that's a pretty solid innovation, actually had a pleasure to interact with the engineer who was part of designing some of them.

Then second championship in 2011, third in 2019 and fourth in 2022. There is a thing called "Big Six" that includes Canada, USA, Russia, Sweden, Finland and Czechia. Ice hockey is still big in Finland and we have good players, but it is smaller sport nationwide than it used to be, mainly because tv rights and league being somewhat closed. You can enter but you can't drop to minor leagues if you have the funding, basically. Faulty system but great national team, I guess.

But when it comes to inventions, I think that Scotland is way - I mean - way above Finland. They say that everything was invented in China , but as a matter of fact - no, it was actually Scotland. You guys have invented such a glorious, never ending list of things. Like rubber tires (or vulcanization of rubber in general), Television, Penicillin, Refridgerator, MRI scan, ATM, Color photography, Kaleidoscope, Flushing toilet, Finger printing, Steam engine, Special forces...the list goes on and on - forever! Only thing you didn't actually invent was, well, telephone. It was not invented by Graham Bell as everyone thinks.
