My wife works at clothing store -- big name on the upper end of retail pricing --- every single day she comes home and tells me stories how people are stealing stuff, and it's not just your typical dirt bags, it's upper end people, old ladies, seemingly people looking well off, etc etc. Makes me wonder how many people out there have been faking it with their houses and cars and boats and other worldly crap.

Even when people were flush with stimulus money, retail thefts in CA were way up because CA decriminalized shoplifting from a felony to a misdemeanor. This is one reason Walgreens shut down in San Fransico.

I haven't been shoplifting but... as a Target shopper I've definitely noticed really outrageous prices on some things. Many times I've checked the price on something with one of their scanners and set it back down because I'm not paying that much. A lot of times it's things that you look at and think it shouldn't be much... like for example, some rinky dink plastic stocking stuffer toy that last year would be $3. Now it's $7. I had that happen yesterday with a couple things and just put it back. I COULD pay that much, I'm just not going to. That's just one example. So many of the cheaper items are creeping up in price. And with some of that stuff if isn't cheap ,it's just plain not worth buying at all.

Then, BlackRock and the government can swoop in and save everyone by buying up the properties so at least peop can walk away with some funds. Then they'll turn around and clean up the city, purging addicts & criminals and rent those homes & apartments at a premium.

Speaking as someone who works in tech...but not top flight tech, I can say there are plenty of 80k-150k tech jobs available if you have the skills and a little experience (3-5 years). The jobs that are being lost are at the "elite" Wall Street star tech firms that were paying 200k and up with stock options, free lunches and lots of other perks. Those are probably less than 5% of the whole industry. Those displaced workers are getting a serious reality check right now but so far it's only a small, highly visible part of the industry.

I'm from Chicago and crime here is completely out of control. The sad thing is that nobody really does anything to stop this. I'm predicting that things are only going to get a lot worse and some of these business are going to go out of business because there's only so much losses these companies can absorb. Legit gangs of people who steal things as a job. These are not people that are selling the items they stole on Ebay and Amazon. These are well run and organized operations, they have employees, they are targeting specific items and everything. Its basically every retail company. You can't really stop them when they will do it with 20 people at the same time. This has been increasing for years, it has nothing to do with the state of the economy.

One thing that retailers do is work shrink into their financial plans each year. Retail theft cannot be stopped, but there is a threshold/limit of what "can be stolen", for lack of a better phrase. Put simply, each retailer reaches a dollar amount they are willing to accept in terms of theft (locations with higher numbers are usually marked as "high-shrink" stores, and are monitored very closely). With that being said, I seriously doubt that your Targets or WalMarts have written $600M worth of theft into their financial plans! In my 10+ years in retail, I have never seen the shrink numbers this high just for one year. You are right; it is INSANE that so many are getting away with this.

It's really easy to spot the difference between the organized retail thefts, they've shown the videos where one guy opens the door and then a mob rushes in with trash bags and starts emptying the place in minutes and the single people who steal things out of poverty like bread and laundry detergent. I think we'll only see more of both unless consequences change. It's sad when people have nothing but this type of retail theft only gets passed onto the people who pay for what they get. I know people who joke about doing their holiday shopping in CA as you can essentially legally steal there and people even show up with calculators so they don't get arrested for going over the limit.
