Left my wallet at a mall toilet. I was carrying a lot of paper bags so I forgot about it. I only discovered I lost it a day after. 2 days after, the mall management contacted me on Messenger and asked if I have any missing item and to confirm my identity (because I had IDs in my wallet). When I went to the mall office, they returned my wallet with everything in it. Didn’t lose anything.

I’m Filipino American and even I can tell that there are a lot of things the Philippines does better in. I studied abroad there. One thing is variety. Sure Internet and phone providers are expensive but the options of payment and even how to pay it is plenty. Someone struggling with money can still own a phone because of that option. This variety also goes to the products. For example mini shampoo packets vs the whole shampoo is not even an option outside the Philippines. That extra money saved in products using that method is not even possible for the poor in the US. It doesn’t even end with products but also happen with food as well. The portions might be smaller than the whole meal but at least many as in even most of the poor can afford. Another thing I notice is that in some cities and provinces they have what is called a “Plastic free” policy as in all establishments in that area do not use plastic bags; they use recyclable brown paper bags and most locals bring in their own reusable bag when they shop. They also have a worker take your stuff to the car if you have many stuff bought, something that isn’t common in the US anymore. Another one is mall security. I feel more safe in the malls there than in American malls (b/c of the increase in shootings). I like that security here carry guns and that most are friendly enough to ask where a certain bathroom/store/ect. is. They also know where almost everything is. This also applies to security in other establishments like schools. Lastly, one thing the country does better in is socialization. The malls, the events there and the culture in general really forces people to interact. I felt less lonely there than in the US. Everyone in every age interacted with each other with much less hostility and I barely seen awkward people.

@@Stephen_Jabs keep in mind that "provinces" is not congruent to "underdeveloped."
A province is purely an administrative division. No more no less. I lived and live in two provinces, and both are pretty well-developed. I've also lived in Meteo Manila around the U-Belt and Recto. I must say, living in the afotementioned provinces are better.
The only thin I miss in Manila is that it is the country's cultural center hence more events and festivals as wellas concerts.
But for living, I prefer the developed rural areas. I hate the sky being blocked by skyscrapers. As well as the annoying noise and air pollution. Not to mention the disorganized areas save for CBDs like Makati, BGC, or some area in QC.

Many things that the Philippines has are ignored or not appreciated by many Filipinos. Because most people are ignorant of what is and is not in other countries. It's people like you who are raising the awareness of many Filipinos to appreciate what the Philippines has. Usually, foreigners need to confirm them so that Filipinos believe that there are many good things in the Philippines compared to other countries. However, there is still a lot of deficiency in the Philippines when compared to developed countries. But the importance of having a safe and peaceful life even if simple is still more important.
Thank you very much for your insightful views on these matters. Keep it up and enjoy your stay in the Philippines.

Life in the Philippines around 30 years ago was in some respects similar to how you described Dominican Republic on the aspects of security, transportation and traffic practices, and treatment of LGBTQ. It’s good that we have improved on these things.
On free water, up to about 30 years ago, water was never sold in bottles. It was a joke to think that someday, we might have to buy drinking water. Now it’s happening. 😢
Most of your observations about internet, GCash, food delivery, shopping apps, etc. developed full scale during the pandemic. Filipinos are the best in adapting to challenging situations.

I am Filipino living here in Canada for 15 years now. I have travelled to many countries in Latin America. In comparison, the Philippines is much safer except in slum areas or places that poverty are quite evident. Although some countries in Central America I felt relatively safe (such as Cuba, PR, El Salvador and Nicaragua), but many countries in South America, tourists are always an easy target in street crimes or scams. Even here in Canada, there are places in Toronto and Vancouver that aren't safe to go to due to high crimes in relation to drug uses and homelessness. The Philippines is also more tolerant and progressive in terms of basic rights. We are heading in the right direction i suppose.

I ate at the food court in a mall 15 years ago in Davao City, Philippines. Then I forgot my phone left on the table. Like I was already walking around the mall for more than 20 minutes before I remembered my phone. Then I went back to the table. I was happy because it was still there. Knowing that there were many people eating and the food court was very busy because it was lunch time. One time too, I forgot my wallet. Then when I came back to the restaurant I couldn't find my wallet anymore. Good thing, the waiter asked me if I was looking for a wallet. He asked me to describe the appearance of the wallet. Then he gave it back to me. Hahaha! When I left my country, Phillipines, then I migrated to another country. I then realized that my country wasn't really that bad. I missed a lot of things now. Soon, I will go back for vacation and excited to eat at Jollibee, Penongs, Greenwhich, Taps and Chowking.

In case you didn't know the Philippines was really really like our Latino cousins in terms of rules, social etiquette, road behaviors etc before. Until Filipinos learned from our Asian neighbors particularly, Singapore, Japan, Hongkong or Malaysia where discipline and respect for others' time and peace of mind are honored and well-maintained. These things like bus lanes, gender segregation, PWDs, etiquette in using the escalators, these were mainly borrowed by Filipinos from our Asian neighbors not to mention, the e-Money thing, this is so prevalent in our Asian neighbors. So, props to them, Filipinos realized that a carefree and too much freedom isn't really sustainable and it will eventually take a toll on our lives. Hence, overtime as our population have grown, our cities have become larger and larger, our government as well as our behavior have also become mindful to think of ways to alleviate public inconvenience. We looked to our Asian neighbors like Korea, Japan, Taiwan, Singapore etc and borrowed their best practices. I guess, it has really helped us a lot big time.

Year 2000 before food delivery was a thing, we were in the PH visiting and we had food delivered from places like Burger King and KFC, to our house. Even in the USA food delivery did not become more popular until the pandemic.
Another thing in year 2000, texting was widespread in the PH and that was with a brick cell phone, not a smart phone. I didn’t understand at the time. Another decade later perhaps when the rest of the world would pick up on this practice. Mind blowing!

Thank you for this comparison. Yes there is so much to love here in the Philippines although regarding criminal activities, you still have to be careful. Many of my friends have already been held-up and robbed of their bags and cellphones while riding Jeepneys, walking on well-lit areas among others. These are usually done by organized groups with 2 or 3 backups standing watch and pointing out potential victims. A couple of my friends got victimized multiple times including my girlfriend who was recently stabbed and shot. Thank goodness she is recovering but badly traumatized. I pray that you both will never get to experience that as long as you live here in this country. You have been blessed and well loved.

Thanks for these observations. They give me the nudge that we are enjoying blessings that other countries or cultures have yet to experience. Enjoy your stay in the Philippines. Que sea lo más placentera y memorable posible.

This happened in Pasay City, A friend came to me and my cousin and asked us if we can retrieve the phone and a necklace thats been snatched from her when she was passing by Estrella st. and she asked us because we lived in Salud st. which is right next to Estrella and we were able to retrieve her phone and necklace because we knew who run those street. We just explained to them that she's our cousin
Ps. She did not report it to the police thinking that she might NOT get her belongings back if she report it.

The way you describe your country, the Dominican Republic, will sound very familiar with most Filipinos because the things you described as "better" here in the Philippines were not just a few years ago. Most things you mentioned are very recent development.

Also, more and more employers here in the Philippines are paying their employees through Gcash or Paymaya.
    I find this so convenient.

such interesting topic! while we might be better in the areas you’ve mentioned, there’s still a long way to go for the philippines especially in transpo and lgbtq rights. it’s sad to hear some of the situations in dominican republic. it will just get better from here on. we all deserve better and it’s never wrong to demand/desire for a better life.

Sometimes I lose hope and I think until the boomers leave the power things won't change in my beloved country (in terms of rights for LGBTQ+)

    • @bmona7550
      @bmona7550 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@SolLunaTV The Philippines is actually improving because from what I notice there are a considerable number of younger politicians (younger than 45 years old) there and also interestingly women politicians or those in higher positions of power. So you are right about the boomers, they really hold countries back in politics..

Regarding stolen items, if you report it to police station. The incharge police will show a book full of people with criminal records with photos.. and if that person was on the book, then you can retrieve your stolen item.. thats what happen to my friend, the police just told her to get back on the next day. And yes, she got her cellphone back.. thats how it is here in cebu..

Hello! Sol and Luna. We’re Filipinos l big in North Carolina. We’ve been following your Vlog. Thanks for making my country famous. And that other Hispanic countries recognized and respect our culture. Years ago my son served 2 years of mission there from the Church of Jesus Christ of later day Saints and love the Dominicans. He said that there a lot of similarities. After 2 years he came home speaking fluent Dominican Spanish. He kept the language and now live in Albuquerque NewMexico USA. More power to your vlog. Life is not perfect , we work hard to achieve our dream(s), have faith In God to realize that dream. We hope and pray that people in government or business will truly be there to serve the community as they earn their keeps too. In the end each person caring for their neighbor is what matters. Just saying 🙏
