Broadcast Music, Inc. (BMI) is one of the four major United States performing rights organizations, along with ASCAP, SESAC, and SoundExchange. It collects license fees on behalf of songwriters, composers, and music publishers and distributes them as royalties to those members whose works have been performed.
This is even way better than the actual BMI help video. Thank you! Question on "samples" if you do "royalty free samples" do you need say yes there still? Again, great job thank you for this video and info. Peace.
What if you get a placement with a rapper? And you are a music producer that collaborated with another producer using a loop or sample they made? How can we ensure that we both get paid? the royalties and Etc? I think this very important for me and many other producers who send out beats to artist with or without labels and they get recorded on/ or placements
What's the difference if you put yes for the film movie, music library? Just incase it do have a movie placement but it's not the prominent purpose for the track
Listed as a songwriter on a famous song with 3 other writers and a publisher - I am seeking a way to find out where my royalties are going. The song is from 1970 and was featured in "The Harder They Come" movie and soundtrack and has millions of hits and almost 100 covers - any help will bemuc appreciated
Quick question, should you register for Distrokid then BMI? Also, are those the only two someone needs to sign up for to recoup royalties and have music distributed? Thank you in advance.
Good question. So to answer your question yes it is good to sign up for both especially if you will be releasing your own music. And as far as collection all your royalties you could get up to 5 checks off of one song. 1) Streaming Royalties (Distrokid) 2) BMI Publishing 3) Soundexchange (Non Interactive Streams) 4) Music Reports ( Mechanical Royaltiese 5) Sync (If your Song Lands into a TV Show, Movie, Web Series ETC.
Super good tutorial! Quick question. What if I had co-produced a song with another producer which got placed on a album. how would I go about getting my percentage/share? I just got my BMI account set up today so I am able to register stuff I have co-produced. I did find the track on the BMI Repetoire. The producer who i co-produced with on the beat is on the writers/composers section as well as the Publishers section. On the step where it asks ''Are there any publishers on this work?'' I would click yes and then proceed to enter the other co producers details? if this is correct how would I know what the ownership % and collection % is? In the Repetoire for the track, I can see the percentage on that song as far as writers/composers and publishers section (controlled %) would that be it or?? Any help or advice would be appreciated! Thank you! PS: There are two other publishers on the BMI Repetoire so 3 in total including the person who coproduced the beat with me.
Thanks for the great video. I’m having trouble signing up for songwriting. After I fill out the form and click next it goes through the validation process and says try again later. 🤔
Thanks for this video. I have a couple questions... 1. Should I copyright my song BEFORE I register it with BMI? 2. When the question is asked... "Does this work contain samples or medleys"... if I have used "Royalty-Free" samples in my song should I still click NO? 3. When the question is asked... "Are there any publishers on this work"... If I registered as a publisher on BMI should I click Yes? 4. When the question is asked... "Are there any artist"... if I made a instrumental song should I click "Yes" because I'm the artist or should I click "NO" because there's nobody singing or rapping on the song and it's just a instrumental with no featured artist?
This is excellent bro, I have joined BMI following your steps but what if I have album of 18 tracks or EP of 5 tracks. How do I register it with all the tracks. Will I have to register the tracks one by one as a single or as album or EP? I am confused about this please answer me 🙏
Hello Mr Beats If I’m planing on joining the publishing part of Tune Core does that conflict with answering no to the question is there any other publisher. They also as u know collect for sync licenses . So are there any conflicts here. Appreciate your feed back . Thanks Al
I'm trying to figure out how to add an AKA. It's saying, "If you have a pseudonym or AKA, please add the name here. You do have the option to enter up to two pseudonyms or AKAs. After saving please use the (+) option to add additional names." Then I tried to add one and it's saying, "AKAs cannot match your personal name or previous AKA." I don't want to register under only my name but my stage name and my pseudonym. Do you know if there's a bug right now?
Once a track is registered, what is expected to do with the work id? Should it be embedded into the metadata of the recording sound file? Is that necessary to go full loop and for BMI (or any other PRO) to collect the royalties? Thank you for a great video!
Greetings my brother. give thanks for your great work, keep it up my family. hmm I'm registered with BMI, and already established my online services account, do I need a publisher before I registered my songs on BMI?
Question I have beats but I’ve never put them on any platform I just put a little bit on ig that’s about can I still sign up with BMI and also do I have to copyright them before I sign with BMI. Thank you.
Hi just signed up following your video thank you ❤️ My question to you I tried logging in can't login. but I haven't gotten any feedback yet from BMI no email or anything I just signed up and went through the agreement What should I do
Dope vid fam do you know how to collect the money through the pseudo name? I already have a dba registered with the state which I’m trying to use for this
The musician did most of the music, has asked for 20% of writers' share and 20% of publishing. As the author, I get the rest. How do I submit the splits in each section of BMI when registering?
another thing, i am a producer and have a songwriters account with bmi but do not have the BMI LIVE tab on the left side of my screen, do you know any reasons/solutions to this ?
Another good question. It will depend on when you signed up, BMI live is for when you preform because you get paid royalties on your live performances too. And it lets you upload up to 6 months worth of performance info to be considered for payment. So if you was doing a bunch of shows you may need to send them an email to help getting that setup.
I'm in a music project with a friend, he writes and sings it, I accompany and produce it ...what should my % be as a producer? Thanks very much for your great video.
Good question, there’s two ways BMI knows it’s your song 1. Is from the metadata embedded in your song once you register & upload it to streaming platforms and 2. From content ID which is built into TH-cam a lot of it is dependent on Content ID so you will have to make sure your DSP provides that feature, but here’s an article going further in depth on how the process works. www.ascap.com/help/royalties-and-payment/make-money-youtube
What do I do when it says : as submitting writer, your writer details must be entered on this work? I don’t know where to put details in. It’s keeping me from moving to step 4.
Question please, what if my track contains a few copyright samples and then you play those tracks live in concert, can I as the songwriter still register it with my PRO and get paid when I play them live? Or is that not allowed cuz of the copyright?
so i have a question, wont i have to upload a file so when my song is played bmi can hear it and know know it belong to me? or is the title of the song enough?... like how does bmi connect the song title to the actual song being played to generate income? also what if the song is yours but the beat is not
20th May 2022 was BMI royalty distribution date but I never received any royalty or email about payment till today. My bank account too has been active since the last 3 months. Can I get any idea about this?
aight so learning this whole process. willing to go with ascap as producer and writer. so question: i made a beat, wrote my lyrics. recorded it mastered. have a final mp3 . all in my house right... if i register it on ascap, then take the song and put it on itunes or submit to spotify like.. is there anything else an artist need to to have. legally, do i need to make a buisness
I have a question and hopefully you can help. I'm signed up with BMI and I'm trying to register my album. I'm the writer to every song (100%) but I'm not the composer/Producer and I have multiple producers on my album. I have the unlimited and exclusive rights to every beat and I own 100% of writers share. How do I register multiple producers and their share of publishing? I have their IPI# information but don't know where to place it. Do I register each song on my album separately?
I registered as a publisher first. My publisher approval came back fairly quick. I registered as a song writer on 4-18-22. I haven't received my approval as of 4-18-22. Does it take 10 days?
My daughter is releasing her new single. She is co-writer. How can I get her set up through BMI to collect royalties if shes a minor (15)? What is the process?
Hey my G I already completed all steps and paid for the submission but they didn't gave me a user name or password, how long should I wait for the application to start working?
Can anyone pleasee answer ASAP. So i just sent my artists label my BMI number and full name. Do they take care of everything over there or do i have to register the song too? I am the producer of the song
