  • So I did get results but not the ones I thought I would. So far H1 and H2 are as corrosion resistant as each other.

You could probably create a corrosion proof blade by putting an impermeable coating on the knife tang before putting the handle on. Then you will prevent crevice corrosion at the tang.

That’s a good idea I can look into. I’m going to try something else too. I bought a 3/4 thick piece of Magnacut and I’m planning to carve a knife, handle and all from it. So no crevices. I won’t work on that until a while from now. Thank you for the new ideas i appreciate it.

Ha ha yeah. They like to stop by to see what I’m doing.

Or maybe the H1, that continues down and in the handle of the knife, might have tiny hardware particles from the manufacturing process, that corroded.

      That could be possible too.

Do you think that crevice corrosion might not have caused H1 to rust but any other tiny particles that got stuck in the crevice. It should be interesting to see if you somehow you remove the handle whether the H1 is corroded or it is only in the surface

I don’t know. This is a legitimate possibility but I don’t really want to cut the handle to find out. When I looked into crevice corrosion I found out that even titanium can corrode. So, it’s very possible that H1 is corroding in this test.
I’m mostly interested in seeing how “rust proof” steels compete against each other. Even though my original reason was to make a full rust proof knife which I now believe to be impossible.

H1 is definitely susceptible to crevice corrosion it's in the same class as 316ss. I doubt the manufacturing process would have metallic particles in the handle during the molding process.

@@JohnFrumFromAmerica maybe more experimentation is needed regarding crevice corrosion. As far as I know, H2 (and the discontinued H1) is the best knife SS metal apart from titanium (which I don't know if is susceptible in cc) until now.

@@SPYROSMANTZAKOSit's only the best for a blade material. It's very middle of the road in regards to stainless steels in general. Super duplex with a PREN number over 40 is recommended for continuous salt water immersion. The PREN number for H1 I think is similar to 304 or 316 around 25 to 30 so I would expect it to perform about the same as them. I recommend reading up on PREN number to better understand the corrosion performance of stainless steels.

@@SPYROSMANTZAKOS titanium is definitely not susteptable to crevice corrosion in any normal environment. The only way it could corrode is to use very powerful chemicals. In the ship building piping industry we generally consider titanium to be impervious to sea water corrosion. 304 is considered not acceptable and 316 is considered either bearly adequate or inadequate depending on the operation of the ship. If they are in the open ocean alot 316 is considered acceptable if in port a lot then it's not acceptable. However it should be noted that sea water piping is a lot more corrosive environments than you would ever expect a knife to be subjected to.

Ha ha nice. I should count these in my future tests too. So far I get a minimum of three free spiders.
