Texture filtering is totally subjective, I don't experience any sprite wobble, but I understand what you mean with the "painted" look, kinda like they're made out of glossy clay. @@rico2smooth4u57 These videos seem to help people, and that makes me happy, so I'll probably keep at it until I stop playing DOOM myself. Which I can't see happening any time soon :P GZDoom 4.3.2 is out now. Nothing's really changed as far as graphics settings are concerned though, so I don't feel a pressing need to update this guide. I'm considering doing a more advanced guide to setting up GZDoom though, using ZDL and reshare and some HD mods. So keep an eye out for that in the nearish future ;)
Portals are what they sound like, mostly. It's when you seamlessly walk from one area into another, despite the latter area not being connected to the same section of map. It's used fairly frequently, and you can catch it if you spend a lot of time looking at the map when you run around. AO stands for Ambient Occlusion, which is a fancy lighting effect. So the portals with AO setting adjusts how much Ambient Occlusion happens between the two sections. IE lighting from one section spilling into the other. Turning it up uses more resources but looks better. I've read that portals with AO doesn't play well with Brutal Doom (and perhaps some other mods as well), but I can't remember where I heard that at the moment.
@@ketarel Before I stumbled upon your video I had them set to 2 and never noticed an issue with BD, but then, I also never noticed any visual difference, so...
@@3dmaster205 AO in general is hard to notice sometimes, it highly depends on the room, the lighting, and where everything is. Portals with AO is probably something you'd notice if you were standing in front of a portal and turning it on and off, but generally with the fast pace of the game it can be easy to miss. I've also played Brutal Doom and had Portals with AO turned all the way up and it's (seemed) fine. Perhaps it only affects specific maps, or has problems in conjunction with other mods. I'm not sure, and I can't seem to find the source of where I read that information about Portals with AO and Brutal Doom not playing well, so maybe I'll leave that out of my next video :P
Depends on a great many things. Make sure you turn "texture filtering mode" to "none" because that adds a lot of smoothing (re blur). The type and multiplier of resizing has a huge effect on this as well, obviously. Also your monitor and it's resolution are a factor. If you're running on the latest top of the line hardware and have everything perfectly calibrated, you still might not like resizing, it's very much a personal preference. Also, I have a much more recent video that goes a little more in depth: th-cam.com/video/8QpU1IYU2S8/w-d-xo.html Hopefully I'll release another video soon, because the current version of GZDoom (4.7.1) has some significant changes. So yeah!
Uh, yeah I'm not sure. That would depend on your computer specs and a bunch of other factors. I'd start by turning Multisampling to 0, lowering the number of particles and decals, lowering your High Quality Resize multiplier, changing Rendering Quality to "Speed", turning down Shadowmap quality, etc. Lowering your resolution might help, or changing to Vulkan renderer. Try enabling Janitor in Brutal Doom options too.
@@n4sty948 hmmm if you have 16gigs of ram then that should be enough to handle everything at max settings... set multisampling down to 0, and lower particles and decals to under 1000 each and see if that helps. if you're playing a custom wad, sometimes there's so many monsters that your system is going to lag no matter what you do (wads like foursite: www.doomworld.com/idgames/levels/doom2/Ports/d-f/foursite)

9900k is a lil old at this point... You'd be lucky to run it at the ideal cinematic 30fps. I suggest investing in a good gaming chair and a buttload of RGB to really get that FPS up :)
Depends on the version of doom you have on steam. For Ultimate Doom, look in: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Ultimate Doom\base You're looking for DOOM.WAD, also DOOM2.WAD, TNT.WAD, PLUTONIA.WAD, or any other wads you might have depending on what DOOM package you have bought on steam. Just copy the WAD to your GZDoom directory, either by holding ctrl+dragging the WAD file to the new directory, or by selecting the WAD and hitting ctrl+c then ctrl+v in the GZDOOM directory.
@@unknown4mat584 copy the .wad files into the GZDoom directly just like it's shown in the video. You don't need every doom .wad, but you need at least one. Slow down or pause the video if you have trouble following along :)
I can't get gzdoom to save any of my gameplay settings. I've tried everything I can find online. The folder says read-only. I've done everything from changing permissions, to changing folder ownership to command lines in cmd.exe and I still can't get gzdoom to save any gameplay settings. If anyone can help that would be greatly appreciated.
@@ketarel I apologize for not being clearer in my initial comment. The reason why I changed permissions and all that was because every time I tried to change the folder to read and write it wouldn't let me, hence the permission changes in an attempt to allow me to do so.
@@ketarel As far as I can tell, yes. I did get each file within the folder to be read-write now by changing them individually, just not the folder itself for some reason. It seems that the settings save when I save my game now. If I load that save it's fine and remembers my settings, but if I start a new game I have to set them for that file. Being new to gzdoom, I can only assume that's normal? If not it's better than before at least.
@@SupremeCowJumper Eh that sounds like a Windows problem, I'm not sure of the why or how of it. GZDoom saves are created as .zds files, usually you'll have a few autosaves: auto0.zds, auto1.zds, etc, then you'll have your manual saves, which get saved as save0.zds, save1.zds, and so on. So if the folder is read only, it may not allow GZDoom to create new save files.. but saving over an existing file might work, I'm not sure. You could try creating a new GZDoom directory and just copying your saves and preferences .ini files over, that might work.
Yes, GZDoom is portable, which means it doesn't install files anywhere else on your system. So to "reinstall" GZDoom, you just need to extract the .zip file to a new directory. Make sure to move your WADS out of your current GZDoom directory before deleting it though! Also, if you're not upgrading or changing versions of GZDoom, you can backup your .ini file as well. Check out the beginning of my "Updating GZDoom" video if any of what I just said was confusing :)

To each their own. If that style is not to your liking, you now know how to change it. One thing I think we can all agree on is the default triliner filtering is terrible and should not be enabled by anyone with eyeballs.
Oh, good question. I don't think there's an FOV option in the options menus anywhere.. but you can hit the tilde key (~) to bring up the console and type "fov" to set it. default is 90, but if you wanted to go up to say 120, you'd type "fov 120" in console.
Ah yep, some of these options are fairly resource intense. To gain back some FPS the first options you should turn down/off are Multisampling, then Postprocessing effects, then lower your Decal and Particle amount, then Dynamic Light Options, then turn off the Antisotropic filter and lower the High Quality Resize multiplier (or turn it off completely). If you're still getting unacceptably low FPS, basically just go through and turn all of the display options down as low as they go.
Water ripples is up to personal preference. I typically leave it off because it has some weird effects sometimes. Like if you're on a small raised platform, the ripples will extend outward into the air. The most important BD option is to set the engine to Singleplayer, and turning off rocket backblast, IMO.

Having an issue GZdoom it tripped my Bitdefender (anti-virus) saying Malware issues. How do I safely Remove GZdoom? And Safety remove ZDL??
Chill, Winston. Removing GZDoom is as easy as deleting the GZDoom folder. Same with ZDL, just delete the .exe and you're good. Though if you downloaded GZDoom from zdoom.org, and ZDL from one of the links on zdoom.org/wiki/ZDL (I recommend Lcferrum's version, as it's the newest), I'm certain that it's a false positive from bitdefender and the files are not viruses.

@@rico2smooth4u57 These videos seem to help people, and that makes me happy, so I'll probably keep at it until I stop playing DOOM myself. Which I can't see happening any time soon :P
GZDoom 4.3.2 is out now. Nothing's really changed as far as graphics settings are concerned though, so I don't feel a pressing need to update this guide. I'm considering doing a more advanced guide to setting up GZDoom though, using ZDL and reshare and some HD mods. So keep an eye out for that in the nearish future ;)
ketarel okay I subscribed and turned on notifications. I’ll be watching it as soon as it’s posted.

What do you do if you don’t have zmusic?
I'm not sure I understand the question, can you elaborate?
What the hell does "Portals with AO" do? And why should I turn it down or up?

I don't understand the apeal of the High quality resize mode. It just makes everything look muddy in my game.
Also, I have a much more recent video that goes a little more in depth: th-cam.com/video/8QpU1IYU2S8/w-d-xo.html
Hopefully I'll release another video soon, because the current version of GZDoom (4.7.1) has some significant changes. So yeah!
What settings I must turn on/off to make gzdoom not freeze at every difficult scene ?
Uh, yeah I'm not sure. That would depend on your computer specs and a bunch of other factors. I'd start by turning Multisampling to 0, lowering the number of particles and decals, lowering your High Quality Resize multiplier, changing Rendering Quality to "Speed", turning down Shadowmap quality, etc. Lowering your resolution might help, or changing to Vulkan renderer. Try enabling Janitor in Brutal Doom options too.

Thanks!
Btw my specs is 1660ti + Ryzen 5 2600
@@n4sty948 hmmm if you have 16gigs of ram then that should be enough to handle everything at max settings... set multisampling down to 0, and lower particles and decals to under 1000 each and see if that helps. if you're playing a custom wad, sometimes there's so many monsters that your system is going to lag no matter what you do (wads like foursite: www.doomworld.com/idgames/levels/doom2/Ports/d-f/foursite)
@@ketarel i figure out the reason why i catch freeze in every hard scene - all because i use DTHP Alterations addon for high textures, after i delete it game start feeling much smoother ;)

Gotta put a doom .wad into the gzdoom folder, or drag a .wad file onto the gzdoom.exe itself.

@@DaikaijuDiscussions drag the brutal doom .pk3 onto gzdoom.exe
i have doom on steam do i i just drag dz and brutal in the directory?
Depends on the version of doom you have on steam. For Ultimate Doom, look in:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Ultimate Doom\base
You're looking for DOOM.WAD, also DOOM2.WAD, TNT.WAD, PLUTONIA.WAD, or any other wads you might have depending on what DOOM package you have bought on steam. Just copy the WAD to your GZDoom directory, either by holding ctrl+dragging the WAD file to the new directory, or by selecting the WAD and hitting ctrl+c then ctrl+v in the GZDOOM directory.
@@ketarel so gz can be by itself and just copy and paste wad file? And what about brutal doom and the metalvol 5 ?

@@unknown4mat584 copy the .wad files into the GZDoom directly just like it's shown in the video. You don't need every doom .wad, but you need at least one. I can't get gzdoom to save any of my gameplay settings. I've tried everything I can find online. The folder says read-only. I've done everything from changing permissions, to changing folder ownership to command lines in cmd.exe and I still can't get gzdoom to save any gameplay settings. If anyone can help that would be greatly appreciated.
gotta change the folder to read and write. read-only means changes won't be made. make sure you're logged in as an admin in windows.
@@ketarel I apologize for not being clearer in my initial comment. The reason why I changed permissions and all that was because every time I tried to change the folder to read and write it wouldn't let me, hence the permission changes in an attempt to allow me to do so.
@@SupremeCowJumper So the folder is in read-only and you cant change it to read-write?
Is that enough to just delete all folder with gzdoom for reinstalling ?
Yes, GZDoom is portable, which means it doesn't install files anywhere else on your system. So to "reinstall" GZDoom, you just need to extract the .zip file to a new directory. Make sure to move your WADS out of your current GZDoom directory before deleting it though! Also, if you're not upgrading or changing versions of GZDoom, you can backup your .ini file as well. Check out the beginning of my "Updating GZDoom" video if any of what I just said was confusing :)

was looking pretty good til you got to the high quality resize mode, that smoothing of the chunky pixels just kills the look of doom completely.
To each their own. If that style is not to your liking, you now know how to change it. One thing I think we can all agree on is the default triliner filtering is terrible and should not be enabled by anyone with eyeballs.

So, you might be interested in some kind of guide on how to run Brutal Doom on a potato? Hmmm...
Mm-hmm
What is the fov command? I would love to increase it a bit
Oh, good question. I don't think there's an FOV option in the options menus anywhere.. but you can hit the tilde key (~) to bring up the console and type "fov" to set it. default is 90, but if you wanted to go up to say 120, you'd type "fov 120" in console.
ketarel thanks!
Opengl drive error
my game is extremely laggy now
Ah yep, some of these options are fairly resource intense.
There are some Brutal Doom settings you forgot. like water ripples.
Water ripples is up to personal preference. I typically leave it off because it has some weird effects sometimes. Like if you're on a small raised platform, the ripples will extend outward into the air. The most important BD option is to set the engine to Singleplayer, and turning off rocket backblast, IMO.
