People need to stop breeding them for these looks. The face being "squished" is normal, but not to this extent.
Their face isn't squished, it's dished and Arabians don't suffer because of it. Also, all responsible breeders breed based somewhat on looks. Tempermant and most importantly health are still factors but a horses conformation has much more to do with just an aesthetic preference. If a horse doesn't have good conformation and travel well, have a good mind and is in prime health with no genetic defects they shouldn't be bred period.
@@sausageswiper6657 Agreed, but the degree of dishing has gotten out of hand. You remember the scandal over El Rey Magnum? Yeah, guess who grew up and supposedly 'grew into his face'? He's already up on the stud market. I've seen a video of him as an adult. He's got color going for him and that's about it.
A dished face and small muzzle is normal for Arabians, but what is now winning in world show halter classes is so over done that they look grossly deformed ("seahorse heads") If it keeps up in this direction they will be looking into their own nostrils.
@Sausage Swiper - Professional breeders of all animals typically breed for looks- the more exaggerated, the better. They do this despite the health consequences.
Arabs have become deformed because of it. This type of breeding is why some breeds of dogs are illegal to breed in some parts of the world. I wouldn't be surprised if the Arab was on that list soon.

Oh trust me, most of the Equine world is not happy with the way the Egyptian faces have been going. Personally, I think some Polish or Crabbet needs introduced. Straighten out those faces a bit and bring a bit of substance back.

Arabs are very intelligent ,they love their people, they mature later than other breeds. They can recognize another Arab.They do spook more before you win their trust & bond , once you bond it’s for life & they are truly faithful.The only drawback is when they pass they take a big part of your heart.

This was the breed of horse I would sometimes as a little kid go horseback riding on. She was an absolutely beautiful dark black mare with a white star forehead marking and long white socks. Her name was Midnight and she was one of the sweetest and kindest horses you’d ever meet! Unfortunately she passed away a couple years ago due to a heart condition she had gotten. Me and my friend still miss her till this day. Rest in peace sweet girl. 😔

That's debunked, there's been no conclusive study that shows Arabians suffer and more respiratory issues than other breeds.
Do you know that Arabians are actually fantastic marathon horses compared to most other horses. So honestly I think if they had trouble breathing they wouldn't be highly recommended for marathons.

I think the modern Arabian horse (especially show quality horses) are very different from their ancestors. They look more like a cartoon horse than a real horse and because people think that looks cute they keep breeding this into the lines. Eventually these horses are going to be on the same level as pugs and boxers with their inability to breathe well. Cass Ole was an Arabian horse and starred in the movie The Black Stallion. The thing I love about that horse is you can tell he was an Arabian horse but he didn't have the exaggerated dish that these horses do
That would just be the Egyptian lines. The other strains (Polish, Crabbet, Shagya, Russian, etc) do not have this problem. (Or the attitude problem they're becoming known for...) If you'd like to see what this strain is *supposed* to look like, take a look at Aladdinn, Khemosabi, Fadjur, Bask++, and Huckleberry Bey.

@@renb6133 The thing is, humans meddling with nature is how we wound up with those horses in the first place. Horses started out looking similar to the current Prezwalskis. We bred from the ancient Tarpan to create what was needed for the environment. As we spread, so too did the strains we had created. All of the breeds we have now can be traced back to the Tarpan. Kind of hard to believe when you put a Shetland next to a Shire, but it's why those breeds can be crossed. (There's an absolutely adorable Clydesdale Shetland cross on Google if you want to see how it turns out. Though when creating such crosses, the mare should ALWAYS be the bigger breed. No exceptions. Goes for dogs too.) The only breed that's truly genetically different is the Akhal Teke, and we're not entirely sure why. They descended from the Turkmene (aka Turkoman), which is presumed to be from the Steppes variety of Tarpan and possibly Ferghana. Ironically, the Turkmene was also used to create the Thoroughbred (through the Byerley Turk), and the TB shows little genetic variance from other breeds. But if you've ever wondered why Akhal Tekes don't get crossed often, that's why. The resulting cross...doesn't look good and moves rather oddly.
That being said, there are times when humans take meddling in nature too far, i.e. cases like these halter Arabs. They have lost sight of purpose, and breed exclusively for looks. The same thing has happened with Pugs, GSDs, Chihuahuas, Persians, Scottish Folds, Munckins, scaleless rat snakes, and others. Much breeding of the modern Friesian has led to loss of bone density and changing of the movement. (Watch the movie Ladyhawke, and compare that horse's trot to the latest stallion inspections over in the Netherlands. Pay close attention to the gaskins on the back legs and the knees of the front. The drive and flash are VERY different between the two.) Regular feathering (not the extremes like we see on Vanners and Clydesdales, but just general feathering) has been linked to bone density (which is why many drafts and cobs have that large tuft above their heels), and Friesians have slowly been losing that. So while yes, meddling with nature can be a good thing (C-sections, anyone?), sometimes we just take it too far, and it's our job to not only see where that line is, but to fix the mistake.

I ride an arabian at my barn and he is my sweet baby. I love him to bits. However, I think he is one of the rare cases where he doesnt have major breathing issues because his face doesnt look like other arabians. Either way, gorgeous horses they are

@@cayj1869 nah, it’s because their balance is terrible. Animals weren’t born to be ridden and usually have certain troubles because of it. You see how in the video the guys are hunched forward, reins tight to their chest, and bouncing all over the saddle? I can almost guarantee you they are having trouble balancing on the horse, and slamming down on their backs like that over and over again can cause back and kidney problems, and in mares can be even more painful due to the horses ovaries. They aren’t being abusive because they’re being mean, but they are being abusive because they’re either uneducated or inexperienced. Some arabians may love to run, but they do not love injuring their spines. And yes I’ve ridden arabians before, mostly when I was younger. I had to stop because I grew and am now over the 25% weight limit for most smaller statured horses like arabians
@@issnake1109 when you are galloping you don't bounce. I find it easier to balance while galloping then any other gate. Are you an equestrian?
@@cayj1869 I am an equestrian, yes. From hunt seat and jumping to pole bending and a couple disciplines in between. I agree, a gallop is probably the easiest gait to sit, especially on a horse that rocks you into the saddle. I was saying that the guys in the video are in fact bouncing. If you have good balance it would be no issue to sit a gallop. But if you dont have the proper balance or experience of how to sit it properly, then bouncing is almost a certainty. If your back becomes too tight then you cant rock with the horse, and thats when the pulling on the reins for balance comes in, which can have the opposite affect and pull you out of the saddle further. No hate to you or any equestrian/rider that puts in the work to do their best for them and their horses. Just trying to explain why what the guys in the video are doing could be considered abuse

Arabians usually have dense, strong bone, and good hoof walls. They are especially noted for their endurance, and the superiority of the breed in Endurance riding competition demonstrates that well-bred Arabians are strong, sound horses with superior stamina.

These fuckers are the border collies of the horse world. They were bred for endurance, and they have practically boundless energy. Even a well-mannered one is going to be high-energy and a handful for anyone to work with. Every single one I've ever worked with has nearly brought me to tears of frustration, because unless you specifically want them for their go-go-go attitude, you will spend your ENTIRE ride stopping them from running.

My friend had one and for some reason other horses automatically follow their lead if they decide to bolt. They are mean as a snake too. Hers rammed her into a tree. You couldn’t give me one of those horses they are stubborn, head strong and difficult to work with.
My old quarter horse was half Arabian, best horse I ever owned and sweet tempered and good with kids too. She was originally a bucking bronco too lol.

Not all breeds originated from them but they were crossed into pretty much every warmblood breed, a lot of pony breeds and even some draft breeds

When I was a kid, I often visited Arabian horses in a nearby open stable. They looked nothing like the modern show type. It's genuinely scary how people keep on breeding for absurd beauty standards, even though we have so many negative examples of health issues.

never. I discovered shires and never going back. All around a better experience although you must be fit to get on them as they dont really come under 17hands
None of our Arabians had breathing problems. It depends on the line and what they were bred for. We used ours for cutting and working cattle. We were laughed at....at first....until the quarter horses couldn't keep up with ours. Loved my babies 💖💖

That is the temperament that comes to mind when I think of Arabians. Difficult. Doesn't make them bad but I feel like they need someone who is very experienced or persistent to train them. Very much a hot blood horse.

I had several Arabian horses. They are quite the athlete. I used to win jumping classes at shows even, against the big thoroughbreds. My little Arab gray, we used to call her bionic legs. She didn’t care how big the other horse were. She wanted to show them how jumping was done and won.

Hey, this is actually just a myth! They have no breathing issues at all. You can find very dishy faced Arabs winning Endurance races of 25 miles or more. The breed absolutely dominates the sport!

Not really. Horses originated in North America and crossed the ice bridge before it was destroyed. Ice Age megafauna like the lions and dire wolves and short faced bear killed off NA's horses, while Eurasia had no predators large enough to compete. Horses first made their home across the steppes of Siberia/ Mongolia, and kept moving west from there. Arabians are a descendent of those horses, and specialized for the desert, just like horses tamed by the Hittites and later on Europeans are specialized to those regions.
This is backed up by the evolution of camels. They too are originally NA from the ice age, died out from the predators, but some crossed and became the camels of today. The ones that stayed migrated south and became llamas, vicuñas, alpaca and so on.

Over the course of history, Arabian Horses have reached every corner of the world. Due to their beauty and versatility, they have become one of the most popular horse breeds on the planet. Arabians have even made it into Hollywood and were featured in famous movies such as The Black Stallion.
Arabian Horses are typically lightweight, with lean muscles and tendons like steel made for endurance. They are relatively small horses, standing only 14.1 to 15.1 hands. Today, the breed is most often used as a show, sport, and pleasure riding horse.
The available archeological evidence suggests that the history of Arabian Horses dates back to at least 4,500 years ago. While the breed’s exact origins are obscure, modern Arabians are thought to be the descendants of the ancient “Proto-Arabian”.
For thousands of years, Arabians lived among the desert tribes of the Arabia Peninsula. The tribe that originally developed the Arabian Horse breed was the Beduins. They meticulously bred the best horses and treated them as part of their families.
Traditionally, the Beduins believed that the Arabian Horse was brought to them by Allah himself. According to this origin story, Allah created the horse from the south wind, exclaiming:
“I create thee, Oh Arabian. To thy forelock, I bind Victory in battle. On thy back, I set a rich spoil and a Treasure in thy loins. I establish thee as one of the Glories of the Earth… I give thee flight without wings.” (Source: Natural Horse Planet)
The Beduin people maintained a rigorous breeding program to ensure their horses were of the purest breeding. They selectively bred for alertness, speed, and stamina, qualities that were essential in raiding and war. The Beduins regarded Arabians so highly that they even shared their tents with their horses.

Horses resembling the typical Arabian appear on numerous inscriptions and rock paintings of the Arabian Peninsula from 3,500 years ago. They were also featured in the artwork of Ancient Egypt dating back to the 16th century BC.
These and other pieces of evidence prove that Arabian Horses have been the loyal partners of humans for thousands of years. While the breed has changed little in appearance and temperament over its history, Arabian Horses didn’t remain 100% pure.
According to a 2010 study by Iwona Głażewska, the purity of the modern Arabian can only be traced back 200 years. The study suggests that the Arabian Horse, as we know it today, is the result of widespread crossbreeding between various breeds rather than pure bloodlines.

The animal version of a ballerina
I got to have 2 for about 2 years and it was heaven for me. But I got pregnant with my youngest and was high risk and had to be bed ridden when I was 3 months pregnant until I gave birth to my beautiful healthy boy. It was either my Son or my sweet beautiful girls. They got a wonderful home though. I have missed them for 22 years but I know they are still doing well.
I had a part bred Arab he was crossed with a hanovarian x tb mare and arab stallion. He was so fast and would gallop for miles he had so much stamina and was easily faster than my friend's thoroughbred racehorse. He was eligible for arab racing but i made him be a dressage horse instead! He was also a brilliant jumper. One of the best horses ive ever ridden. He was so responsive.
Responsive as hell!! With lose rein, lead. Put them in unskilled hands & they fight like most of the commenters suggest that theirs did.

Not so fun fact: They can't breathe because of the overbreeding, and the ones that are in the video specially are designed for beauty but NEVER for sprint of any of those that u mentioned. They can only breed though their nose and their nostrils are really squished so they can't breathe and that's really sad. This should be stoped, a Arabian was never supposed to look like that and people just want to ruin it's beautiful speed and agility

I was gonna flip like they roll their heads that you forgot my favorite two things about Arabians, their attitude and intelligence but you put intelligence in at the end, they're like cat horses they must be appeased and it makes them even better, make them mad and they'll find cheeky little ways to get back at you without breaking any rules or any toes (at least most of them won't break your toes) that's a horse that knows how you work and can almost think on your level and they're AWESOME

Every Arabian I have met was an asshole, whether the owners were professionals or not. When I was young my own miniature donkey sold for more than an Arabian at an auction.
Yes they do get that reputation the Arabian they really can be highly strung my old Arabian would Only ever let me handle him any one else that come into his paddock would get chased out lol

Arabians tend to be stubborn and hard to trust but once you take the time for them to trust you they are sweet hearts I own a Arabian cross, she’s a rescue so she’s pretty skittish

They were probably mistreated or not trained properly. Makes any horse "an asshole" if you can when call an animal that without projecting human traits onto them.
That is why I own this breed and compete nationally

I understand their history, intelligence, stamina, and spirit but I don't like their muzzles. They look like seahorses.

The rest of the horse, so beautiful, but the severely dented face is ☠️ can't help it. There are prettier arabians out there, with only a tiny dent. Generally speaking, I love horses, but this is ew to me. Don't like pugs either, for the same reason.

For those who are saying Arabian horse can't breath properly because of its concaved face .. no they breath properly but, there are an American company specializing in horse breeding managed to crossbred a horse that appears as if it appeared from one of the famous cartoon films.
The "strange" horse appears with a "concave" face, nostrils and very large eyes, as if they had just come out of "cartoon movies".
The company called the "exotic horse" the "Re Magnum"-copied from an article- , Horses of this strain have difficulty breathing.
