I got the PS1 version first, then bought the Sega CD one, and I eventually got the PSP. I still like the PS1 version the best so far! PSP is pretty, but feels too clean lol
I played them all when they first came out. Can’t get back those feelings, seriously. No such thing as nostalgia, with games. You got it once, and that’s it. Unless you’ve lost your memories playing them, or something.
For me personally, mine might would be: Xenogears Grandia Final Fantasy IX Suikoden 2 Legend of Dragoon I never really got into Final FantasyVII as I was only 12 or so years of age when it came out and didn't even play RPG yet... my first RPG that I actually asked for was Xenogears!! But I enjoy quite a few nowadays like: Jade cocoon Legend of Lagaia Breath of Fire Lunar And some others not on PlayStation or course..

Oh snap! I love this list, dude! I've not played any Persona game for long, but I'm thinking real hard about playing Persona 5! I'm excited to give Suikoden 2 another playthrough next year with the HD release!
It's definitely not a classic game but if you're into PS1 retro RPGs I recommend trying guardians crusade it's a quirky RPG that I had back when it came out I had a lot of fun with it even though it wasn't a blockbuster game I haven't seen very many people mention it over the years
:) It is a good JRPG list, with only one single thing that could be adjusted if you do not mind constructive criticism. I'm a Final Fantasy fan myself, but I personally think it's unfair competition to have two titles in the list. Have a spot for the title you feel like you are synonymous with, and reserve the other for another title from outside the FF series. That way there's more variety in the list! unless expanding your JRPG catalog on the PS1 is still pending; that's another story.
Oh, for sure! I totally understand this! If you did a list of best RPGs for just about any system you could almost load it with FF lol as a viewer, I don't like seeing multiple games from the same series in the list either. I've never finished either of them! I played CC extensively when I was younger. Dq7 I've not played too much of. It's intimidating because of the incredible amount of hours it takes!
Dude- I've owned Legacy of Legaia for SO long, and I have never even put it in the system. I've heard over and over that it's amazing, though! Thanks for watching and thanks for sharing!!
The RPG with the best writing, story and battle system imo is Xenogears. Don´t know why its missing on this list. Lunar Silver Star Story is a nice RPG, but its too easy and too short. Wild Arms is also missing. Better make a Top 10 List. Oh, and Legend of Mana was also pretty lit.
Legend of mana, legend of legaia, Digimon adventure, Harvest moon back to nature, final fantasy 9,final fantasy 8,, terlalu banyak yang aku suka semuanya game RPG ps 1 terbaik 🥲
I'll be honest- I've never played more than an hour or so of it. I've started to several times, but people keep telling me Disc 1 is the best thing since sliced bread and then Disc 2 just fizzles out :( It's certainly a deterrent!
Phew. That's high praise for SO2! I can't wait to get the remake! I've been trying to be more discerning with game purchases, but that's one I definitely want!
IMO in list like these you should exclude Square Soft (and maybe Enix, but that’s more debatable) titles. Otherwise the list will be over saturated with Square Soft titles and we already know those games are exemplary entries within the PS1’s libraries. That way other titles that don’t get as much attention can be focused on. Granted a top five would still be the same handful of games regardless, but once you get to top ten to top twenty. So for me the top five (in no particular order) would be: Lunar SSSC/EBC (they are similar enough to be grouped together imo) Vanguard Bandits Suikoden I & II Breath of Fire III & IV Then it’d be a toss up between: Legend of Dragoon Grandia Vandal Hearts Wild ARMs Legend of Legaia Tales Mega Man Legends Digimon World (I know it’s a hot mess, but I love it and I think it has aged better than a lot of other “better” games have). If we include Enix these would be in the mix: Dragon Warrior VII Star Ocean Valkyrie Profile If Square was in it the list would be filled with Final Fantasy, Tactics Ogre, Chrono Cross, Parasite Eve, Vagrant Story, SaGa, Mana, Threads of Fate, Xenogears, Front Mission, Chocobo’s Dungeon, Racing Lagoon. We already know those games are amazing, even the worst titles from that list are still great when compared to the rest of the PS1’s library. Square (and Enix as well, Enix just wasn’t as prolific) was just so dominant in the genre during the fifth (and sixth) generation.
Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts and such a well-considered list! I totally get your point about Square Soft dominating discussions about PS1 RPGs-it’s hard not to include them since they were such a powerhouse at the time. But you're right, focusing on lesser-known gems like Lunar, Vanguard Bandits, and Suikoden definitely gives some love to titles that often fly under the radar. I really appreciate the balance you’ve struck here! And I have to agree with you about Digimon World-it may be a bit messy, but it’s got a charm that has stood the test of time. Thanks again for your insight! Also, great list!
@@pixelbrolee Thanks, I really like looking at the SNES to PS2 era of video games for RPGs as that is when (I think at least) video games started shifting from being thought of as something akin to toys to an actual and valid form of artistic expression. Also, sorry if my comment came off as antagonistic, wasn’t my intent my writing style comes off that way at least that’s what I’ve been told 😜. As my top picks were nearly identical to yours I obviously agree with your choices and overall opinion 😅. And ya, I agree, that not including Square in such lists is hard as their titles are so strong. Like I think FFT is a top contender for the best game, not only in the PS1’s library, but out of the fifth generation of video games as a whole. It just has a lot going for it compared to its contemporaries. Its visual aesthetics and audio are magnificent and have aged extremely well. It tells an incredibly moving, intricate, and beautiful story with amazing characters that have excellent development and believable motivations. The game has both a set of deep and wide mechanics that are very well executed. The mechanics also not only complement the themes of the narrative but also are used to expand and create instances of symbolism within the story (which is what makes video games such a unique medium of art compared to something like cinema). I would called Final Fantasy Tactics a Masterpiece (and I do not give many games/films/novels that distinction). I would be very surprised that if in forty or fifty years Final Fantasy Tactics is not being analyzed in academia much like films such as The Godfather, Battleship Potemkin, 2001 A Space Odyssey, or Gone with the Wind are currently done so in film studies today. It’s hard not to include a title like that in a best of list. Everyone already knows that is going to be a top pick for like 80-90% of people that have played it. It just like to see a content creator’s individual opinions and preferences in games and when Square Soft titles are including (and them being so dominant in the fifth and sixth gens) that kind of gets muddled. Anyway great list and I subscribed (hopefully YT will actually tell me when you post, not sure why they stopped that as a thing but they did).

You know, I honesty haven't played much of Eternal Blue. I hear it's great, but I've not played more than an hour or so of it. I need to get into it! Thanks for commenting!
I liked Dragoon, but it’s easy combat, underutilized mechanics (you don’t need to max any additions to succeed), pretty basic plot, and poor dialogue made it go from a game I could adore to just an O.K. experience

I played them all when they first came out. Can’t get back those feelings, seriously. No such thing as nostalgia, with games. You got it once, and that’s it. Unless you’ve lost your memories playing them, or something.
That's sort of depressing, but honestly on point lol thanks for taking time to share and watch!!!
Almost nailed it! I just think Final Fantasy 6 is better than 7. And I've never played tactics.
I highly recommend tactics! I also understand the love for FF6! It is very good!
For me personally, mine might would be:
Xenogears
Grandia
Final Fantasy IX
Suikoden 2
Legend of Dragoon
I never really got into Final FantasyVII as I was only 12 or so years of age when it came out and didn't even play RPG yet... my first RPG that I actually asked for was Xenogears!!
But I enjoy quite a few nowadays like:
Jade cocoon
Legend of Lagaia
Breath of Fire
Lunar
And some others not on PlayStation or course..
Whoa! Xeno is a HEAVY game to start with! That's awesome!!
Great list! not exactly my list but not enough for me to be like your wrong! 😮
Ayy! Thanks so much for watching and commenting! That's very kind of you :)
In no order, Legend of Dragoon, Xenogears, FF9, Chrono Cross, Lunar 2 Eternal Blue.
Funny enough, I've not beaten any of those! I've played them all but never finished them :( I'm screenshotting this to add to my list
RPG games with the best story lines in my opinion:
1.suikoden 2
2.chrono cross
3.ff7
4.ff8
5.ff9
6.chrono trigger
7.persona 3
8.persona 4
9.suikoden 5
10. Xenogears
Oh snap! I love this list, dude! I've not played any Persona game for long, but I'm thinking real hard about playing Persona 5!
I'm excited to give Suikoden 2 another playthrough next year with the HD release!
@@pixelbrolee precisely dude...I will be waiting for suikoden remaster also...Yoshitaka Murayama, Junko Kawano were amazing writers...👍👍👍💯💯💯
Star Ocean second story I would put in place of tactics
Amazing game It's sad that all of the following star ocean games were not that good
Phewwwww. I can respect some Star Ocean, but not over tactics!!! Nice choice, though, for real!
Have you played through second story ?
It's definitely not a classic game but if you're into PS1 retro RPGs I recommend trying guardians crusade it's a quirky RPG that I had back when it came out I had a lot of fun with it even though it wasn't a blockbuster game I haven't seen very many people mention it over the years
There's a video documentary about it called the best RPG you've never heard of
:) It is a good JRPG list, with only one single thing that could be adjusted if you do not mind constructive criticism.
Thanks so much for watching and commenting! I appreciate your time and consideration
FF7 is #1 and I got to add Star Ocean to my list
Absolutely! It's a good call!
My favorite PS1 JRPG is either Chrono Cross or Dragon Quest VII
I've never finished either of them! I played CC extensively when I was younger. Dq7 I've not played too much of. It's intimidating because of the incredible amount of hours it takes!
Of all the scenes to show to represent FFVII, you picked an awkward flashback with no main characters from 2/3 the way through the game 🤔
Lol fair!
FF7 is soooo gooood, solid list
Thank you!
where's xenogears?
I've never finished it! I'd wager it was number 6 though :3
The only 2 games I would change is LoD to BoF3 and FF7 to FF9
BoF3 is BEEEEAUTIFUL! I NEED to play FF9 still! Great responses! And totally fair!
I’d put Lunar 2: Eternal Blue in there instead of Silver Star. Also, Legend of Legaia needs to be in there.
Dude- I've owned Legacy of Legaia for SO long, and I have never even put it in the system. I've heard over and over that it's amazing, though! Thanks for watching and thanks for sharing!!
Lunar 2 deserves a spot for sure
@@pixelbroleeDid you play it?
I have not :(!@@SuryaBudimansyah
Legaia is great but not top 5 great. It's a very standard straight forward rpg.
Top8 with Chrono Cross, Legend of Legaia and Parasite Eve
A man of culture ♡
The RPG with the best writing, story and battle system imo is Xenogears. Don´t know why its missing on this list. Lunar Silver Star Story is a nice RPG, but its too easy and too short. Wild Arms is also missing. Better make a Top 10 List. Oh, and Legend of Mana was also pretty lit.
I actually have a top 10 and Xenogears is on it! Check out the full video for this! th-cam.com/video/JtfmlShHTh0/w-d-xo.html
Also, thanks for taking time to watch and comment!
Legend of mana, legend of legaia, Digimon adventure, Harvest moon back to nature, final fantasy 9,final fantasy 8,, terlalu banyak yang aku suka semuanya game RPG ps 1 terbaik 🥲
Good Choices! I've never heard of that last one!
Legend of dragoon has no business on this list. Where is Xenogears
I'll be honest- I've never played more than an hour or so of it. I've started to several times, but people keep telling me Disc 1 is the best thing since sliced bread and then Disc 2 just fizzles out :( It's certainly a deterrent!
@@pixelbroleedisc 2 doesn't fizzle out at all. Story goes nuts on disc 2.
Great picks! However, I think _Star Ocean: The Second Story_ is objectively better than all of these (but they’re all great games.)
Phew. That's high praise for SO2! I can't wait to get the remake! I've been trying to be more discerning with game purchases, but that's one I definitely want!
Tactics and 7 for sure. I would swap out suikoden for chrono cross
Ya know- I think that's a fair point. Tactics is just a *chefskiss* for me.
So for me the top five (in no particular order) would be:
Lunar SSSC/EBC (they are similar enough to be grouped together imo)
Vanguard Bandits
Suikoden I & II
Breath of Fire III & IV
Then it’d be a toss up between:
Legend of Dragoon
Grandia
Vandal Hearts
Wild ARMs
Legend of Legaia
Tales
Mega Man Legends
Digimon World (I know it’s a hot mess, but I love it and I think it has aged better than a lot of other “better” games have).
If we include Enix these would be in the mix:
Dragon Warrior VII
Star Ocean
Valkyrie Profile
If Square was in it the list would be filled with Final Fantasy, Tactics Ogre, Chrono Cross, Parasite Eve, Vagrant Story, SaGa, Mana, Threads of Fate, Xenogears, Front Mission, Chocobo’s Dungeon, Racing Lagoon.
@@pixelbrolee
Thanks, I really like looking at the SNES to PS2 era of video games for RPGs as that is when (I think at least) video games started shifting from being thought of as something akin to toys to an actual and valid form of artistic expression.
Some are good especialy FFT from what I played on the ps1 when they game out but I still prefer FF7, breath of fire, Alundra, symphony of the night? well rpg term has been loose for a while.
Truth. Some only associate RPGs with Turn-Based, but that's simply not the case. The lines are so blended anymore!
Take tactics off and put grandia or FF 9
Take tactics off?! Bold move! lol Grandia and FF9 are great though!
people never remember breath of fire iv and that makes me really sad. it's probably the best looking game in the system as a whole. shame capcom wants to bury breath of fire 6 palms deep in the dirt.
I 100% agree that BoF4 is PROBABLY the best looking game on the system. It's absolutely gorgeous!
Great but replace FFT since you already have a FF game, with Breath of fire IV or Xenogears and your good.
Those are certainly fair assertions. Xenogears is probably the number 1 people mention.
they should remake the legend of dragoon 😢❤
I agree! A rerelease is a good step, but a remake would be IDEAL. Fix some of those battle lengths lol
Tactics Ogre
Jade Cocoon
Grandia
Star Ocean The Second Story
Xenogears
Chrono Cross
Vandal Hearts
Langrisser IV
Brigandine Grand Edition
Gah! This is a list of excellence. Thank you so much for sharing!!!
Ummm, where is my goat xenogears??
I have YET to finish that game! I need to get on it. I've heard so many people encourage me to play it! Thanks for commenting!
FFT doesn't get enough. good pick
Ayyyy! Thanks so much! I agree!
Replace Dragoon with Xenogears and we're golden.
I can appreciate that! Thanks for taking time to comment!
Final Fantasy IX is the best one in my opinion
I need to play more of it!!! I never beat it :O
Take lunar out for xenogears, I personally would take suikoden out for legend of legaia and lastly star ocean for FF tactics it was the GBA version I liked
Man I feel like that's some hot takes, but I'M HERE FOR IT! I love to hear from people with differing opinions! Xenogears is a super popular response on here, but switching out Suikoden for Legaia
xenogears?
I've actually not played it! I hear wonderful things about every bit of the first disc. I hear the 2nd one is pretty rough :(
you’re missing Chrono Cross
dope 5 tho
I need to get that remaster! I hear they fixed a lot of the other issues that it had, so it's definitely on my list to play! Thanks for commenting!
Wild Arms 2 has to be #6
I... have never played wild arms 2 :(! Shame on me!!!
Sad to see Grandia didnt make it
Grandia is an amazing game! There's just sooooo many great RPGs on the PS1!
I was about to sweat if breath of fire IV was on that top 5 list 😌 , I've played it 2 rounds but don't like the downgrade visuals .
Lol No worries! I got your back :) I think it's a lovely game, but it certainly is softer with the visuals, and I prefer the crisp pixels of III
No olvidar que este top es subjetivo. No sé lo tomen personal.
Gracias por tus comentarios, estoy de acuerdo!
I would have put Lunar Etenal Blue Complete instead
Man. Honestly I've never even played more than an hour or so of eb!
@pixelbrolee I have both, but I guess that because I played Eternal Blue first that one is my favorite.
Lunar 2 eternal blue complete should be the #1
You know, I honesty haven't played much of Eternal Blue. I hear it's great, but I've not played more than an hour or so of it. I need to get into it! Thanks for commenting!
I liked Dragoon, but it’s easy combat, underutilized mechanics (you don’t need to max any additions to succeed), pretty basic plot, and poor dialogue made it go from a game I could adore to just an O.K. experience
I think that's a fair point, dude!
You just picked 4 that almost nobody would know and FF7. Chrono Cross, Legend of Mana, Vagrant Story, heck, FF8 was great too. Things don't have to be underrated to be good.
(And if it's about top 5 underrated RPGs, FF7 surely isn't!)
I disagree, but I appreciate your comment! Gives me something to think about! Thanks for watching and taking time to comment!
Legend of Dragoon needs to be replaced with Chrono Cross, then the list will be complete.
I'll accept that :) thanks for watching and commenting, dude!
Where is Breath of Fire 4
Good question! Gah! I still need to play it D:!
I know everyone goes crazy over Final Fantasy 7, but 8 and 9 are better.
Whoooooa. I've heard 9 pretty consistently, but 8? I enjoyed 8, don't get me wrong, but I don't think it was better than 7 :O Thanks for sharing your thoughts, though!
@@pixelbrolee 8 is actually my favorite of the PS1 Final Fantasy games. I like the card game. I like that you can break the junction system so badly you can one shot bosses. And I think it has the best and least complicated story of the three.
@@theangriestgamer Hrm. I see your points! That card game is LEGIT too.
The frist Vandals Hearts is way better then FF tactics
Whoa! Bold claim! I like it!
Where is legend of legaia or xenogears
I get the Xenogears question often! I've never finished it! Same with Legaia :O I heard they're great, though!
Legend of Dragoon, Lunar, Suikoden II, Legend of Legaia and Final Fantasy 9. FF7 is highly overrated.
Solid picks! It's difficult to contend with any of those!
TACTICS HAD TO BE THERE OFCOURSE
You know it bb!!!!
Legend of dragoon as the first game on the screen...Automatic Subscription
MMMM yesssssssssss. I see you too have great taste in video games ;)
to many good titles to close it in 5 I love Breath of fire IV and 3 Vandal hearts I have most of rgps on ps1 just to many titles Chrono Cross, saga frontier,Xenogears,Vargant story.
Amen!!!
