Bush would have made a better VP than president. A president should have the backbone to make their own decisions and stand behind them or step* down where as Bush left the hard decisions in the hands of people less honorable than himself. I don't think he is a bad guy but he was a poor president.
In the years since leaving office, Bush has proved his humanity by maintaining close friendships with the Clintons, the Obamas and many more on the opposite side of the political spectrum. everyone outside of the more progressive types was against gay marriage. The patriot act was... Complicated. It was not an act of corruption seeking to enrich themselves or undermine the American people. It's very easy to judge from 2024 how reckless some of the decisions were in 2001. But it was a scary time. I'd dare say most would have supported the Patriot Act even if it had been fully disclosed
Not even close to that, I am afraid. There is a reason why the US does not want to ratify the "The Hague Treaty Against Crimes of War". The US, Russia, and Israel are the only 1st. world countries that refuse to ratify the treaty (My mom used to say "Show me who your friends are, and I will tell you who you are". How does it feel to be in the same club as Russia?). Instead, Bush Jr. signed the American Servicemembers Protection Act of 2002. Essentially giving the US military the permission to commit crimes of war (and yes, there were plenty) without having to fear prosecution.

I agree. For all his faults and bad decisions, this was one of the times he stood up and showed how a president should act. It is difficult to imagine the nation going back to the way things ought to be.
I was completely against most of Bush's policy and may never forgive his administration for Iraq. But even though partisanship was quite virulent in this period, it was nothing like the destructive forces US democracy faces today. How low things have sunk that this is the case.
Unfortunately you can't change others. But you can act like this yourself. I've been doing politics for over ten years now and the least I can tell you is that there is still a _significant_ number of people, both inside the parliaments of the world and outside on the streets, who have great respect for this. And they will pay it back in their own ways. Not everyone, of course, especially not today. But being a class act will never not resonate with people. You know that in 2000 Al Gore was called president elect by the media (as Biden is today) and that after multiple recounts, the results were flipped and Bush won (as Trump may do now). Bush didn't accept the result that appeared incorrect. His legal team called for recounts, as Trump's team is doing right now. When there have been 100+ affidavits submitted claiming they witnessed both intentional fraud and negligence, videos of poll watchers being denied entry(illegal) and the Supreme Court of a State overruling the legislature (against the constitution) then there is obvious cause for investigation. . I think he was forced into becoming a president because he was part of the Bush family and that's it. He was a talking head for the more conservative parts of the Republican Party and when those policies were a failure Bush got the blame instead of them.

I agree. For all his faults and bad decisions, this was one of the times he stood up and showed how a president should act. In addition, kudos to both Senator John McCain and then Governor (now senator) Mitt Romney for how they handled defeat in an honorable fashion. It is difficult to imagine the nation going back to the way things ought to be.
Totally agree, what a leader
And if it inspires some of them to follow your example, you've already made the world a better place and established your own tiny, little legacy. More to come, or maybe not, doesn't matter. At that point it was already worth it.

I remember how I felt when he was re-elected and how it wasn't right after all that had gone on. Easier times.
It says a lot about people indeed.
If people are so certain nothing went wrong with the mail-in ballots then what do people have to lose?
People have very poor memory it seems.

One of the greatest days in American history was when Barack Obama was elected President. A beautiful time.
This is how politicians should act, it’s just respectful. We need more of this.
I hadn't thought of it like that. But there was always kinda unspoken rules about how you spoke towards your peers in politics. But Trump's not a politician. He's a business man,
With all due respect, we didn’t elect a preacher. Meaning we shouldn’t elect someone because of how they talk.
HeyItzKillerMC we don’t give a fuck about how they talk. We care about how have respect for those around them.
Owen Dalton Respect is given when respect is due. They don’t respect an ounce of him so why is he going to respect them?
@@HeyItzKillerMC Actually we should. The president will talk to world leaders as well as use his bully pulpit to unite and bring the people to understanding of various topics. We should elect a leader who is sharp, can get things done, and can communicate well, imho. Nothing about being a horrible communicator makes someone more effective at action.
I was not a fan of Bush in the slightest but I respect this respectful handover.
Obama is the cause of all of Americas problems today.. His election was a fluke and the US was not prepared to handle a multi ethnic president for 8 years.. Trump would have never come had someone more true to America been President from 2009-17
@@aditya6201 ok dipshit
@@aditya6201 "the US was not prepared to handle a multi ethnic president for 8 years". Holy shit according to you America is fragile as fuck.
If the skin colour of the president actually matters, the problem isn't the choice of President, it's with stupid racists like you.
Can't believe a respectful handover isn't considered a given anymore.
@@aditya6201 You're kidding right? Firstly, what the hell has ethnicity got to do with it? Let's say you are right, (which you aren't but let's pretend,) then is that Obama's fault or a prejudiced subsection of American society? Second;
1. The USA achieved a record 90 straight months of economic expansion under Obama.
2. The USA benefited from the longest period of private sector job creation in their country's history.
3. Unemployment dropped from a GFC induced 10.1% in October of 2009 to 4.8% by the start of 2017.
4. Trump's beloved stock market set record highs throughout the Obama tenure.
5. The Federal budget deficit was reduced by 2/3rds.
I'm saying this as someone who thought Obama was too much of an international interventionist as most American Presidents have been.
