    At 5:45 when your left hand landed on that B natural, can’t you kind of get away with that because the sopranos are two octaves above hitting the Bb so it wouldn’t really clash as much right?

    • @SeanWilsonPiano
      @SeanWilsonPiano  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Good question, but no, it's not a matter of distance but of quality. Because actually there are 2 notes both the B and the G# at 5:45, that are clashing with the intended minor third, G and Bb of the vocals at that part

      This, in essence is the argument Richard Smallwood was making, that he wants a "dominant chord" on the word "hills" whereas a jazz musicians might say you could switch it since the diminished chord has a similar function. In gospel the improv has to support the choir

      @@SeanWilsonPiano what if you hit B-G-Bb in the left hand with proper harmony in the right? Could you get away with that? As you can see I like to try crazy things but still play their harmony in the right hand. Lol

      @@bobbyallen7400 it's that time of year.. I'm trying to get away with these same questions! 😄 I think it's the push/pull between what was written by the composer, versus what our musical creativity draws us to play on the keys. It's like a struggle within--of discipline + trusting the marriage between your 'straight' chords and the vocals...especially when you've grown up playing in church!

    Absolutely correct....I was supposed to play this song for a studio session last year and I broke all the rules skipping over these details in chord qualities when trying to learn the song fast. Thanks for bringing this to our attention.

    Wow are so right! It not about always what the musicians are featuring but the choirs. Back in the days of Mass or Combined choirs, it was call musicians accompaniment. The choirs told the story, the musicians cross the (T) dot the (I)

    Singers usually know the 3-part harmony for major and minor chords. I help the choir or praise team with harmony when they don’t match the chord tones and since they’re not used to hearing harmonies like augmented, fourths, diminished, or even minor seconds.
    And you’re right. They say, “Someone’s off,” but the musicians can throw the harmonies off with the wrong chords.

  • @fredbutler9629

    Good job my brother...you are so right. In this day and time WE as musicians are always trying to play the phattest chords or seeing what fancy chord WE add..but it's not all about the phattest nor fancy chords...sometimes a simple triad gets the job done. And plus it depends on where (meaning the church) a musician is, phat/fancy chords are almost an evil...lol

  • @AMAZING_INSIGHTS776

    Ive always learned songs by learning the vocal parts. I know musicians that learn the chords instead. Since I first started playing I always learned the choral parts first. It tells you what you can and cannot do. Then there are those directors that can’t hear the parts correctly and teach the choir the wrong parts which causes the musicians and vocals to clash.
    When you try and correct them they get mad and double down on being wrong. Then the next rehearsal after they’ve listened and learned the correct parts then they come in saying that you are playing it wrong when you are now playing it the last way they taught it. Choir is confused and musicians are confused. Instead of the director saying “My bad, some of the parts I taught last week were wrong.” They double down.

    @ 7:20 can you away with playing E Tritone in left hand and that C minor in the right making it kind of a sharp 9 dominant chord?

    • @SeanWilsonPiano
      @SeanWilsonPiano  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You're still thinking like a jazz musician doc lol... the idea is that if the choir intended a minor chord there, I have to retain that minor and not change it to a dominant, sharp 9. But like i mentioned in the video, its not "wrong" per se, and we all do it, but changing the quality always runs the risk of throwing off the vocals and adding dissonance that may not be intended by the creator

  • @pete3816

    So, to summarise, listen properly to the singers and just play the right notes and stop approximating coz you can’t be bothered to learn the actual song.

  • @girlmusician24

    It wouldn’t be accurate to the sheet music if you weren’t playing it as composed.
