    The problem, Paul, is that everything you touch sounds great! You should really be getting a commission from these companies. So far, in trying to follow in your footsteps, I bought a Seymour Duncan Quarter Pounder and a Bare Knuckle Stormy Monday for my Tele, a Tone City Sweet Cream and a NU-X Steel Singer. I love them all, but none of them make me sound anything like you. I guess my next purchase will the Page, and then saving up for a Cornell Romany 12. Thanks for the inspiration and for helping me spend my money. My wife is not quite so thankful. ;-)

    One thing I deeply appreciate about these vids is you keep your guitars in tune. As a result, it highlights how tasty your playing is. I have a variety of pedals but always come back to the original tone of the amp/guitar combo itself plugged straight in.
    I fix/mod tube amps as a hobby and my favorite tone of the week is coming from a little Akai M8 tube amp I modded from a single-ended to a double-ended configuration with an EF86 driving two EL84s. My non-scientific estimate of power output is maybe 7-8 watts. I put a reverb pedal in front and I am in tonal heaven.

    I think the absolutely first thing you HAVE to spend money on, is an AMP you really like/love!
    Overdriven Tone through a harsh amp, sounds harsh, no matter how good the pedal is!
    I have two amps that pretty much light my fire…5e3 Clone and a Dr Z Z28. The Dr Z actually is all I need for amp tones; however, it handles overdrive and can’t really get to super crunchy without them. For me it really is a question of subtle flavor?
    Broadcaster was the winner for me. Before I spend anymore, I’m cycling through what I have on hand to see what is “good enough”.
    Great fun watching your posts!

    • @paulstaffordcook8799
      @paulstaffordcook8799  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks druwk, I think you’ve hit the nail on the head. Yeah, a great amp and then everything after that is really just subtle differences in flavours. And since pedals are such a rabbit hole it can get expensive quite quickly. Actually, since filming this vid I’ve just completed a bit of a “cull” on my pedals - got rid of about 6. And I’ve kept the affordable Sweet Cream and Kafir Lime😊

    Hi Paul, I think that in order to see the difference you truly have to push the pedals to listen to the harrmonics generated by the circuit. I believe that you used all these pedals pretty much as a boost and that's why the results were similar. Truly love your playing, feel and phrases by the way. You are very inspiring!

    Ive had the same opinion on overdrive pedals for many years now and its this.
    You can pay hundreds of pounds or £30 and the overdrive pedals you buy will sound different but similar and its up to you which you prefer but the only reason some pedals are several hundreds of pounds is that they are hand made in the west and labour costs are more expensive in the west and there is nothing wrong with mass produced pedals made in the far east, in many instances they can be better because big companies have more time and money to invest in product development and computer/machine built pedals are always going to be a fraction of the cost of hand built pedals.

    Hello kid, another fine video as always,the only pedals I use nowadays is to drive the car, now onto today's story. A young Irish girl lives in a high rise building in Dublin and one Friday night she's having a shower, she looks down and thinks to herself she needs a trim down below, looks in the cabinet for some hair removal cream but there is none, so she has the brainwave of burning it with an old petrol lighter, unfortunately she sets the whole bush on fire and panics slips on the wet floor and falls right out the window 24 floors up, Pat and Mick staggering home from the pub and Mick looks up and says " look Pat, is that a comet ? " don't be daft Mick, that's a twat alight ". Keep up the good work pal and take care.

    Hey Paul, pedals are indeed like wine. We don't all like the same thing. And it's easy to get convinced that you SHOULD like a particular pedal / wine because it's expensive and /or someone says it's great. We MUST try things for ourselves to see what suits us best. I thought most of your pedals sounded good, even similar to a degree, but I'll bet as the player you found each of them had their own character and feel. I have a fair few ODs myself and find the problem is remembering each pedal's 'sound' when stacked. So I'm on a mission at the moment to arrive at my fave combinations of guitar, amp and pedals. "I may be gone for some time".

    Interesting shootout Paul. You of course make them shine each and every one. Even the Peavy amp sounded quite OK for some moments there 😀 But really, the most important thing about the tones you get is how you, the musician, control the dynamics and always listen in and adjust for the smallest change in tone along the way while you're playing. Touch sensitivity, ability to put to life what you imagine for the next tone you're gonna play... The details. Uncle Larry talked about it once... the difference in a good and in a superior instrument (I think it was). It is down to the last percentage of details. And to me, regarding pedals - It is the ones that gives me the sought after harmonic's, and inspires me to play for ever and ever.... That's just of course my two pennies' worth ☺

  • @Vito_Tuxedo
    @Vito_Tuxedo 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Paul - Your videos share one thing in common with Simon Jarrett's demos of his Kingsley Pedals; for me, the real attraction is your playing (and Simon's). As far as the pedals go, they all sound similar because of your Cornell amp, and its settings. The Hagerman sounded very, VERY different in video #1 due to the ultra clean sound you had on the Marshall. In fact, I loved the way it sounded there. In video #3, it was kind of "...meh." And I agree...your Cornell amp sounds great on its own!
    What that tells me is that, for someone like me whose basic amp sound is ultra clean to start with, the 12AX7 pedals are exactly what I need when I want overdrive. There is no solid state pedal I've ever used that gives me the smooth OD sound, dynamic responsiveness, and harmonic richness of tubes given the fact that my basic amp sound is super clean.
    So, this video series was super helpful, even though I reached a verdict very different from yours. Thanks for that, and for some great playing! - Vito 😎

  • @valueofnothing2487
    @valueofnothing2487 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Very helpful. This is consistent with my experience. I think it's more important to get the right eq in the gain stages and diodes etc... Than to just use a tube. And that's why turning up the gain and lowering the master on a tube amp is often disappointing.

I dig your butterscotch telecaster !!!! I own a 52 avri tele for a while and its my favorite guitar , ive switch the neck for a american professionnal neck since i like flatter neck radius, it was 7,5. I play this guitar so much im about to do a third refretting on this neck😃 and ive redone a custom radius on it , 9,5 to 14 😎 i like your playing style a bunch , i only discovered youre youtube channel last weekend ... so much great licks to learn from your videos ! great sounds Paul. The "clean tone" on the Cornel is actually clipping (overdriving the pre-amp) and sounds great on it's own. listen at 5 min 20 sec. That must colour the sounds of the pedals somewhat. If you were comparing reverb pedals,, would you leave some reverb turned on in the amp itself?
    I mean this to be constructive commentary. Love your stuff.

    I always love your videos, works of art in themselves. One thought that always haunts me is, doesn't it depend on what type of music one plays as to how tones can be judged? When I play alone, there are tones that I think can't be topped, then I take those same tones into a group setting and... WTF happened to their greatness? I may be tone challenged, that thought keeps haunting me as well, or possibly, there are so many variables in any given situation that just depend on what else is occurring in order to gauge a true response.

    Paul this was a good enjoyable demo. The price differential between these pedals is significant. But I always think that to get that 5% extra cream you have to pay a lot. I think the Harlot is the best of the bunch for sure but it should be for the money. For me personally buying a Boss BD2 was an eye opener. I have many other more expensive pedals but this just does it for me. And I guess it does not matter what the pedal is it's how it inspires you to play that is important.

  • @archiekay274
    @archiekay274 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Brilliant comparison Paul. I really got something from this video.The Harlot sounded like it really just wanted to be let off the leash. So putting that aside I liked the sweet cream, Hagerman, Mojo and the BD2. I didn't warm to the two Tube screamer pedals which I thought sounded thin. At the moment I'm running a BD2 into a Zoom G5n multi effects where I have a clean boost and then a Honey Drive model. The sweet cream would replace the honey drive model and a TC Spark would give me a clean boost. If I could justify the cash outlay then the Harlot would find a way in there too!!
    I know you've got your nice high end guitars and quality amps, but it's good to hear your comments regarding drive pedals and how affordable pedals can do the job.

    Wise comments, but there is still something in it. I loved the Junior into the Cornell, that was divine. The Peavey sucked, but I’ve heard great tones from you on your Katanas. In fact I’ve gone to the store, set one up the same and quite happy with the tone. Totally usable.
    But I’ve heard some lovely tones out of modelers too. Go check out Alex Price’s premium patches. Pretty amazing. I don’t know what matters anymore other than great fingers make great tone. Great tone can be made from a lot of gear. For me, I really love the Page and Minstrel into my Twin. But I’ve had killer tones playing straight into vintage amps as well.

    I cannot thank you enough for this video, and especially for your incredibly creative and soulful playing. That part where you begin playing directly to the amp, I just forgot all about pedals and stuff and was in awe of your beautiful phrases and profound musicality. All those Harmonic Minor phrases, and nuances, and those harmonics on top made them unique and not just another typical pentatonic stuff you hear all over the place... I loved it! Also, English not being my native language I hope you don't mind me asking about you super beautiful accent? Is that Irish? Scottish? As an Iranian/Persian (who lives overseas) it reminds me my fellow people of Isfahan, the ancient city of Iran...
    Anyhow, I'm a working session player myself and doing mostly soundtracks for all sorts of projects. Recently I was thinking about getting one or two of these tube drive pedals as they just sound gorgeous and meaty. Have you ever tried the Minstrel before? Any video I've watched about that pedal just sounds super delicious and smooth. Please never change and cheers!

      Hi Konnective! Sorry for such a late reply. I’m delighted to read such nice compliments about my playing. Thank you, that means a lot, especially coming from a session player such as yourself. As regards my accent…. yes, it’s Scottish. I’ve been in Edinburgh all my life. I’ve never played the Kingsley Minstrel but, like you, it sounds great! In fact, if I had to start my pedal journey all over again, I think I’d just get 2 or 3 Kingsley pedals and be done 🤣. Anyway, thanks again, cheers to you 🍻

      @@paulstaffordcook8799 For some reason I missed the YT notification for your comment, sorry about that. Honestly, there is a genuinity, no BS approach, kinda not following the usual trendy guitar scene shenanigans in your playing that is indeed wonderful. I'm not a social media guy myself for some reason, but whenever I get time I try to find inspiring guitar videos here, and looking for Kingsley stuff I found your channel. So far, I've watched a bunch of them and I really love them all. Your playing is sublime, honest and incredibly melodic, which is the most important thing IMHO.
      And yeah, since that time I've actually got some Kingsley pedals directly from Simon, and I'm beyond happy with them. Already reamped a lot of tracks in the studio and the result is just great. BTW, I love your clean tone from your guitars, your touch of course, and also the Cornell amp you're playing through. I looked to see if I can find them here in Australia, but sadly there is not a single trace of them anywhere here yet... Anyhow, thanks for your videos, and please never change! Cheers

    Hahahaha! Your face when you played through that Peavey.... exactly what I expected.
    Here's the rub. You are playing spectacularly good guitars though an equally nice amp and then very subtly pushing that amp with a selection of good quality overdrives. I mean what could go wrong? And yeah they are all going to sound similar, just very slightly different EQ and levels of gain, but you didn't get a bad sound out of the bunch. Mostly because each was set to your taste.
    But put ANY of that nice stuff through that $150 Peavey travesty (or an only mildly better Katana) and it will dutifully transform your tone into garbage! LOL!
    Cork sniffing aside, I really do love those Kingsley tube drives, and might try to own one some day. I think you hit on the point with the Harlot though, you can pretty much take it anywhere. That versatility makes it worth getting.
    And I cannot leave out your beautiful, soulful playing... ;)

    Is it possible that manufacturers put real valves (or tubes as we lowly, miseducated Americans identify them) into the pedals themselves?? I’ve heard rumors that Digitech managed that with some of their multi effects units.
    The coolest thing for me was hearing these things identified as valves the first couple of times I did and being able to ascertain for myself that is what they were. By that time, we had already entered an era when people had stopped wanting the newest, latest thing and were starting to reach back into the vintage bin for old, classic stuff.

    I laughed so hard when you played through the Peavy.🤪😂🤣😆🤣
    They are all loud and abrasive. I had a Peavy Renoun twin 12s (I think, maybe 10s) and it was as loud as my Marshall full stack, but sounded like total crap in comparison. 😂
    You said it right.
    If you want it, get it, but you can definitely get the same sound through a good amp and guitar.
    Honestly, if you look up all the great guitar players, they all have one or two have to have pedals and all the rest are a collection of whatever is in the box, some kind of reverb, delay, chorus, or flange depending upon what their signature sound is, but they still sound the way they sound. All the greats have stories about how their pedal boards went out and they just cranked the amps and kept going.
    The thing that really matters is...
    What motivates you to play?
    If buying the most expensive pedals will drive you then drive on, but most people just run what they brung.
    Play what you have, make it sound the best you can and people will listen. Guaranteed!!!!!💯🎸

    As one would expect, the analog tube overdrives have more hair on them than digital options. Digital is great for outdoors and touring, or if you only have $50 you can spend right now on an amp or an overdrive pedal. It changes A to B, and it does it consistently every time. Analog tubes are not only plugged into the frequency and intensity of the signal, they are also tapped into the environment. It’s that which brings out nuances that digital cannot replicate. You just can’t write enough algorithms to predict the sound wave out of a random speaker tied to another lot of tubes being driven by a random coil wrapped around a random set of magnets disrupted by a random set of strings strummed with a variable force on a random night with random relative humidity and random static electricity in the air. Digital gives each bit 2 possible binary outputs. Analog’s possibilities are infinite. I’m BTW, our sound interface is analog.
