It's 2025 and I still think about this song, and this whole album, often; it transports me back to a very formative period of my life and the positive influence the music of the Pippettes had on me cannot be overstated. I wish they were still around today, and in their original format.
I totally agree. Their debut album is just so consistent with many solid and nice songs with great vocal harmony. I wish they had a bigger success. I still listen to it today.
This is a freaking amazing song. I first heard it on the What The Buck show many many years back, and it just.. never left my playlist. One of a few pop songs I never got tired of.
@@geoffhazel2 There was a great WTB video where the music paused every so often for the compare to add a b*tchy comment. Then, back to full blast. Was great. Can't find it, alas.
This was no accident, the whole band was an exercise in manufactured pop appeal. That's why they're called the pipettes cause it was all just an experiment, but yeah totally one of the most enjoyable pop songs ever written.
I don't think I've ever seen a video go for that retro feel and succeed quite as grandly as this one does. If I didn't know better I would swear this was shot in the 60's. The entire aesthetic is spot-on.
They took an actual 60s movie and dropped them in with some modern actors. Pretty sure the movie is Beyond the Valley of the Dolls (only movie written by Roger Ebert weirdly enough). That's why it looks so authentic, cause it is.
It caught on for a little while, Brit dance punk kinda had a 60s revival for a little bit back in the early 00's and it was awesome. Noisettes, Two Door Cinema Club and Arctic Monkeys earlier albums were all throwbacks. I miss those times so hard.
Of course it caught on. Amy Winehouse. Anything else Mark Ronson was producing around that time. Plan B had a hit album off the back of that sound. Duffy and then Adele had chart success with it too to name a few. There were so many bands and pop groups of late 2000's and 2010's that incorporated and interpolated it.
A band called The Waeve were on Later With Jools Holland last night. I liked them so I looked them up on Wikipedia, and the woman from that band was also one of The Pipettes. I remember this song coming out, and the craziest thing is she looks exactly the same. She hasn't aged a day in 17 years. It's witchcraft, I tell you.
The three members of this group are Gwenno Saunders, Rose Elinor Dougall and RiotBecki. They all have mixed feelings about the Pipettes as they are all very accomplished musicians but were never allowed to take full control of the direction the Pipettes took. It's a shame as this song is pure excellence. Gwenno is now very well known for her indie music in the Welsh and Cornish languages. Rose is now one half of The Wæve, with Graham Coxon of Blur. Becki has done a lot of production work and is also a backing singer for Jesca Hoop. Look them up elsewhere on TH-cam. You won't regret it. Trivia alert: Rose Elinor Dougal is the granddaughter of renowned BBC newsreader Robert Dougall.
Love the idea of a #jukeboxmusical with music of #ThePipettes ! Actually, I sometimes think about writing a fanfic episode of #CallTheMidwife where three trainees (a nurse, nun and midwife) end up becoming a musical group based in East London - The Pipettes! 🎶🎤👗
Something's changed here: I don't recall this vid as having needed censorship on YT before. There's nothing there to censor, for goodness sake: as I recall, the seemingly topless girl dancing across the screen was wearing nipple tassels - and knickers - therefore all the bits that needed covering were covered. Somebody being over-prudish here? But I love this clever retro-sixties video: for something done by people who weren't even there in the sixties, it sends up all the cliches of 1960's music TV and film beautifully!

All three original singers left after the first album and were replaced. There were different line-up changed after that. The second album was considered a 'flop' and the band broke up. I believe all three original singers went on to pretty succesfull solo careers or were playing in bands.
beyond the valley of the dolls!
If the UK ever wanted to win Eurovision again, just give The Pipettes a call. This is 'douze points' every time.
No chance, we could have the best song in the world and we still wouldn’t win. Everyone hates us 😂. Eurovision is corrupt anyways
If they ever reunited with this line up, would love to see them crush everyone at Eurovision, but chance would be a fine thing! 🤩😉🤓🎶🎤💯

2025, 2am in the morning, and I suddenly thought "I REALLY need to hear Pull Shapes right now".
2024 ? ❤
Why do people say that.
"These are the pipettes - not that band..." Oh, that's taking me back -I'd entirely forgotten about The Pipettes.
Can't believe they never made it big and it's that long ago.
I still love and listen to this album on a regular basis
I totally agree. Their debut album is just so consistent with many solid and nice songs with great vocal harmony. I wish they had a bigger success. I still listen to it today.

This song has a lot of soul and rythm and blues on it. Not a simple pop song.
This album never left the CD player in my car. It would always lift my spirits going to or from work.

I LOVE THE PIPETTES! One of my all-time favorite groups. Shame that very few people have heard of them here in the Philippines...
If we're being honest, they are unheard of almost everywhere I would imagine!! Such an underappreciated group.
There’s a whole floppy forest

Kidding. Love this song. 😀
Ohh I didn't know the second line! Good ear 🤣
Honestly though I always remember it as 'floppy forest' and couldn't recall the actual lyrics 😬😂
Knew of em years back but still like hearing it.
oh Yeah, here we go!
I loved them when I was in high school
Great video as well, every time I watch I see something different...
A Group that went for a retro "Wall of Sound" throwback that never caught on

Great nod to the 'Carrie Nations' from Russ Meyer's 'Beyond the Valley of The Dolls' in there too.

Absolutely love both their albums. If no revival of the band, how about a jukebox musical looking at their formation and (sadly, brief) chart success?

Its a shot for shot recreation of the party scene from Beyond The Valley Of The Dolls(1970 Russ Meyer). Great film. You should watch it.
