Are These Two Overdrives Really That Different?

  • BOSS Super overdrive Vs. Blues driver, I've had the Boss Super overdrive SD-1 and the Boss BD-2 Blues driver for a while now and wanted to show the differences in this video between the two amazing overdrives.
    The SD-1 super overdrive guitar pedal is modelled on the original Tube screamer circuit and was released in 1988, there have been a few variations of the pedal as well.
    As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases but it costs you nothing extra.
    Blues driver: amzn.to/3wCnmTx
    SD-1: amzn.to/3inDzmU
    The BD-2 Blues driver guitar pedal released in 1995 is modelled after 30 year old tweed amps and has a certain growl to it!
    Which one is your favourite?
    Thanks for watching - Derek

    Bluesdriver, SD-1 or what do you own?

      Both!

      Both, as well as an OD-3. Currently experimenting with stacking order. I play into a completely clean amp. I like the Blues Driver as an always-on overdrive with low gain setting to open up my noiseless singlecoils and add some sizzle to chords. Afterwards the OD-3 kicks in to add more grittiness for single note stuff and finally the SD-1 for creamy solos.

      Both. And on my board both have a very different role and place. The BD indeed for Blues, the SD1 for Gary Moore type overdriven sounds, the Unobtanium Klon part for SRV harshness and the Unobtanium SSS or ODS part for Joe Bo blues rock driven licks. And than the DS-1 for Distored Higain madness. ANd fun to make wonderful combinates. Order: Klon -> DS-1 -> SD-1 -> BD -> unobtanium SSS/ODS. And then the TC wonder duo Flasback / Hall of Fame. Need to go stereo with these two loverboys ... ;-) Into the Mesa Express 5:25 Clean channel most of the time. I'm a happy camper.

      Hello and congratulations for the excellent video. The problem with the boss sd-1 and all the pedals that belong to the tubescreamer family is that they don't work very well on a clean sound or channel. The reason is that the more you lower the gain, the more the bass and, albeit to a slightly lesser extent, the treble are cut (the boss has no more bass than the ibanez ts-9, they both cut equally..). They are overdrives created and optimized to play on a breaking or crunching channel or as a boost together with another overdrive. The boss bd-2 however is a " full range overdrive " and does not cut the bass and can be used as an overdrive on a clean sound. I'd like to suggest you try the boss bd-2 waza Craft made in Japan: in custom mode it's really a different beast...
      Greetings!

    A very thorough comparison of these overdrives. The overdrive rabbit hole can spiral out of control pretty quickly. If there is a secret sauce it might lie in getting to know all the subtle tone variations in one before moving on to another so that down the road when you began to use them in combination you can avoid the sonic mush where they all end up sounding the same. I’ve owned both of these drives and currently use the Blues Driver mostly in combo with other drives. You really can’t go wrong choosing either one. Cheers!

    • @DerekPaulGuitar
      @DerekPaulGuitar  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cheers Brad! it's so true, there are so many overdrives out there and a lot of them trying to achieve the same type of tone with slight variations, i think the blues driver is quite unique in this sense, has something extra, cheers!

    The SD-1 is not technically molded after the tube screamer, it’s the tube screamer that’s modeled after the OD-1 but they had to use symmetrical clipping due to copyright, then came the SD-1 to update the OD-1

  • @voxpathfinder15r
    @voxpathfinder15r ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Very simple, get an old school 80s or 90s fender solid state amplifier, set it clean, set the blues driver to be edge of breakup similar to how guys setup tube amplifiers. Then set the SD-1 to taste as a booster or with some of its own distortion into the blues driver.

    Nice comparison, I don't have either of these *yet*, but I like the smoother sound of the SD-1.
    The BD-2 just sounds a bit too broken up and rough, and in a not so natural way.
    Still really enjoy the conscise, to the point approach of your reviews.. cheers !

    BD-2 is grittier, less compressed and more scooped. SD-1 is less « transparent » but also much more natural sounding to my ears. I much prefer the SD-1 for my needs (lead-boost only, never use OD pedals for chord work)

    I bought a sd in 1984 they were $100.00 usd . Had it a week
    and couldnt make it sound like I wanted but to be fair , was playin thru a peavey solid state which was great w/country but Van Halen not so much . Now its Marshall's , fender , vox/ timmy, odr1 ,
    couple mythos drives ( good stuff)) . Have thot I should try a sd once more and the outcome may be different. And the bd tht iv not tried . Iv got some things to try out . Love the channel

    My thought is: both. I just bought the BD this weekend, and would have grabbed the SD were it in stock. Put both in the chain, play primarily the BD and then hit the SD when a little boost is needed. Right? ...or, would I just be making loud mud with that? (Some things you just don't know 'til you try.)

    Hi Derek, how are thigs in the windy city?.
    I'm really interested to see this comparison as for years I played with a Danelectro TOD as a mild boost, then into an SD-1 for light OD and onto a BD-2 for full on 'madness', well as much 'madness as a Peavey Classic 30 was capable of producing in those days!. Both the Boss pedals were modded as quite frankly, I was never totally in awe of them out of the box and anyway the SD-1 had some well publicised switching issues. The BD-2 was the first pedal I ever bought and frankly, I thought calling it a "Blues Driver" was a bit of a misnomer as there was more drive on tap than the average 12 bar band needed and it was capable of rock levels of drive especially after I embodied the Keeley mod in mine. The pair really worked well together and the SD-1 kept the BD-2 'focussed' if that makes sense, particularly for lead work and was perfectly capable of a really tight low level drive itself in my opinion but I predominantly used it for rock rhythms.
    Occasionally, I would swap out the SD-1 for a Bad Monkey which I also rate and that again worked well, however the much vaunted difference between symmetrical and non-symmetrical clipping fooled my ears completely, I thought they were pretty damn close tonally. One other to throw into the mix I guess is the OD-3. I've never tried one myself but I've heard other people get some really nice tones out of them so possibly my next birthday pressie? Roll on August!
    If I had to choose between the SD-1 or BD-2, which would I go for? In 'modded' state I'd say the The SD-1 as it now has enough drive to get me through most situations and It really does work well with other pedals but I've had both now for over 20 years and they aren't going anywhere, anytime soon.
    Take care, mate.

      @DerekPaulGuitar  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Gareth!! good to see you you here, there are many variations of them, there or thereabouts, i haven't tried the BD-3 but now i'm interested, damn GAS! i think in a full band situation the SD-1 would win it (out of my two) as it has that slight mid boost, theres definitely a difference albeit not substantially different, they are in the same vain after all, happy birthday for August! :) great to talk to you my friend and you stay well in Blighty mate! cheers

    In all these BD-2 demos, I hear fizz, not grit. It’s there between the notes like an aftertaste. I’m watching this because I’m still curious about the Blues Driver, but I’m not yet convinced. I like the SD-1 through a Vox amp. Maybe I don’t like the “tweed” sound.
