We don't know that either of them are "lazy." He's been in a business with a product that customers might postpone or decline because inflation is eating up their own incomes. Everyone thinks they can be a business owner and CEO. Guess what most of you aren’t capable of even mid level management let alone a business owner. This is why 90%+ of businesses fail. People either lack the drive, intelligence, or business knowledge. Most of you are just capable of being an individual contributor and that’s it. Sorry
It is true. I learned early in my work life that I was a valuable follower but a terrible leader. Cool thing is, valuable followers may never be wealthy but they can be paid really well with none of the headache. No need to be sorry, everyone has a place.
Ive noticed many of these calls involve a stay at home mom. I’m pregnant with my first and wish more than anything that I could stay home with my little one, but it’s not in the picture for us just yet. My husband and I live in CO and make over 200k a year and it still wouldn’t make sense for me to quit. So expensive here! The only debt we have is a mortgage. We are not suffering but if we lived off just my husband, it would be stressful and extremely tight.
For a mother that doesn't have a high paying job, it may make sense for her to stay at home. However, I was really impressed with a secretary at my job in the 80s. She wanted to stay at home with their first child, so she quit but she took in another baby to watch, which actually worked out well since her baby had company. She & her husband also delivered newspapers and cleaned some offices in the evening several days a week. They worked it out so that she could stay at home, but they could still have an acceptable income.
It’s all about priorities. Being a SAHM takes sacrifice as the entire family. In this case, it seems they weren’t financially stable or disciplined to handle the sacrifice it takes.
This year is even worse than the last. Last year, I lost a lot of money on bad investments that I never would have made if I hadn't been so worried about my portfolio. Maybe taking care of the household taking care of the kids noting young kids ,it’s more than multiple jobs within itself. It’s a man’s job to take care of the family he is responsible for their financial needs. He needed to be smart that was his job!
A lot of “she needs to work, get night work, work from home” etc but I’ll put in my two cents. Working isn’t just child care, which is significant unless she has an engineering degree in her back pocket, it’s also a lot of phantom costs like transportation, attire, quick food as their both working, taxes on the income etc. It’s always income minus expenses, and a good housewife can significantly bring down the expense side. Better for him to focus solely on income and she do everything else. A lot less friction as well on trying to mesh mandatory work schedules too.
She sat back while they racked up everything on credit cards now she’s good with filing for bankruptcy. She’s part of the problem and they both need to feel the pain or they’ll be back here again in no time. She can do something from home. She needs to do something.
There's ways around this. My husband and I share a car. We picked out an apartment near his work and he usually walks to and from work. I sub in daycares. A lot of them do first kid free. One of them, one of the teachers and her husband share a car. He drops her and the kids off and picks them up at the end of the day. When they needed her to come in early, the director picked her up for a few days. I've had bosses offer to drive me occasionally, but we don't really need that. When the car broke down for a couple days, I rode my bike to and from work. Maybe wife can work part time in timeslots he doesn't need to work or do drop off babysitting at the house.

@@analyticalchick3064 The major thing to be considered is income per hour. For example if he can make $40 an hour and she can only make $20 it makes more sense to maximize his working hours. If schedules mesh perfectly then of course it works great, but real life is usually there are complicated moving parts, friction and opportunity costs. For example he gets offered overtime but she has a mandatory shift she has to work so he has to skip the far higher per hour rate. Also if they are both juggling working a childcare it’s hard to sit down, see the household as a functioning unit and cut down on waste. $100 in saved expenses is worth more than $100 in income

My partner says, do not worry, if you can not work for some time, I will support you. I am not doing it, because I am lazy, I am authentically unable to work. Jade and Rachel are out to lunch. $85k cc debt is growing $1k/month+. He brings home $4k and has to raise a family. He is a perfect candidate for bankruptcy.
He needs to forget about building decks and find a new job as an electrician. A journeyman or master electrician should be earning more than $33/hour. He also needs to work as much overtime as he can and cut his lifestyle for a few years. He doesn't need to file bankruptcy.
They aren't out of touch. The strategy is that they make sure they can pay for their four walls: shelter, food, transportation, and utilities. That's it...they can do that with $4k...Ideally he works for someone else and picks up extra hours to make more than $4k a month since he isn't good at running his own business. Take the L and move on, entrepreneurship isn't for him. Pick yourself up and move on. The credit cards get paid if there is anything left at the end of the month. As Jade and Rachel stated in the video, he will need to end up negotiating a settlement with his creditors for pennies on the dollar. That doesn't require bankruptcy. It requires a phone call to the lenders saying "I can't pay, I don't have it, now its your problem. You need to work with me to settle these debts". Dave regularly states that most credit card companies will settle for 10 to 20 cents on the dollar once you twist their arm enough... That's like $10,000...a far cry from $85,000 and not enough to turn your life upside down going the bankruptcy route...
Some people really don't know how to run a business and they just jump in head first without any idea on how to make things work when the business is facing a down time. Last year he had a good year and he didn't save anything for a rainy day.

While I like the sentiment of looking at things that can make you money as a side gig, people need to be very careful on what they recommend. You can mow your neighbors lawn for money, but your stove is not going to legally make you money. You may get away with it, but food sales, even small amounts, have very specific rules for food safety, and making food in a non-commercial kitchen can land you in legal hot water. BTW, I think this rule is stupid, I don't support this rule, but I don't want people getting into legal trouble either. You don't need to be clawing your way up out of a debt hole to be knocked back down by Government fines and liens.
That's a lie. The cost of daycare is like $3 an hour per kid of working full time hours. Work at a daycare and the first kid is free. They can stagger where he works early like 6 or 7am start and then she takes them in to daycare and goes to work and then he picks them up. I work in daycares. Most of the time the opposite parents do drop off and pick up like that. Usually dad drops off between 6 and 8am in construction clothes and wife picks up between 2 and 6.
These guys have been sitting in a burning house talking about what's for dinner. Meanwhile, the house is about gone now. Hard choices should have been made a few years ago.
I know someone with over 30 credit cards, has filed bankruptcy once already and likely will have to again. People don’t listen and see bankruptcy as a get out jail card yet never solve the real issue of their finances.
Too soft, Dave would have given him a proper jolt to his system. Quit wasting time with the brother in law and get a better new job and wife too. 100k 2 years back is irrelevant and keeping him living in hope of it repeating. Should have heard house prices and mortgage costs etc.
I’m surprised they didn’t bring up selling the house. The family could pay off the debt and rent while they start over until they can buy another house. . Or if they have multiple cars, sell one and pay off the lower balance cc.
The days of being a stay at home mother for most people are OVER. Relic of the olden days. Unless you have a wealthy husband you're going to have to figure out how to work AND raise your children. The economics of today make having a single income household out of reach for the majority of people. Its a luxury now.

Why have a baby?
For a mother that doesn't have a high paying job, it may make sense for her to stay at home. However, I was really impressed with a secretary at my job in the 80s. She wanted to stay at home with their first child, so she quit but she took in another baby to watch, which actually worked out well since her baby had company. She & her husband also delivered newspapers and cleaned some offices in the evening several days a week. They worked it out so that she could stay at home, but they could still have an acceptable income.

I currently have a very good credit score but a few years ago my credit was somewhat mediocre and I applied for an REI store credit card and they approved me for $25,000, which is an absurdly high amount for an outdoor recreation retailer.

@@Sable1837 So I would say we don’t know if she just “sat back” or is good with bankruptcy, maybe she is but we don’t have her side of the story. She does need to work, but like a regular wage slave you have rockstars and slugs in homemaking; we don’t have the information to know where she falls.
Also it’s interesting you associate employment with punishment, I would prefer not having to go to a job but I wouldn’t go that far

$85k cc debt is growing $1k/month+. He brings home $4k and has to raise a family.
He is a perfect candidate for bankruptcy.

Bankruptcy is legalized stealing

You don't need to be clawing your way up out of a debt hole to be knocked back down by Government fines and liens.

They both need to go out and get jobs. Call those credit cards and get on a payment plan. Sheesh, this is crazy.
