Was just going to suggest the same thing. In the 80’s a large ship crashed into a bridge spanning the Tampa Bay in Florida during a bad thunder storm and they rebuilt the bridge using the existing infrastructure. Maybe something similar could’ve happened.

In real life, the bridge doesn't get knockdown to get an upgrade, instead, they will build the new one next to the old one, while the old one will still be in operation until the new one is open.
So it will be nice if $2.20 put some old bridge's foundation next to the new bridge. However, as C E Perez mention, the old bridge probably got destroyed by a large ship during a bad storm, and then they rebuilt the bridge using existing infrastructure makes a lot of sense.

I think you should keep the Anzac bridge, it’s amazing. And you can tell a story with why it’s there. Maybe the old one was to small or needed replacement. Maybe the whole highway was given a huge update in the 90s. Great video so far! Clicked as soon as I saw the notification haha

13:04 - yes, it’s very realistic that they’ve updated the bridge entirely to be a suspension bridge. Many places replaces bridges - check out Boston’s project to replace an old bridge with a new suspension one from a years ago. It makes complete sense that they would’ve kept the infrastructure that was there in the lead up to the bridge if it was in good condition, and then just replaced the bridge.

Back when I used to cross the harbour bridge on my bike, they’d make you dismount to go up or down the stairs (though there’d always be the odd madlad on their fixie descending in the saddle). Advocacy groups have been pushing for a ramp to be installed there for what feels like a decade.
As far as good cycling infrastructure in dense areas go, some of the best infrastructure comes from road dieting in general. Reducing the amount and speed of vehicle traffic is good for both cyclists and pedestrians alike, and the process usually allows extra space for dedicated bike lanes also. George street in Sydney is a pretty good example of this, though if you swing by Sydney Town Hall they have a number of town planning models in and off the main lobby which showcase street scape examples with this process in mind. How that all translates back to Cities Skylines is another matter though.

I think the bridge is great! Its definitely plausible that the modern span replaced an old one and they kept the brickwork. Or maybe the brickwork came after the bridge as a downtown revitalization project? I think the contrast between the modern span and the brickwork anchors give the bridge a story and some character. Great work as always $2!

  • @namenamename390
    @namenamename390 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I think having the new bridge with some "historic" arcades at the end will work fine. The story might be that the road was getting too busy and needed reinforcement due to heavy traffic, so they added or rebuilt the suspension, but they were able to preserve the brickwork at the ends of the bridge.

The bridge collapse of '92 changed Dundee forever. With the loss of not only a major transport connection, but the loss of a historic monument, the city was quick to understand how urgently they needed to find its replacement and refill the hole it left in the skyline, challenging the best of the best in bridge design to do just that. And so, on March 19, 1993, the stunning Gateway Bridge was finally opened to the public.

Totally realistic to build a new bridge in an old area to accommodate new traffic requirements! You even see new and old bridges close together... just look at the bridges that cross the Brisbane River into the Brisbane CBD and surrounds! Bringing together different architecture styles from different areas gives a city character and makes it diverse and interesting.
As for a name for the area inspired by The Rocks, with hotels and bars... maybe something liquour-related - something you can have "on the rocks"...

This has quickly become my favourite series!
Maybe for the under the bridge section it could be in a transition between old industrial and being bought up and developed? Would make the city look more alive if there was a construction site like in the shot at 17:00 and be more distinct from the other built up areas
    Regardless, Dundee is looking amazing!

The solution to the bridge looking out of place is simple: The old one was deemed unsafe after part of the deck collapsed, and the repairs required a complete reconstruction.

Love this series already, keep up the amazing work. Name suggestion for the old industrial area could be the ‘Gaslamp District’ after the Gaslamp Quarter in San Diego. It’s a really cool area which matches well with your idea of the old architecture, especially if you decide to use gas-lamps as well, whilst also being modernised in recent years. There’s a whole website explaining the history if you wanted to read more into it, but a key quote that also shows the link to your area is ‘The Gaslamp Quarter has successfully transformed into a premier shopping, dining, and entertainment neighbourhood.’

I think you could say there was an old bridge in the past that collapsed. So the city built the new suspension bridge to be safer, but kept the old brick retaining walls because they are heritage buildings. To ass to this you could have some kind of memorial park nearby to commemorate the old bridge's collapse.

The bridge you used is fine. You could say they demolished the old bridge and built a new one to replace it, but kept some of the old infrastructure. This very thing happened in my home town where an old bridge just couldn't handle the increased congestion and was in very poor condition anyway, so instead of repairing the old one constantly they demolished it and built a new bridge on the old bridge's supports.

13:10 I'm not an architect or engineer, but when they put in a bridge similar to the Anzac in my city they had to replace a huge section of the highway on both sides of the bridge.
You can keep the bridge and find something other than the brick or replace the bridge and keep the brick, but I don't think they go together.

  • @nicolasblume1046

5:50 there's always enough space for bike paths. There's just not always enough space for cars then.
Look at Paris! Used to be a traffic nightmare just 2 years ago, and now it's a bike city. They just took massive amounts of space away from cars and gave it to bikes and pedestrians

  • @bbmikej
    @bbmikej 3 ปีที่แล้ว

With the bridge: It's possible the older bridge had structural issues and needed to be taken down and replaces, but all the roads leading up to it were still structurally sound as they are essentially just a brick wall. What you could also do is have the main section of road be the old style of brick but some of the on and off ramps be newer as if they added them once cars were dominant. The center would be like an old railroad viaduct that was turned into a highway, but since cars can take tighter turns and higher grades they added the ramps in the 50's when the rail line was converted to a highway.

American cities outside the North-East do tend to be quite boring in that way. I think you picked the right focus when building both Miami and Springfield and now I look forward to seeing more of these cool bridges and elevations in Oceania.. loving this series!
On the bridge question: I think it makes sense that the brick walls are from an older version of the bridge. But an old bridge in this location would likely have fewer lanes and no provision for these sweeping on- and off-ramps. So I would make one side of the bridge have the brick walls and the other side be the modern expansion.

I live in an area where an old bridge was knocked down and a new one built (cracks in the bridge pillar foundation) they kept the ramp system with it's retaining walls and such so I don't think they would replace the beautiful retaining walls in this city. As for a name for the district I'm thinking Tinate, an up and coming very hipster area with bars and hotels and just fun. Maybe a few apartments where young adults live, those who work in the bars.

I think with such a key bridge, they wouldn't have replaced it, without also replacing the highway around it. Because they would still need the traffic to flow, the new bridge would've been built next to the old bridge, and then the old bridge removed. So there would be an obvious deviation showing that the older bridge was next to the new one in the layout of the highway. And you'd need new highway for the deviation. Also this bridge looks to be on the perfect location on the landscape which is where you would expect the fist bridge to have been, so you would have to change that as well to make it more realistic and believable.
I think replacing the bridge with an older one is probably the best idea. Maybe something like the story bridge in Brisbane? The Anzac bridge could go somewhere else in the Map.

I think it's entirely reasonable for the infrastructure of an older bridge to be left in place when a new bridge is built. It could also have just been a stylistic choice by the architects to blend the old area into the new bridge.

  • @soupvc

a new bridge with old foundation works for me as it can be a replacement for a fallen bridge like the one in Genoa, but i would imagine the roads with the old foundation having older road texture and not quite continuous with the newer part of the bridge.

    Bridge question:
In real life only half the highway would have the old retaining walls. When they replaced the bridge they would have duplicated the highway to allow for all the new traffic. So for actual realism you would leave the new bridge and change the way that half of the lead-in highway was built.
If you check the rail overpass on Flinders St in Melbourne you can see the old style brick supports on the city side with wrought iron work, and then more modern concrete on the river side where they have extended it in the late C20

An 'itch' I have with the hotel is the contrast between the strait lines in the park and the curved façade of the hotel. If the paths in the park curved with the curvature building, The space would appear more natural and give the image that the park was designed around the architecture of the hotel.

this all looks so good! About the bridge, the one you have looks nice, but it might not look very realistic. I don’t know the steam workshop, but maybe a bridge that looks more like the big bridge in Brisbane? I don’t know what it’s called but it’s beautiful!

i recommend the names “Larimer Square” or “Five Points”. the rejuvenation aspect of that area in Sydney reminded me of those places in the city i live in but those names are probably a little too American sounding for this city lol

You could say the old bridge collapsed and was replaced with a new one, which would explain the older infrastructure on the shores, which was re-used.

For the bridge you can have both old and new parts. Imagine a disaster like the collision of the Tasman Bridge occured so a new bridge in Dundee has got rebuilt but some of the original span remained.

Those pillars placed under the bridge roadway are redundant, the roadway is held up by the cables. Take a look at the western distributor before it flows onto the anzac bridge to give you an idea of where the pillars should go.
Anzac bridge is my favourite too

Ok here is my story for the bridge
In the 1960s there was a swing bridge across the bay which was in bad condition an often stuck. Also the number of automobiles increased an the bridge came to its limits. So the removed the bridge, built an suspension bridge and also built the highway so traffic could avoid the downtown.

A significant and historic city centre bridge might not be razed for a new build but maybe a secondary modern bridge added close by or right next to (the three firth of forth bridges coincidentally near dundee scotland, each built in a different century to meet the increasing demands). looking at those victorian brick arches, theres a stunning example of a dramatic suspension bridge of that exact period and style of mid 1800s called Clifton bridge which could fit really well for your case

Please keep the bridge! It's pretty common to build new bridges in old alignments, keeping old ramps

I really like the name Abbotsford for one of the older residential areas close to the cbd. It’s the name of some places in Leederville, Perth which is quite old and now bustling

It's a suspension bridge, but in Seattle, they did replace the Evergreen Point Floating Bridge with a new one in 2016.

Speaking of bike paths, Not Just Bikes has a ton of really cool videos about bike and non-automobile infrastructure, maybe you'd find them useful for a future project
