    As an American I would assume that the reason America has so many more road deaths is because we don’t really rely much on public transport especially and those red and black areas. For example I live in Missouri and I don’t think I could find public transport if I tried.

    • @Abstract_zx
      @Abstract_zx ปีที่แล้ว +7

      its not as much that we dont rely on public transit as much as it is that we simply dont have nearly as much public transit infrastructure and access as europe does

    • @evernewb2073
      @evernewb2073 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      part of it is just the sheer amount of distance to cover for emergency services: there are a lot of areas in the us where if you aren't near a city you aren't near _anything_ and another fairly related large part is the utter nightmare that is our healthcare system, but the biggest part by far? it's the damned SUVs.
      they get in far FAR more accidents than any other kind of vehicle per time in use or distance driven because they are crap vehicles and possibly due to the target demographic they are marketed towards?

    • @Tessa_Gr
      @Tessa_Gr 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@evernewb2073 100% agree about those SUVs.
      In Germany we didn't used to have them at all, but in recent years they sadly became popular. And the cars just keep on getting bigger, causing safety issues, parking issues, taking up much more resources as well.
      But what I don't agree about is that the size of the US is the reason for no public transport.
      You're much faster on a train than by car. Especially if there are few stops.
      Just put some tracks between the more populated areas and you can easily travel with 200 km/h while also being able to read/use your phone/laptop/etc. If there are not that many people, a smaller train would be enough, for remote locations there could be something like a button that let's the train know if they need to slow down to stop at the next train station or not.
      Definitely makes more sense than everyone sitting hours in a car to drive somewhere.
      The real reason is of course the car lobby. We have similar problems in Germany but at least we have a public transport system, even though it has huge issues thanks to the car lobby.

    Just because the last monarchs to die in battle were a long time ago doesn't mean that they stopped fighting in battles. George II of Great Britain fought in the Battle of Dettingon in 1743, and the Austrian, Russian, and Prussian monarchs fought in the Napoleonic Wars from 1803-1815 and the king of Saudi Arabia led troops in 1934. Elizabeth II also fought in WW2, but that was when she was still a princess.

    I live in USA California, there’s a tectonic line right through my state. Earthquakes are quite common here and it’s almost shocking that some people from other places think that they’re “a cool story” or something.
    You all really don’t have to worry about putting a book shelf next to your bed?! 😅😂

    • @briseboy

      They ARE cool!
      I have lived where most california quakes occur for a long time.
      And i was once driving from a prevjous california home, where volcanic earthquakes are common, to SF for a meet, when, just after dawn, i awakened hearing a coming quake with my head on the ground, to hear the birds and other animals all erupt in song, and that big quake in Hayward dropped bridge parts on drivers.
      Although one quake wouldn't let me stand without grabbing wall this winter, the BEST one was when a teen, we surfers watched telephone poles wiggle like vertical snakes, and a BIG chunk of cliff came down, on a quiet sunny day.
      So, i sweep up glass. And replace culinary tools jolted out of drawers &shelves.
      Only one reasonable tsunami, though. Water receded beyond pier's end, then closeout waves brought it up to cliff bottom.
      My brother once complained from south pacific, about no one caring for the 250k who were washed away in indonesia.
      But there, the water's warm, if full of broken houses.
      It's also nice to xc ski to boiling springs where constant rumbling is louder than people noise -- THAT's what really sucks on earth!

    As a fellow Englishman, my experience with food at friends houses growing up was being asked by their parents if I wanted something, saying no due to not wanting to put them out or feeling like a scrounger, and then them following it up with "are you sure?" half a dozen times until I relented.

    • @catelynh1020

      As someone from the american midwest, in a more rural area, you go to someone's house and if you're going to be there for something social for more than, say, an hour, food is put down in front of you without you being asked if you want any. Specifically snack food like sweets or pickles or apples.
      If you're over around a mealtime, you just get asked if you'd like some of the meal as well, or if you want something different. Growing up, I had a friend who didn't like tomatoes and when he came over somewhat unexpectedly or wasn't expected to stay long enough to be there over suppertime, we'd offer he could have what we made that had tomato, or that he could pick any leftovers from the fridge or even a TV dinner or something to eat so he wouldn't have to go home just because it was a mealtime.
      But I realize this is probably not normal

    The craziest thing about the road deaths map in the US is the more populated states with big cities (California, Illinois, especially New York) had less deaths per million people, whereas the underpopulated states like Montana, Arkansas, Mississippi, and OMG Wyoming have a lot more. I wonder if it's because less people drive in the more populated states (they take subways, trains, etc). Same can be said for big cities in Europe too, and just lots of trains in general which is probably one of the safest ways to travel.

      In the 20th century, Americans thought of California as encapsulated by 4 cities - all starting with B - that represented 4 dramatically different extremes. Burbank, where the TV shows came from; Berkeley, where the student uprisings were; Bakersfield, where the farm produce and country western music came from, and Beverly Hills, where the movie starts lived. All 4 were overgeneralizations, but Americans overgeneralized in the 20th century.
