I really enjoy you 2 and your reactions. For A Perfect Circle, I would recommend listening to: Judith (many people mistakenly thought this was a Tool song back when it was released on the radio), Orestes, 3 Libras...and so many more.
My Favorite song on this album is *THE NOOSE* .. The band builds a really cool soundscape and paints pictures of hypocrisy and regret. I highly recommend THE NOOSE.
Funny how nobody mentionned their last album in the previous comments... ok, "Mer de Noms" is the best album released in 2000 for me... yes, "Thirteen Steps" is close to be as amazing as the previous one, and that was a challenge. But guys, don't miss "Eat the Elephant", their more recent gift to us. This album is... is... is... I cannot find the words to give it justice. A piece of art, for sure. Peace !
Yes feathers is the most beautiful song. The way his voice carries the note at the end of every line just crushes me. I find it hard to breathe when I listen to that song full blast.
From what I understand APC was the brainchild of Tool's guitar tech Billy Howerdell. Billy approached Maynard with some material that Maynard penned some lyrics for and APC was born. This track is from 13th Step their second album. Try the Outsider by these guys or By and Down, both are amazing. There is a lot of great material here, I hope you guys keep digging. Along with Puscifer, APC gives Maynard a whole different creative outlet. Thanks for posting. More Steven Wilson and Maynard, yes please!
I think what you’re trying to say about a more “simplistic” metal..or ”slow” metal, is that it induces almost a trance feel....hypnotic, repetitive rhythm. This is heavily present in North African, Middle Eastern music. For myself, it is my favorite form of rock and metal...I love to lose myself in the trance vibe. YES! You just said Porcupine Tree. Spot On.....Also a bit of Pineapple Thief. Taking it back to the 70’s, that same hypnotic beat and vibe is to be found in, for instance, When The Levee Breaks by Zeppelin....or Bridge of Sighs by Robin Trower. In the sixties, While May Guitar Gently Weeps has that repetitive, slow, hypnotic beat.
The track title immediately made me think of Passenger from Deftones. Maybe something you'd dig, too. Who knows. I believe Maynard sings backup on that particular Deftones track, as well. Another band that Maynard heads up is Puscifer. Must admit I haven't yet given Puscifer a lot of time. A Perfect Circle tracks to check: The Hollow ( a first track... from their first album), Rose, Judith, Thinking Of You, Gravity. I need to spend some time on their later albums.
Maynard also formed Puscifer in 2003 which has some AMAZING music.....it differs from his other projects in adding a female vocalist to the mix. listen to The River by Puscifer...
Im a huge Maynard fan...I really hope u do more A Perfect Cirlce. It is a totally different side of Maynard. He is also a vocalist in Puscifer. He always surrounds himself with great musicians.
You once again have made my day! Great request! Thirteen step is their best album. Great from beginning to end! Im glad you were so excited to learn Maynard was the vocalist! Please do a full album review someday! I will Patiently wait... thanks again Nick and Lex!
Loved your Spot On Insights !!! For me the Song evokes a Deliciously Grungy Darkness. The Vocals give one a feeling of Honest Desperation. The guitar and Percussion are Perfectly balanced with the singer And don't overpower. The riffs and flourishes add Depth to the beautifully morose tone of the song. Love and Thanks Ken
The Personnel on this album Maynard James Keenan (Vox) - Tool, Puscifer Billy Howerdel (Gtr) - Had been Adam Jones (Tool) Gtr Tech Josh Freese (Drums) - Nine Inch Nails, Devo, The Replacements, 3 Doors Down, Evanescence, Seether and others Twiggy Ramirez (Bass) - Marilyn Manson Troy Van Leeuwen (Queens Of The Stone Age), Paz Lenchantin (Pixies, Melissa Auf Der Mar) and Danny Lohner (Nine Inch Nails) helped out on a couple of songs on the album too
It brought me great joy to see you discover in real time that Maynard is the lead singer of A Perfect Circle, and your subsequent comment about how that is a big deal. 10000% lol. Have fun exploring their catalogue. And I'm sure others have mentioned, he's the lead singer of Puscifer as well.
I haven't seen many reactions on YT to this song. This is my absolute favoritevtrack on this album. You should watch them performing this song live in Red Ricks. Something that you should see.
this whole album was about addiction and destructive patterns, the "13th Step" being a quip arising from the 12 step community in which an addict falls back into old behavior. i think Maynard made a joke in an interview once about the album title, saying that when he was younger, he had fallen off the 13th step and messed himself up. I think he was making a reference to when you're young, narcissistic, and maybe imbibing all these intoxicating substances that reinforce your bad behavior, you just keep repeating the same cycle over and over. It's also commonly thought that a gallows has 13 steps. The 13th trump card of the Tarot is Death. Both Tool and APC seem to be pretty pro-psychedelic in the sense that it can be used for empowerment and self-realization, but also advocating for caution, moderation, etc. Finally, with all this in mind, "The Package" can be seen as networking and using people purely for the sake of getting "the package" e.g. a fix for withdrawals
Nice, you would definitely like diving into more APC. I've recently got into Katatonia's The Great Cold Distance album, and I kinda get APC vibes from that one, I recommend to check out..
Nick in perfect german? Hats off to you, man. The bass in this song is SO THICK!! This entire album is fantastic. The title is a reference to the 12 step program of the AA. Maynard actually has a THIRD band, Puscifer, mandatory to check out. Try The Remedy.👍🍺🍺
This song is the perfect song for anyone who was or is addicted to heroin or other bs-this describes getting your fix-package-perfectly. By a Perfect Circle. All 3 of Maynards bands are the best to see live btw. Don't miss
Yes, definitely listen to Mer de Noms and Thirteenth Step, as they are classics. There's also a cover of John Lennon's "Imagine" that is worth checking out on the Emotive album. I for one think their last album "Eat the Elephant" is not good at all and is more in line with Maynard's other side project, Puscifer...not my cup of tea.
I stole this comment from someone else but I love it. Maynards 3 bands, you could look at them representing different parts of a person. Tool is the brain/intelligence. A Perfect Circle is the Heart/emotions. And Puscifer is the genitalia/libido.
Excellent song choice. I just subbed because this channel seems to be moving in the right direction. Keep it up!! Also please venture more into the genius and diversity of Maynard’s projects. I strongly suggest “Puscifer “ - “potions “and “mama sed” to start. You won’t regret it. Peace ✌🏼
You need to listen to "Ghosts and Typhoons" by Pure Reason Revolution. It's like if indie rock and prog rock merged together. Wonderful song with male and female vocals. I think you'll really dig it, the song builds up perfectly. You won't regret it
I can appreciate the musicianship but not my kind of music. I like being given a chance to hear groups like these but once was enough. Love your diversity!
I LOVE 70's prog, but I never understand with modern prog why they need to mix super-heavy heavy metal in with it. I don't think the two genres go together. And ironically, Rush, who are often dubbed one of the main forefathers of prog metal, weren't really metal (more hard rock) and were light years above this stuff.
This isn’t metal, this IS the hard rock of early 2000s. Generations of music change and evolve. While it may be heavier than Rush’s hard rock of the day, it fits right in with that decade’s hard rock mix.
@@robdaniel3211 whatever you call it, it's not even close to being in the same league as Rush or 70's prog, and I've rarely ever heard a modern prog album that could hold a candle to the 70's stuff, except for the odd throwback band like Anglagard and Astra.
PERFEKTES Deutsch mein Freund! I knew you would like that. I love the sinister tone and the explosion in the second third. I think this is one of Maynard's best vocal performances. More Yes please. People will tell you to do Close To The Edge, but being a Yes fan since the 80's, I believe that if you want to listen to a 20 minute song, Gates Of Delirium is much better than Close To The Edge. If you want to hear progressive Yes taken to it's most chaotic and clashing, Close to the Edge is the way to go, but Gates of Delirium has a better melody, I think. Even better, do the whole album (Relayer)...it only has three songs, and all three are so different, and so awesome. For a shorter foray into the Yes sound, I suggest And You And I, which I think it Yes' most beautiful song. Also, someday you should check out Leave It, which prominently features their vocal skills.

The Outsider is a really good track off this album. There is a live on Jay Leno show that is awesome
This whole album is a masterpiece, Tool level.
I like how Lex perks up immediately when she hears Maynard is the singer
Judith is one of their best known songs, but I like Gravity very much, and my daughter always liked Pet.

I’m going to keep after y’all. Suite: Judy Blue Eyes from Crosby Stills and Nash’s first album released in 1969. You won’t regret it.
And since y’all love Joni Mitchell...you might like to know that she was Graham Nash’s love interest in the late 60s early 70s.
An EXCELLENT suggestion!

And now we can circle back to "Take a Pebble", a perfect finnish.
Eventually they will get to it, soon I presume. Bravo to you for your persistence.
