Front Runner Roof Top Tent - 1 Year Review on my Jeep TJ

- Hey guys! Here's my full detailed review on how my tent has been holding up since the install about 1 year ago. If you haven't seen my install video for this tent, be sure to check it out on my channel.
Overall, this tent has really served me well and still drives a pretty great value for around $1,000. I have never taken this tent off of the Jeep since I've had it, so it's had it's fair share of weather. I'm very impressed with how it's held up for me. There are a few weak areas, as to be expected with such a lightweight and affordable tent, but I highly recommend it over the cheaper Smittybilt tent.

Very valuable review, one can really size up the quality of the tent once it’s had some wear and tear. When I watched your video when you first got it, I had wondered how it would stand up to some stormy or windy conditions. You definitely addressed those concerns here. Great video man! Few things I wanted to ask after watching the vid. 1. Have you considered applying 303 Aerospace Protectant on that tent cover? I hear it does wonders. Aside from that, looks like it's pretty durable.
2. Have you also considered getting an awning in the near future?

Can you do a video or series where you prep and make some of your favorite camp meals? I’m glad I stumbled upon your channel a few weeks ago!
They make an extension for the ladder but Frontrunner said the more vertical the ladder the better. If it’s out too far it’s not as strong and can bend. I’ve found that keeping the windows unzipped a few inches helped prevent the billowing effect when folding the tent back down. I don’t like the divots in the floor either. Sometimes they seem to go away, especially the bigger ones caused by your knees. I’m anxious to try out the tent when leaving the rain fly at home. I bet it’s a lot quicker to pack up on cold mornings when you want to get an early start.

I'ma put this on my jeep grand cherokee and i'm 6'4" so definitely won't have any issues packing it up haha
This looks great! I’ve wanted to add one to my ‘99 TJ but it seems I get a lot of feedback saying it will make the Jeep really hard to handle. What’s been your experience? I’m only on 33s with a 2” lift but do you feel a lot of sway on the highway?

just a thought on your next tent use 1inch sch40 PVC pipe with caps cut to fit the pockets where the rain cover poles insert to the tent I have not tried this myself I do not own that type of tent if the PVC doesn't fit maybe try a pool noodle or we used to call Nerf Bar foam or some kind of outdoor pipe styrofoam cover to reduce the friction between the tent and the poles
Could try adding some foam squares where the divers from the ladder are. That would get rid of the pockets that hold rain.

Arkansas Offroad my concern is too much up high. With your sway bars disconnected, how did it feel? Was is tippy and sway back and forth a lot more?

I bought the same tent from a friend for 300 bux...I don’t like the same issues you’ve pointed out, especially the underneath where the ladder sits against it when it’s all wrapped up, properly dented!
Yeah the under side of my floor is F’d. Looks like it went through a war. Haha. Not actually compromised but does not look great.
Also, my star gazer windows have covered zipper panels
Put a cookie sheet under your heater if it falls over it will keep your tent from damage
New to the channel, been loving your vids! I had a question as to what size/brand is your roof rack and how much weight can it hold? And is that weight factored in with the tent weight and your own body weight?

How many persons can fit inside, obviously 2 is comfortable, but I'm talking if you can fit the 3th?

With a 15" rim on a TJ you need 4.0" to 4.5" backspace for 33" - 35" tires.

Knowing your pros and cons of the frontrunner tent would you go with the same tent if you had to buy it again?
For the price, yes. But I’d like to spend a bit more and try something else just because. It was an excellent starter tent. I’d like to try a hard shell one day.

Is there a significant difference in MPG? I know the tj isn't great just wondering if it's significant.
Not really. Lose about 1-2 mpg on hw

Hey man, I know this is an old video and you don't have the TJ anymore, but the question I have is with the lift and tires you had.. it doesn't look like it would fit in the garage.?? I was hoping with a 5" lift and 35's with the slimmest rack and tent I could still get it in the garage.. but doesn't look like it..
Well I'm not sure how tall your garage is. I fit in it without the tent. This is a 4" lift.
@@ArkansasOffroad Ok.. Thnx. It's just a standard 7ft, I'm running a 5" lift with 38's right now but thought if I dropped down to 35's maybe it would fit.. but I doubt it.. 😆🤣

How did you mount the recover boards to you spare?
If you watch my traction boards review video, I explain how I made a mount. Since that video, I bought some plastic knobs to use instead of the wing nuts.
