S1 - Ep 224 - Kamieskroon - A Beautiful Town at the Foot of the Kamiesberg Mountains!

  • The gravel road we took from Leliefontein was one of the worst roads yet, the corrugation was really bad. At one point I thought we would arrive in Kamieskroon with only the steering wheel in my hands. But that didn't happen at all. Instead, our mic started playing up and I only realised that when I started editing once we were back home. This town was very interesting and has so much history. I particularly found the Catholic Mission Station amazing. Driving through the streets of this beautiful town we could see the crown in the mountains after which the town was named. The Kamiesberg Mountains loomed large over Kamieskroon as it is located at the foot of this mountain range! #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #travelongravel #kamieskroon #northerncape #nature #leliefontein #kamiesberg

    That's where I started my school life , nearly 80 years ago . Kamieskroon is definitely the "crown" of Namaqualand....however the boarding school was a nightmare for a little girl of six. If I had the inclination , I could write a book just about life in that hostel . Sure nobody would like to be there after reading the book. We used to roam around in the veld on Saturday and Sunday afternoons....eating lots and lots of "veldkos" which grew in abundance in those years. Watching this video it makes me want to go back and spend my last years at the foot of Kardou , that mountain with the crown on. So many memories !!! Know that area so , so well.....😢

    I was in Kamiesberg 40 +- years ago buying goats and went up the mountain to see some goats and the lady of the farm gave me bread fresh out of a bakoond with local honey and water from a little spring right out of the mountain tasted like champagne. Amazing place I really want to go back.

    Yes, Namaqualand is so much more than flowers. Its real beauty is its people, a very special kind of hospitable, and then the rich dialect with its Nama names and influences. This is where real people live in South Africa.

      Absolutely agree! We just adore the rugged beauty of this area. ⛰️ We also loved hearing the accent around every corner, they have a wonderful, rich way of pronouncing the Afrikaans language which makes one just want to hear more and more. It was a very rewarding visit to this part of the country, in so many ways. 🚗🇿🇦

    Hello Dustbug's my wife Helene and I enjoy your travel's. I my self love using the gravel road's. I must ask wouldn't be great if you hire a Suzuki jimny or a Renault dealer 4x4 so you can travel on those road's the little car can't.
    We love what you guy's doing fantastic work, keep on eating dust Dustbug's.

    • @DustBugsTravel
      @DustBugsTravel  ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Thank you, I'm happy to hear you enjoy our videos. 😊 To answer your question, we're not really interested in renting a 4x4 instead of a small sedan. It's a fact that there is a small percentage, which I'll put at around 5, of roads we can't travel on, but that doesn't bother us at all. It's important for people to know that the fact that they don't own an offroad vehicle, doesn't have to prevent them from visiting the remote and forgotten places. It's not often that we encounter such bad corrugation as we did in these areas and if one takes it slow and carefully, the roads are completely passable. Again, we have no problem with that either since we're slow drivers anyway as we try to take in what we pass by. The sedan we rent has taken us to so many places safely, reliably and comfortably. And then we have the small matter of what it costs to rent and feed a heavier vehicle. With the frequency of our travels and the miles we put on, it will cost an arm and a leg and we're not keen to do that. Different strokes for different folks, I guess! 😁🚗

    Thanks for making our town known. Just a correction. The mountain is Kardou and not the crown of Kamieskroon. Kamies is a Nama word - !kamies, which means the fog from the sea comes and gather at the mountain. Dr Steenkamp, who helped started the town, then named the town Kamieskroon because it is the crown of the Kamies mountains. There is so much more to see. Again thanks for a wonderful tour of Kamieskroon.

    Good day DustBugs, thank you for your videos that bring back so many memories of my life in South Africa, especially the western portion including Namibia. Pity once again about the abandoned infrastructure and institutional buildings that have fallen into disuse and decay. It seems the Catholic school once was quite large. One wonders where all the people and their children have gone? By the way, that open area with the large stone 'altar' would have served as an open air church, probably appropriate during the hot summer. On another matter: I admire your practice of responding to each and every comment from your viewers. That is very respectful and considerate and surely involves a lot of 'after hours' work.

    • @DustBugsTravel
      @DustBugsTravel  ปีที่แล้ว

      We're glad to hear that you enjoy travelling along with us to all these special places. 😊 The Catholic Mission Station is indeed a sprawling place and it was great to see that the buildings are still being utilised and are in great shape. I had a chat with one of the ladies at the church and it is still very much operational with a resident priest. ⛪ I would imagine the depopulation of the town led to there not being enough children in the school for it to continue, but no-one we spoke to, knew for sure. At least the buildings are being used now to house families, which is a good thing. We enjoy reading our viewers' comments and love to learn from and interact with them in the comments. Thank you for noticing that! 😎🚗

I had no idea these places existed also the hall for ladies good idea then on to the Catholic mission to me so unusual I think the water dispenser may be for holy water as normally RC churches have a small trough on the wall as you enter for Holy water. I once put up a aerial in a convent outside of Pretoria it was down a sand track very secluded nuns had the large white head dresses and it was a silent order the video has bought back more memories still can't understand why the nun's Couldn't speak but could watch TV thanks for another great video and for bringing back so many memories cheerio till the next one

      You're privileged to come from this area. 👌🏻 We don't know it very well, but it was a singular experience exploring it a little. Thank you for watching. 😊🚗

    The pass would have been more beautifull in flower season

      We'll agree to disagree then. 😁 The flowers bloom for a few months a year. The stark, rugged beauty of the Namaqualand region needs to be celebrated all year round and not only when the flowers bloom. We happen to prefer bare and barren, so this was the perfect time for us to visit and we had a fantastic time. Thank you for watching! 👌🏻🚗

      Thank you, glad you enjoy our videos. 😊 I've got quite the collection of mounts, but none of them provides me with the freedom and range of movement I have with my arm and hand. 😁🚗

    @6:42 it actually looks like a political figure scratching his head with his left hand, speaking into a SABC mic with his right

      Nope, I don't see it. All we could and can still see was / Is the crown! 👑🤩

    That does not look like a crown to me on that mountain. It looks like Buddha to me. Just look carefully☺️🤣

      It very much looked like a crown to us and it must've to the ones who came before us too, to have named the town after it. 👑🚗

      Not sure what you're asking. 🤷‍♂️

      10:56 Psalm 69 verse 37 quote is on a memorial stone. "En die nageslag van sy knegte sal dit beërwe, en die liefhebbers van sy Naam sal daarin woon".
      The descendants of God's servants will inherit Zion, and those who love his name will dwell there.
