    A suggestion, if you wish to have a more intense coconut flavor in the cake use coconut milk instead of reg. milk and add coconut extract...even more mmmmmmmmm!

    • @Honestandtasty
      @Honestandtasty  8 ปีที่แล้ว +47

      I prefer a more natural, not as intense coconut flavor but for those who like it even stronger, then for sure! :)

      the coconut milk suggestion sounds amazing however I probably wouldn't add the extract because a little definitely goes a long way with any type of extracts or essences.

    I want to thank you for such a great recipe! my family loved this cake, and us 3 finished this cake within 48 hours of baking it. I did make a few changes: I added a bit of lemon curd in the middle along with the coconut custard. and because I wanted to cut down on our sugar and butter consumption, I didn't make the buttercream frosting. instead used the custard itself to ice the cake because so much of it was left! and then decorated it with dessicated toasted coconut!! I love this cake. When you decrease the sugar amounts, it is still very delicious. thank you. it is indeed the perfect coconut cake.
    regards,
    Tina

    I made this cake and it was super delicious, but I do have to say that if I make this again I'll be sure to poke holes throughout the cake so the cream can seep in because I found that the cake was a bit dry but it was still moist. The cake again was super delicious but I added more coconut and chopped pecans in the cake so in every bite there was texture. I made a 6 layer cake for my grandmas birthday and she wanted coconut cake with pecans. I made a sponge cake with flavors of coconut added to it and put it between the layers so the bottom and top of the cake would have crunch. For the frosting I made a buttercream frosting but I didn't make it really sweet. What I did was creamed a cup of unsalted butter for like 6 minutes then added 2 cups of powdered sugar (1 cup at a time, creaming for 2 minutes) and it was pretty sweet there so I didn't add anymore and the frosting was still thick. I didn't add any milk at all. I covered the cake with toasted coconut and chopper pecans. Try this cake guys 💓.

      Alicia Gaytan thanks! First time that I made it was dry too, so looking at your suggestion is helpful. Also, definitely going to do your buttercream frosting. Might be better. Her option of frosting was to thin and too sweet. 👍👍

    I loved everything except the frosting. This is a classic American frosting I believe, but I think it's too buttery and too sweet. I'd probably try making an italian meringue buttercream next time so it isn't that sweet or buttery.

    • @Honestandtasty
      @Honestandtasty  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      If buttercream frosting isn’t your thing, you could totally try a meringue! Or even just some powdered sugar dusted over the top. Or even some whipped cream!

    • @Honestandtasty
      @Honestandtasty  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Titie andelina Wiji Thanks for stopping by! You can try vanilla extract instead, but you won't have the same flavor and when I've tried vanilla extract. I was able to taste the slight alcohol in the extract, but that's just me. I also just love seeing the actual vanilla beans in there. As for the height of the cake pans, just the typical cake pan will do (2 - 3 inches in height). Good luck! :)

    Suggestion: your cake will become more dense and change the baking time if you just scoop out the flour, instead fluff the flour before of even shake flour into your measuring cups. Ps you can add the cornstarch to your flour instead of cake flour but it’s really not the same, cake flour is much lighter, I’ve used both and cake flour is way fluffy then the cornstarch but if that’s all you have then it will be okay.

    7 cups of powdered sugar for the frosting!!!!! This is 1750 gr!!! I have never ever heard of such a unbelievably huge amount of sugar in 1 single cake.

    • @Honestandtasty
      @Honestandtasty  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Frosting is almost completely made up of sugar and butter. So unless you want to eat butter straight up, the sugar is necessary. It’s a lot of cake so it needs enough frosting to cover it. But by all means, adjust the amounts to your liking. :)

    this is such a tender cage and the layers are not very thick so I recommend cutting the cake with dental floss as I did. took away any of the headache of cutting it with my serrated cake knife. :-) wonderful wonderful cake I have looked my whole life for the perfect coconut cake. This is number one thus far.
