My Family Lived in Rotherham's Most Haunted House

  • I wanted to tell my spooky family ghost story for Halloween so came to a suitably spooky location. Stocksbridge Bypass is known as the most haunted road in the UK with many terrifying stories. Before we could pluck up the courage to have a look around we went into The Wortley Arms pub for a hearty meal.

Back in 1992 when I was still in the British Armed Forces we did a two day yomp into the middle of Dartmoor for Navigation/Survival exercise. If you've ever been to Dartmoor you'll know that it's very unforgiving terrain, some outcrops of rocks scattered here and there but loads and loads of soggy marshland, interspersed with dilapidated old farming enclosures that have long since collapsed. Day one went pretty much as expected, covering various trig points and spanning about an area of twenty or so miles. As usual for November it was extremely chilly with frost hiding many of the sinking puddles that you could quite easily sink in up to your waist if you weren't careful.
At night we made camp between two south-facing walls that were on a slight rise, careful to not keep any gully between us in case of heavy rain or flooding. To the east of our camp were the remnants of what looked like an old sheep pen, obviously disused since there was very little still standing but if you squinted hard enough you could just about make out a boundary wall that had two large gate-post style rocks.
As it was an exercise we had to treat it like a military operation so we were all told as usual we had to rotate a guard, each of us taking it in turns for 1 hour periods, there would be two stationed at one end of the camp and two of us at the other end (I forget the exact distance, but it was roughly 200 metres as I recall).
We all got some scran down our necks and me and my oppo had drawn third guard which was roughly one o'clock in the morning, so four lads went on guard whilst the rest of us got some shut-eye.
Well, at one o'clock we were rudely awakened by our team mates to take our turn. The weather had got milder and what greeted us as we took our posts was what can only be described as torrential rain. Instantly we were all pissed wet through and miserable. We were also however, wide awake.
About half an hour passed, uneventfully apart from the odd owl hooting away. It was pitch black and cloudy and there was just a chink of moonlight coming through onto the moor.
We expected this to just be another 'character-building' miserable uneventful two-nighter but what happened next will stay with me for the rest of my life.
Let me just say right now that I've never believed in ghosts, apparitions spirits etc and I still don't think I do.
What follows is the honest truth of what five soldiers (including one chief petty officer) saw that night.
My mate Chris turns away from me, squints into the distance and shouts 'Royal Navy! Who Goes There?!'
The wind is picking up and the rain is still teeming down. I thought Chris was trying to shit me up but again he just repeated himself and pointed in front of him.
    'Royal Navy! Who Goes There?!
So as I try and see what he's pointing at, I look off into the distance and about 40 metres in front of us I can just make out a shape.
It's a man. Leaning on a gate. He looks about 40-50 years old and he's wearing a shirt and what appears to be brown(yellow?) trousers.
    He was barefoot.
Just for clarity, we are about ten miles from civilisation, swamp all around us and its pissing down with rain.
No way has this guy walked it to our position barefoot.
The man never moved. Just leaned on the gate like it was a summer evening. He seemed to be leaning back, facing us, looking into the sky.
Like it was the most natural thing in the world.
Our CPO was in the tent roughly next to ours so Chris ran and woke him up which he wasn't impressed with.
I kept my eyes on the man at the gate as the chief started blurting expletives but when he saw what I was pointing at, the chief quickly stopped in his tracks.
    'Royal Navy! Who Goes There?!'
    Nothing.
    'Royal Navy! Who Goes There?!'
The other lads at the opposite end were running towards us, we could hear their boots hitting the ground behind us.
So there were five of us watching this guy leaning on this gate, when all of a sudden the man seemed to notice us.
He seemed to look straight through us. As if he'd heard us but not actually seen us.
Then, he simply wasn't there any more. Neither was the gate he had been leaning on.
We did a search immediately and found nothing. No footprints. No sign of a disturbance.
The next day we conducted another search but came up empty-handed. Just two old stone markers where there had once been a gate.
It only occurred to the five of us that the man we had been staring at for a good 5-6 minutes was stood out in the rain with us yet didn't seem to get wet.
When we got back to Gosport we had an interview and we had to write a report on the events.
I'm out of the forces, nearly 30 years later. I lost contact with some of my friends, one of which passed away recently.
I still cannot explain what I saw, but I will never forget.

Hi James\Helen My spooky experience: I used to drive a truck to Glasgow every night and one stormy night about 1am I was driving over the A66 nr Appleby and I indicated to pull into a layby for a pee and at the beginning of the layby i saw the figure of a women all in black stood in the pouring rain trying to sort her umbrella out it had gone inside out. I thought what is she doing out here on a night like this it was horrendous there were no other vehicles in the layby so i found it strange. I got out of my cab and she was not there totally vanished , really spooked me . When i got home told the wife ,we looked on tinternet we read somewhere that apparently the A66 is supposed to be haunted only saw it the once in 2 years of driving across there and back but it was really eerie and everytime i passed the spot i use to get the chills. Really enjoyed your stories.

Brilliant Vlog. My Nan,(who died in 1990), used to tell us about her Mother, Hannah's experience. So Nanna's Mum, Hannah, was in bed, smoking, she fell asleep, but was shaken awake and awoken by her own Mother, (My Nan's Grandma), shouting, "Hannah! Hannah! Wake up the bed's on fire!" Hannah's Mother had been dead for years. Hannah insisted that she heard, felt and saw he own Mother that night and says she saved her life. My Nan was a straight talking Grantham lady. My Nan also had a big doll (approx 3ft tall), who she had named,' Big Pat.' When my Grandparents both died and we were clearing the house out, Big Pat, who had always been there, every single time before-had disappeared from the place under the stairs where she always lived for years and years. Big Pat had never been out of the house in all the years I can remember and all the family knew the doll-nobody in the family has Big Pat or has seen or heard of her since.

If and when you see something paranormal, your opinion changes completely. The glib, cocky attitude is replaced with confusion, bewilderment and the realisation that the world we think we live in isn't the full story. You go from arrogant to humble in a matter of moments. I speak from experience.

I used to live in a house at Riccall near Selby that was haunted and had apparently had the priest round to ward away the spirits. When sleeping at night I used to have the sensation of a cat purring sat on my chest, we didn't have a cat and nor had I attended the Hare and Hounds 😂
I had no knowledge of the goings on at Stocksbridge bypass but have driven on there many times in the early hours and felt uncomfortable there many times???

We had a similar experience in our family home for 15 years on Broom Lane in Rotherham, far too many things happened to 4 of us at different times but we all experienced the same thing but at totally different times and the same family ghost that was apparently my Grandads twin brother who died when he was about 5 years old.

Great video. I loved the ghost stories. I have travelled the Stocksbridge bypass once and the only thing I experienced was the sound of hydraulic breaks next to my car as I drove but no lorry was there. The other story I have was from a friend who travelled from Manchester back to Sheffield one evening with her boyfriend and she said she saw a monk at the side of road floating above the ground. Neither of them spoke until they got into Sheffield and asked ‘did you see the same thing as me?’ which they replied ‘yes’. 😮This was around 1988 so after it was built. I always travelled the road above from Huddersfield to Sheffield when visiting my Mum. More stories please. Love them. ❤

Snap ! I think this is what happened when I was 19 and was taken to visit Bergen -Belsen, all my hair was standing on end.
Same years later when I was in a car being driven past Stonehenge, all my hair was standing on end & I had goosebumps
all over and we were only on the road driving nearby. Belsen just had a feeling of evil about it : I felt I could reach out and
grab a handful of it. Stonehenge infinitely better but perhaps mysterious stuff happened there, not bad.

I used to manage an old working mans club in a village a few miles away from me, it was well known for being a bit creepy and there was stories about 2 spirits in the place. This was 2006 late November time and id gone round early to get the heating on before opening up at 7pm. The cellar to this place was basically in the big function room and i needed to get a couple of crates of budweiser. As i got to the cellar i could see out on the function room as the shutters where up, i noticed a light on in 1 of the dressing rooms at the side of the stage and didnt give it a 2nd thought. As i came out of the cellar with the crates i thought id heard someone coughing coming from the function room, as i walked to the bar i could quite clearly hear footsteps going across the dance floor but no one was there? Then the light that was on just went off. It startled me a bit as i was the only 1 in the building. About an hour later i went into the function room, id more or.less.convinced myself that the place was an old building and id maybe heard creaking and the light that went off maybe the bulb had blown. I then walked into this dressing room and tried the light switch and the light came on, that in itself frightened me, whatever or whoever i had heard in the function room turned that light off.

@@bythecurb we also got told by a lady that has medium work abilities that 2 sporits haunt the place, a small child in the ladies toilets (loads of reports from.wpmen saying they could hear a child giggling in the loo) and an eldery man that frequents the big function room. I tend to be half a believer and half a sceptic, but having witnessed what i did that night tells me there has to be something there

He pooped his pants because he was leaning on a dry stone wall resting next to a road and could see for miles in the Moonlight when he heard footsteps coming down the road. When he looked gingerly over the wall there was no one there and he could see the gravel moving with the footsteps going right in front of him. He got home rather quickly and even left his Rabbits behind lol Wonder if he still got the Ferret back home lol

I live in Perth Western Australia,I bought a house in 2009 at an auction where a 19 old boy had hung himself in the back garden,a few months into renovating I put my 2 daughters to bed and at 10.30pm I looked down the passage way to the bedrooms and saw my eldest run from the bathroom into her sisters room.I walked down and quietly said “Freya come out now” after no response I looked into Freya’s room and she was in her own bed asleep and I knew because she used to grind her teeth.Certain incidents over the years like coffee cups moving and bedroom doors opening prompted me to sell the property,so I did a quick makeover of the back garden.Whilst digging in a drain pipe I hit something soft with my shovel I moved the soil away with my hands and found a ruck sack containing a child’s school uniform with what looked like blood on the trainers 😱I immediately rang the police cos the house had a history of drugs etc.The police turned up promptly may I add and confirmed it could possibly be blood. They asked me to cease renovating for 5 days until they got lab results back.5 days came and went so I filled in the hole and put the house on the market,it sold in 3 days and I heard nothing back of the police.I still to this day believe that girl I saw in the passage way needed help in some way and I think about her on a regular basis.😢

In 1973, I and my little brother stayed and my big brothers house. I was 11, col.was9. It was an old terraced house with outside bog. Decrepit really. We stayed up late one saturday and watched horro film on bbc2. Big brother freddie was alseep in bed. Col needed a wee but was scared, cos he said there was an old lady in the kitchen. I said dont be soft. There was a hatch between living room and kitchen, so you could see into the kitchen. Sure enough there was an old lady shuffling from side to side in the kichen. I thought it might be jackie's gran (sister in law) told col not to be daft, but was scared really. Plucked up courage to open kitchen door, there was no one there! Next morning, told big brother freddie about old lady. Expecting him to say his wifes gran was over, he said " oh youve seen the old woman then!" . Apparently he saw her from time to time. According to him, nieghbours said the old woman who lived there haunted the place and kids had seen her peeking out when the house had been empty!

Hi guys. Tother story happened in 1995. Rented 2 bed house in egton st hull. On first night, me n janet were rudely awakened at around 2am. It sounded like we were being burgled by nutters! We could hear furnture being thrown around, and the castors on the couch and chairs. It was terryfying. This went on for about 5 minutes. The houe was semi detached, with one nieghbour, geoff who was infirm and in his 80s. Stood on the corner of a terrace. I plucked up the courage to pick up my lads baseball bat he'd left, and slowly crept down the stairs. When i reached the living room door, the racket was still continuing. I pushed the door open with some force and the noise stopped. When i stepped in, all the furniture was pushed into the centre of the living room. Carpets were rolled away from the walls. Even the telly was laid on its front. No one there. I quickly checked the doors, and found them locked, including windows. Janet mame down and we both looked at one another. If we hadnt both heard and witnessed it, we would never have believed it. Geoff next door heard it, and thought a fight was occurring. It never happened again, but from then, we always felt we were nkt alone, whenever we were in the bathroom. We did some research, and it was very interesting. Where our kitchen stood. It was a extention. Had origionally stood where first house down terrace stood. Hull was bombed terribly in 1941. Whole families were killed in the street, and the area in general. Flowers are laid every year even now. People who lived tbere after me, told me they had experience similar. And all spoke about being watched in the bathroom . And having items found balancing in odd places. Thing missing then appearing. We tried to get most haunted to investigate in the late 90's. Everyone who lived at 43 egton st usually dont stay very long. When my lads used to stay, they were afraid of the back bedroom.

In the 90's my wife and I went a walk which was featured in Country Walking magazine, and set off from the Danby Moors Centre, N.Yorks on a circular walk.
Near the end of the walk, the path took us over the moor, next to a stone circle. The instructions warned not to enter the circle as it was bad luck. I walked on the stones at the edge of the circle.
When we got back to the car park, I put the key in the boot of the car to open it and it felt as though it was melting; it didn't open but I was able to pull it out of the lock. The key was now spiral shaped, as though it had been in a furnace. Unfortunately it was the same key for the other doors so we had to call out the AA. All the AA mans efforts to get us into the car failed so we had to be towed back to Barnsley!
