One of the best teacher I have seen in my 48 years. If we had teachers like you in school we would be all geniuses today. Please, more photo-bashing. One day my brain will remember all these instructions and tips.
The problem with adding an overall layer of mist is the constant or not fitting density, which makes it look like an unnatural milky spray. In real life parts of the mist will be observed at a direct 90 dg angle and other areas nearby at e.g. 60 dg - this will make the first area look thinner and less dense than the second giving the realistic look. Such an effect when added superficially must follow the topography - so the only way to do it right is to add smaller areas with different density, facilitating the observer's view.
Outstanding tutorial. You provided some tips I hadn't seen on anyone else's videos. I've have it saved for a reference but I used these techniques extensively today. Earned a Like, Sub and All.
You create the BEST Affinity Photo videos. I like the composition themed ones best but they're all really, really good. I like that they're presented at an intermediate (or higher) level yet are still clearly explained and very easy to follow along with. A hot cup of tea, a pair of headphones, and I'm good to go while I revel in your work. I appreciate the time and effort it takes to create these tutorials.
Hope you get on OK with the tutorial, Dennis. I’ve just done a 45 minute session on the main Affinity channel which covers compositing in even more detail, you may find that helpful as well!
James, that is amazing!!, I’ve only just started out with Affinity and use affinity revolution for my ‘beginners journey’ then use you for inspiration and to set myself a goal for about 10 years time when I may, just, be as competent as you 😂. I suspect we’re in the same part of the world too as I saw some clips from you in N Notts? I’m up near Retford. Keep them coming James, love your delivery btw.
I have yet to see one of your videos that is not extremely informative.... I just wish I could keep them all right in the front of memory!! HA! Seriously, I think you have the best Affinity channel on the planet. The material and presentation quality are top shelf. Glad to have found you James!!
I watched an embarrassingly large amount of the video before I realized this wasn’t photoshop. Luckily everything applies. Photo composites are one of my favorite things do do digitally and you’ve got me thinking I’ve been doing them all wrong. Amazing tips!
James I love your tutorials very well explained I love the way you take the time to actually show us what you are doing. Im knew to Affinity Photo can't wait till I can do the things that your doing. Well Done
James your examples really help bridge the efficiency gap I am always looking for. As an architectural/interiors photographer compositing and layering are essential in my post workflow. This is just the right skills level for me but can always be pushed to get to the next level. An architectural and/or interiors example would be a nice appreciative change from your previous examples :)
Thanks for commenting! I do a bit of archviz comp work as part of my job (researching workflows etc)-for my next creative session on the main Affinity channel I was thinking of putting together a composite from Blender renders which might scratch that itch!
This is absolutely amazing! Can't wait to buy Affinity and try this out with night sky photos, among others. Do you have any tutorials for night sky composites i.e. a foreground/land and background/sky? I guess the techniques will be somewhat the same as this video. I struggled with Photoshop and would do most of it manually. This refine option in Affinity looks fantastic. Anyway, thanks for the great tutorial.
These are great James. I was wondering if there were plans to do some videos on some of the more complex masking/alpha methods, particularly using channels and Apply Image/Equations, which seems to be the equivalent of Photoshops' Calculations, but seemingly even less user friendly?
Fantastic tutorial. Love watching you teach, I learn a ton and your clarity and focus is really calming. Thanks

Thanks Fred, really appreciate your comment 👍
Thanks James. I'm just starting on my Affinity journey, and loved compositing in photoshop. Your tutorial gives me hope
A half hour of entertainment with a master. I'll be saving this tutorial in hopes of understanding the reasoning for all the moves.

I just discovered this software. It looks really powerfull and may be good for me who is trying to live adobe.

Awesome, James. Thank you!
You’re welcome!
Brilliant! amazing video!
Thanks for doing this! I enjoy seeing compositing work, and maybe I'll do some one day! I have all the Affinity Products.
Wow! Just wow.
Thanks, hope you find it useful!
Thank you for such an great informative video!
No worries, thank you for watching!
Superbe démonstration ! Merci beaucoup, i love Affinity :-)
wow! this is magic!!!!
Excellent!!!!
Excellent!
Grande James!!!!
Terrific. Thanks so much 😊
You should post more compositing. All we can find is Photoshop, it is once to see some affinity ones for a change... Cheers

Can you suggest why, when I select almost any brush other than a basic one, the Hardness setting is greyed out?
I'm new to photo editing. i don't like using a keyboard to select things. can I select from a drop down using my mouse?
This is brilliant James! Guess what I’m doing today! 👍🏻
Thanks Richard!
Thanks. It would be better if you linked the pics so we could follow along.
Can these exercises be done in iPad version ? That will be very useful for Affinity photo on iPad . Thanks
Are these images available to practice with?
brilliant explanation - where do you get the first smoke / mist images that you overlaid?
Hi, these were all from photobash.org - they have tons of photobashing packs of various locations around the world, and lots of cutout packs as well
Can you please edit the same images but on the iPad version of Affinity please.
If you slow down when explaining complex things (like when choosing new layer on new layer with mask), it will be easier to follow.
You can slow the playback speed in the settings, or use video speed controller like I do which lets you control it from the keyboard.
I subscribe
Too hard to follow for a beginner. Affinity Revolution is not as advanced, but they slow it down and are much easier to follow.
uh, yeah, i could do that
A great educational tutorial... but "quick compositing"?... not really :-)
