      Rich, there are several ways to be successful with Steelhead. Nick just chose one of the hardest techniques to start with. "smiley face"

    Nice vid!I get so pumped when you post a new vid! One question, do you know where discovery park is in sacramento? If you do do you have any tips for someone going out this weekend? my grandfather insists on going for steelhead but i keep telling him its over. But what about stripper and or largemouth what are they doing this time of year. If you were going to go out there what would you do?

    Up in Washington State, (where Steelhead is king) we had a lot of spit hooks after hookups also. It's a Steelhead thing. We would be using conventional gear with eggs and spinners, and they would still spit 'em half the time. Great video and MAD props to those "Fly Guys".

    Would you ever or have you ever considered going fishing for steelhead or salmon in New York. There are some great rivers and fishing there like the Salmon River, Sandy Creek, and Burt Dam and a lot more. Would like to see you go up there

    Being so or too technical with fly fishing, scares a lot of newbies away from the sport of flying fishing, and I'm a fly fishermen.

    Does using a boat allow you to drift through private land? Or is it public land on the lower American? I'm always confused about this, and it makes it hard to plan trips. Thanks for the video.

    Has centerpinning for steelhead taken off in California yet? It is very popular in the streams and rivers entering the Great Lakes. It is by no means fly fishing in the traditional sense, or for that matter, any sense. It is just a a long 12' - 15' flexible rod with either a fixed reel seat or sliding rings, a reel that looks like a really big fly reel but it has at least one, and sometimes two, ball bearings that the spool spins on effortlessly. You add a float, a couple of bobber stops, a couple of micro Raven swivels, a shot string, and your choice of fly or single eggs. The speed of the current pulls line off of the spool and you can get drag free floats of 100' long if you want an no one is below you.

      My buddy Ray does it and has for 25 years or so. He met and had a few John Milner custom reels made. He's a badass steelheader and I'm a 5% er. Ray's a 1% er... He cringes every time he sees another pinner on the AR. There are about 7 that I know of and only Ray and one other guy from New York are veterans at it...

    Don't take the show on the road Nick. There are tons of fishing shows in the Midwest and East side. Your show is legit cause no one does CA. If these guys wanna see larger steelhead all you gotta do is hit the Eel River, trinity, Klamath, etc. doing a great job doing local waters.

    • @InformativeFisherman
      @InformativeFisherman  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you! I did the Trinity for the steelhead basics episode and got a few big ones. I had one around 10lbs hooked on the American but she came unpegged.

  • @matttroutman4515

    I've never fished your rivers for steelhead but why is it that these fish you are calling steelhead look pretty much exactly like resident, non migratory, rainbows I catch pretty much anywhere in Montana or back east on the Delaware River. The steelhead I catch in Lake Erie creeks are dime bright when they enter the creeks and when they get colored up they get very dark not like these lighter colored fish with pink stripes.

      Not sure what you're getting at, but it's illegal to keep wild steelhead. Hatchery steelhead I believe you can only keep two.
