      It can. And its stupid on the drs part. Its probably the most masked thing because society makes such a huge deal of how important it is, you learn to at least fake it somehow. It is difficult to try to completely unmask for evaluation, but is almost necessary with a lot of these drs. If you don't have obvious overt symptoms its like they can't tell.

    5:31 Helped me to a massive breakthrough about my bio mom and I's relationship. I've always felt like she never loved the real me, felt like she never really knew me and who I was, only the perfect temperate "girl" she conditioned me to be. Most of all I never really understood how she told me (around the age of 15 too), I was changing into something she didn't like, when at the time I felt like I was discovering myself. I've been masking my entire life, and it started unmasking all the way back then, before I even knew the word for it. My bio mom didn't love "me", she loved the mask that I formed to conform to her standards of "normal". And as soon as I started to unmask, she wanted to change me. It's heart breaking and cathartic because I can finally describe what happened in my own terms, without the hateful rejection she gave me for growing into my own person. I wasn't turning into a monster, I wasn't "turning bad", I was just becoming myself, a person she doesn't love. I'm 20 years old and I finally understand and I finally feel free. I can't thank these creators enough, they've given me the tools to get to this breakthrough and it has changed how I veiw myself and my relationship with my bio mom.

      @@Lillyluvsanime It's more bittersweet for me. I've long since accepted the fact my bio mom and I won't have a healthy relationship, but now I know that I'm not really a bad person for not being "perfect". I'm an imperfect, and specifically in this context, an autistic person and I'm finally coming to terms with this and learning to love myself as I am.

    • @Lillyluvsanime
      @Lillyluvsanime 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@YourPenguinFriendMilo yeah. I've been, over the last 4.5 years, discovering my own autism and getting my mom to understand has been difficult but in a different way.
      I think the part that makes me sad about your story is that everyone deserves the unconditional love of their parent(s). Sad for you and sad for your mom that she can't see past who she wanted/expected you to be and now has to miss out on who I'm sure is an incredible person.
      With my mom, it's mostly just been trying to convince her that I'm not being a hypochondriac or letting my imagination get away from me. She's slowly warmed to the idea that the person she's always known me to be (who has always been pretty openly a weirdo) is an autistic person, and not just "hashtag-quirky, lol".

      I had that, I have trouble processing things at the exact time and my mom is bipolar and hated when I struggled with things, she told me she missed when I wasn’t a horrible person, lazy, ignoring her, hurting my brother (my brother had behaviour problems ((he might also be autistic)) he would scream when he was annoyed and my mom would take that to mean I was hitting him. My mom has lost custody of me, my brother, and my sister, she was very abusive. She always said she supported my autism, but I found out later a few things, she told my dad he shouldn’t be allowed to see me because he was autistic, she didn’t vaccinate me incase I got autism, and she even stopped me going to primary school when I was 5 because they said I might be autistic. She got so angry, and I think she also was worried about social workers finding things out (I never went to school, and I also wasn’t allowed outside by myself. I rarely saw anyone. I was 14 when she lost custody, and she wasn’t gonna let me out till I was 16) when I got diagnosed, she’d say things like “my Facebook autism research didn’t say anything about kids doing that, you have no exuse.”

    OMG THE TIKTOK ABOUT AUTISM DIAGNOSIS IS SO TRUE.
    Okay so long story short, my little brother is diagnosed with autism and I’m diagnosed with generalized anxiety disorder (i’m afab and that’s important to know that). My mother sometimes says that she feels like i may be autistic and that we should maybe do a diagnosis (and i start to feel like maybe i am) BUT my therapist (who is specialized in neurodivergences) said that she only see G.A.D. at some point.
    But the thing is that researches about autism was mainly made on amab people and so it’s hard for an afab person to get a diagnosis because of that and since i’ll get diagnosed for another disorder (that has nothing to do with a neurodivergent disorder) i can’t ask for an autism diagnosis. Anyways, the « short » was useless because i made it long.

      my mom tried to get me a diagnosis around a year and a half ago, and most of my family has ADHD, the doctors didnt exactly say i have autism, but they also didnt say i didnt have autism, my mom told me not long ago the doctors said its "not autism, but on the autism spectrum"

      I don't know, if this helps, but my brother has been in a similar situation. I have the autism diagnosis, and when we talked about how/why I got it, we realized he has the exact same problems and hypersensitivities - he just copes in a different way than I do. So he went to a psychiatrist himself to be evaluated in the hope that once he's diagnosed he'd be able to claim some protection at work. Things like changing his work place to where it's not as busy and loud as where he currently was. Inexplicably, they concluded he has gad. Once he had this in his medical record, no other doc / therapist would consider submitting him to autism testing.
      One time he asked why, and they explained that autism is not a causative diagnosis, but a label diagnosis. Basically this means, you get the autism diagnosis when you have no other diagnosis that fits the majority of your symptoms.
      But the good part is: just because you're not diagnosed, doesn't mean you can't get good therapy. Like, if you have specific problems you want to address in therapy, then a good therapist, autism or not, will try to figure out solutions with you.
      My brother tried iirc 3 different therapists (one session each, just to see if the chemistry fits), and once he found one who he could communicate well with, he got a lot of the same therapy steps as I did.
      For example, social competence training and exposure training, he got a doctor's note that gave him the protection at work he was looking for etc.
      Long story short: if you have the option, try a different therapist or psychiatrist. You may not get the diagnosis, but eventually you will find someone who can help you with whatever problem(s) you have.

      Fellow afab here, diagnosed with GAD as a late-teen, but convinced that I'm probably autistic as well. I was briefly tested and medicated for add/adhd (don't remember which or if they even said), but because I had so many other issues with depression and anxiety, they didn't think the medicine was helping and took me off it. So while right now I can't actually afford a diagnosis anyway, I probably would experience the same thing (which is one reason I don't want to even bother trying)

    • @jvseventeen
      @jvseventeen ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Same. Eye contact was presented to me (when I was a child) as a societal necessity. I watched a lot of CSI/NCIS type shows and they said frequently that looking away while talking to someone could mean they're lying, or nervous about what they're saying.
      I've got massive anxiety so im always nervous about everything i say, but I also have a huge amount of pressure from this idea of "don't draw attention to yourself, be as 'normal' as possible" that plays on loop in my brain.
      For me, I make eye contact to seem like everyone else. To draw less attention to myself, to mimic others and to present proper social cues when they become necessary.

    • @Slaaneshy_Concubine
      @Slaaneshy_Concubine ปีที่แล้ว

      In my case they diagnosed my with anxiety as a child. Despite me being bad an eye contact and not being able to focus. Now after researching and reflecting I realized I had pretty bad symptoms of both autism and ADHD throughout my life. I got none of those two even though occupational therapists suspected autism.
      Autism and ADHD seem to be the black sheep among diagnoses. They'd rather diagnose anything else and don't don't realize that anxiety is very common for ND people.

  • @lillianrhiannon
    @lillianrhiannon 2 ปีที่แล้ว +18

    I've never been diagnosed autistic, but either my anxiety disorder presents similarly, including self stimming(i pick at my fingers, and fidget a lot), sensory issues(bright light can border on physical pain, certain noises make me want to stab my ears out with pencils because they feel like nails on a chalkboard to me, and certain foods and food textures make me nauseous), and a distinct ability and subconscious urge to copy someone's tone of voice and, if I can see them, copy their posture, or I am high-functioning autistic, which my therapist did say was possible. The irony? Either way the diagnosis goes, I grew up the child of special education teachers. If I am in fact autistic, they should have been the first to catch it. But my mother, the one who only let her certification lapse a few years ago, is the one the most resistant to the possibility. Despite the fact that she has seen me mid anxiety attack/meltdown, when I am curled in a ball with my hands over my ears and eyes clenched shut because my senses are overwhelmed. Simply because I don't show some of the symptoms. Namely the eye contact one. But given the world we live in, I don't generally have to look people in the eye for long. I don't like to for long periods. I tend to start to blush and get anxious. Unless it's with kids. Them I can look in the eye.

      MANTIS INFODUMP!!!!
      my favorite species is the spiked flower mantis. From their first to third molt, they are black, resembling ants, and they move their arms to look like antennae. Once they get to around their fourth molt, they start to have more extreme changes aside from getting bigger. They start to turn shades of purples and pinks, and the spikes become more visible. When they get to their 6th(ish) molt, they begin to lose the spines. Once they are fully grown (7th most for males and 9th for females) they are usually a light shade of pink with multicolored patterns on their wings. Some of them can have purple eyes, and they dance with the wind to mimic flowers drifting in the wind. From what I've seen, theyre a bigger mantis species.
      fun fact: they have a special ear on their abdomen almost especially for hearing bats. To avoid getting eaten while they fly, if they hear one they'll spiral downwards until reaching the ground.
      Also, I think its dumb that people don't think I'm autistic because i can rattle on and on and on and on about reasons why I'm autistic and then they go "nuh uh!! Youre not a little white boy who hyperfixates on trains and has frequent meltdowns!!" And its SO. INFURIATING.

    i used to have a shirt that had a heart emblem of the same texture shown at 5:23 and I would do that all the time until my family said "it's annoying, please stop". that's one of my few memories of before I started masking legitimately anything. most of my memories of what I liked are either because I was masking or no longer existent. and then there's a small handful of memories of things that my family said/hinted was annoying or incorrect one (1) time and I never did it again.

    @autistic.mama's clip at 5:30 made me ugly cry. I'm finally beginning to realize just how long I've been masking and just how much of myself I stuff down every day just for a "seat at the grown up table". I'm 41 years old.

    okay ive been binging these comps bces ive been feeling bad and ive been feeling bad because i recently had a couple fights with my younger sister
    now that ive seen a few videos and had a few examples everything lines up and i believe i had a few sensory meltdowns and reacted aggressively both times, making the situation worse. ive tried putting up boundaries for years and stating what i do and dont like to her numerous times but every time it seems to go right in one ear and out the other and she triggers another meltdown.
    commenting this because i want comfort and some “youll be okay”s

      Hi! I've been having sensory meltdowns my whole life and didn't know what it was. As a baby I tried to stop nursing, because my mom would talk non-stop while feeding me and I hated it. Just finding these things out now and it's going to get better.
      You'll be ok too!
      Sending good wishes~

    WAIT JUST UNKNOWINGLY SAYING WORDS COUNTS AS STIMMING? BRO I JUST KEEP REPEATING THIS ONE PART OF A SONG I LIKE AND START GOING “oyasumii oyasumii” OR HUMMING A ND I DIDNT REALIZE IT WAS A STIM! I ALSO SOMETIMES DO 👉 WHEN I ASK A QUESTION

    Clicked the video instantly punched in the gut with feels. Fireflies has been my favorite song literally since I can remember. The beep boops have always been my favorite musical stim. And you're telling me the creator made it that way, because of the same reasons I love it?? God do I love that song so much more now.
    (3:00) Didn't realize I did this too. I started doing it as soon as I read that lmao. And rubbing my fingers together is my primary stim, so it's funny that was immediately after.

    I think my first special interest was fiction books. I never thought about it that way. But I was very obsessive about it. When I read on tests that autistic people don’t like fiction I thought well that’s definitely not me. Buttt I mean I would dress up as the characters and go to midnight book release parties, read the book again and again, find out about the author and track them. I finally got to see Anne Rices house. Also nature, but especially gardening/houseplants, and especially propagation. I still have a couple propagation methods to try (like layering!) but I can’t wait to get into hybridization. My third one is trauma. Once I realized I had PTSD I researched everything about it.
    The thing is, I just thought every body did that. It’s weird to me that people don’t.

    You know, every time I tell someone that I think I have adhd and autism (I got assessed last month and I’m waiting on results) the first thing they say is “but you’re always so still!” And I’m like “dude, first of all, my leg has been going a million miles an hour this whole time, it’s just small enough movements that you don’t notice it, my fingers have been rubbing against each other and I’ve been picking at the skin around my nails, my teeth have been grinding and chomping, I’ve popped all my fingers at least 3 times in 1 hour, and I haven’t looked at the same thing for more than 5 seconds my gaze has been moving around so much. What do you mean I’m so still???”

    Heck the scratching phone thinking just reminded me of when I'd get those hologram card things like that, when I was growing up there were spiderman ones that came with cereal and some point, and I'd just love scratching it like that ahah autistic memory unlocked
