Great drummer, I didn't know how messed up he was but behind the kit he was a human metronome no matter what condition he was in. There are so many sober (and wasted!) drummers that can only dream of having his talent. Frank Beard has it, in a major way.

Frank's playing reminds me of Ringo Starr's playing in the Beatles... He plays tight, he doesn't overplay, and he is the perfect drummer for the band.

    • @briankt123

I agree wholeheartedly with that observation. I was just listening to "Heard it on the X" on the Bose system in the car, very loud, multiple times, because it is short track, and I love it. While Billy's playing is exceptional, and him and Dusty trading lines back and forth is awesome, Frank's drumming and cymbal playing in my opinion, is the icing on the cake for that song; and so many others. 1975 there with that song. Fast forward to 1983 and the beginning beat to "Gimme all your lovin" is unmistakable due to Frank's playing. Very much like Ringo, and another comes to mind in Charlie Watts.

He came over and met my wife and I in 89 or 90 . I met him through a friend that used to pinstripe ZZ Top’s guitars . We had a model car club and heard Frank collected model race cars. He stayed for over an hour looking at all the miniatures I had painted. He was just a down to earth person that was big into collecting. He said his wife doesn’t like it that he collects models. It was interesting to hear that from him. He was a stickler for detail and perfectionist in models. The only thing he mentioned about touring the world is their was no place as good as the United States. I know him in a completely different way then most people. If he read this comment he would remember who I am. He couldn’t forget the collection he saw.

A bit of a story about Frank. ZZ Top was playing in Ottawa. My brothers landlord always grew some of the best weed available in the world, period. Someone that was working with the band in Ottawa knew this fact. Frank and the worker showed up at my brothers landlords place, it was a duplex, and purchased some weed. After they left the landlord ran over to my brothers place to see if he had any ZZ Top albums. Of course, my brother did, and Franks face was in most of the liners of the albums, and it was indeed him that was there.

Their individual names were public knowledge. I remember thinking if they shaved and took off the dark glasses and hats, they could still go out in public and be anonymous. Nice to see them sharing what some of their struggles were. Some entertainers avoid that because they believe fans want the entertainment and the escape, not to go there and hear about real life problems! Anyway, it humanizes them.

But yeah man ZZ Top has always been at the top of that list more than and now but always dug them and God bless Dusty Hill and I always really admired Frank Beard,Billy and Dusty.

I've seen ZZ Top six times. I had no idea that any of them had drug problems. If you're that rich and famous, drugs are going to be there, and if you practice moderation, you can dabble in them, and walk away from them. But if you're weak, they'll run all over you. Having said that, this guy is an awesome drummer. He was perfect each time I saw him perform.

ZZTOP, like ACDC, were not the type of band to air their dirty laundry out in public.... different times for sure but they were professional and kept personal shit at home. One of the many things I liked about ACDC and ZZTOP.

It's not about being weak or strong. I don't gamble. I could easily walk away from a casino. If you love the way a drug feels more than the next person you will do more of it. If you don't like how alcohol makes you feel you aren't going to drink it and it doesn't make you a strong willed person for turning it down. And as far as moderation goes- everyone is different.

    • @taze317
