I love her voice and her psychopathic expressions. It's so good when the singer can sing and move and do facial expressions at the same time. Also she looks like a fusion of the Joker and Raven from the Teen Titans.
Pamina = my friend/sibling The Queen = me. The knife = 1) the answer booklet we 'borrowed' from the teacher, 2) candy from the supermarket, 3) the hardest part of the group assignment, 4) the package of cookies we stole from our parents, 5) the invalid train ticket, 6) etc.
This is the scariest Queen of the Night I've heard. The frenzied, higher-than-usual tempo augments her well-acted insane mannerisms, and the makeup works so well! Also, it's amazing that she manages this velocity with aplomb. Brava!
This is my absolute favorite rendition. She actually looks threatening, and it makes the staccato seem like maniacal laughter which is the only way, to me, it makes sense.
I love how she looks utterly psychopathic while singing this song. Works really well for the character. The set and costumes look like they came out of the original Power Rangers series.
Does anyone else get chills around 2:03 when she just grits her teeth and smiles while continuing to sing? I've seen a few of her performances of this now and it seems to be one of her favorite things to do. It's so deranged and it just makes me feel so afraid for my own life, it's so cool! It really captures the mood of the aria.
2:03 this part got me like, ok. The shape of mouth changed but she was able to maintain those notes with her own version using decrescendo. Maaan! It looks waaay more scary. And I like it.
Absolutely wonderful rendition of an extremely difficult song to sing. Many have failed, but this woman nails it. Forget the costumes and listen to one of the most demanding roles in music.
Erika Miklosa was a pentathlete as a teenager and sang a lot. When she was heard by a person that told her she should study opera. She has the power and control needed for this most difficult part is superb. The greatest Queen of the Night I've heard.
Musically speaking, I'm all for a fresh, new, innovative approach which, in this particular case works miracles... But visually sometimes these "modern" productions can be completely pointless, unfortunately.
Oh, I disagree about the production style. To me it caught the feel of 'Metropolis', and other early (ironically, silent!) movies. Dealing with that level of obsession - anything works visually, and well at that!
Every other version where the daughter does NOT cover her ears will seem weak and pathetic now. It's exactly what would happen in real life when the banshee queen starts shrieking at you like that! Great directing.
I really don't get the hate this production gets. I accept that it's personal taste and all but to me it's all very well done. Minkowski's conducting fits, Miklosa's characterization, technique and acting is top level and the set design collaborates with the storyline of the aria. Pamina is simply helpless, swinging without direction, has no say whatsoever in this whole shabang her mother puts her through under the strict authority. I say it's a great visual representation and a much more than adequate modernization put together , which I find extremely rare in contemporary efforts to modernize an opera.
@Kasia Exactly. Plus, those not familiar with opera who look at this will watch with already formed negative ideas about opera, see this, and walk away with their negative perceptions confirmed. To them opera is an art for elites only. So these productions are not only disgusting for those who already like opera, but for newcomers too. These productions have the ability to kill opera. I wish directors would stop with the Regietheater garbage.
Well.... the production is one thing, but that singing is in a class of its own. Crystal clear, virtuostic, fabulous tone and just stunning. I am in awe.
OMG -- Ms. Miklosa may be the best QOTN yet, vocally she nailed it, she's certainly convincing (not to mention scary). As for everything else, don't get me started.
This is hands down my favorite performance of this aria I have seen anywhere. She is head and shoulders above everyone else I've seen. No one else lands the "crazy", they sound too pretty and delicate. The speed she takes it at makes it clear those repeated Cs and As are her laughing/cackling. Not just some random incongruous coloratura that makes no sense when you consider what she is singing about in this scene.
Her vocal range and tempo are par excellence. Close your eyes you fool and travel to where you once were. This lady is just putting on a "demonstration" as to how truly incredible she really is. Do not hate, just enjoy the "spectacle" as Mozart originally intended. Amen.
2:04 she did that part seemingly so easy, she bearly open the mouth. In contrast with other singers, who often need different positions. Brilliant voice and acting.

Unexpected tempo, but still one of the best performances I've heard for this piece! I would have loved to see the full opera like that, despite the "strange" outfits...
