1:05 the new setup
10:04 Let's actually put it together
11:16 How did it turn out? - วิทยาศาสตร์และเทคโนโลยี
Guys my 1U servers are at the proper angle according to the builders code here in Texas. It is to prevent snow, ammunition, and Whataburger build up on the top which could cause the servers to collapse. I truly expected better out of you guys...smh
Can’t believe these noobs don’t know about the ammunition build up here in Texas. Fantastic code compliance sir.
🤣🤣🤣🤣
you're definitely one of the worst tech bros on TH-cam😂😂😂
@@chimpo131 thanks!
Dual PSUs are not only for separate circuits. Dual PSUs can run in redundant mode OR in load balanced mode. I would advise keeping both of them in. I am especially fond of load balanced mode because it will distribute the draw between the 2 PSUs and you can have some nice efficiency AND enjoy LOWER load on a single power port of your PDU or Standard power strip/bar. Plus, if a single PSU fails in a long-term deployment, you will have fail over to the other working PSU so that you will have zero downtime. This paired with a nice battery back up and you will have an EXCELLENT power set up.
Interesting…I’ll have to revisit this then!
@@RaidOwl Also... this is like a $1,500 chassis right?
@@greenprotag Yup, £1700 in the UK, ouch.
This
Yep. I use dual PSU whenever possible. My fiber MikroTik switch has it and been using it despite my house only have one power circuit. It still provides redundant power to the switch if one PSU should fail.
those 3 tilted 1U servers hurt my OCD soul haha
You aren't joking but par for the course with those devices. Your choices are to let them dangle, put a shelf under them, put another server under them with 4 post rails.
@@drkavnger99 ya my sophos(pfsense) gateway was the same way i ended up putting a server under it. i think its cause ive seen some rack ears just sheer off
makes me as an INF Engineer cringe but i understand at the same time
Same here hahaha
The Oculink vs SAS explanation helps clarify one detail people often miss, which is Oculink is not a protocol. Oculink is just a PCIe lane/s in cable form.
9:35 OOOOooooo...... AHH!!!! :)
For the Redundant Power, may consider one to the house circuit, the other to a UPS with a 'Auto-shutdown' script at power loss, since you are not HA at home.
A word of caution about backplanes that support both SaS and SATA: _apparently_, SaS drives use a lower voltage than SATA drives and the power is negotiated with the drive spins up. This means that if you mix-and-match SaS with SATA on the same HBA, you might end up dumping too much power into the SaS drives. In this instance, the expander throws a lot of unanswered questions into the mix.
I learned this from just a passing comment on a podcast where the speaker wasn't particularly technical so I wouldn't count on the above being entirely correct, but I had 16 SaS drives fail at the same time for what seemed like mysterious reasons, but the 4 that were on their own HBA were fine. So my experience aligns.
SAS drives lower voltage than Sata.
Good point
It is in fact a beautiful server. But please some rails for the cluster!!!!
If you tilt your head they’re straight
@@RaidOwl i never go straight is against my religion 🌈lol!!!!

Redundants aren't just for separate circuits. PSUs fail, especially for servers. Having spare isnt the worst thing in the world
Right, I have one SPU on the Grid power supply and the other one on my UPS
nice setup. i am working on starting the same kind of setup.
Not a bad use of $1600 for just the chassis.... Sad to hear you weren't able to take advantage of some of the more fun stuff on it though. Maybe time for a motherboard upgrade? :D
ouh woah! truly amazing! (9:35)
glad to see someone use some inwin hardware, I've been using their mini itx case for a while and have been really happy with it. Looking to upgrade to one of their pedestal cases since I don't have space for a rack
8:23 - I would still try and look at what kind of connection they have, and also simply try if it works with minisas, it pretty much looks like a standard dual path sas setup for two slots that would have 4 electrical sas connections, which is exactly what single minisas provides - i.e. it shoudl work with sata just fine while directly connected with minisasa cable
good thing about two PSUs is, you can't leave one unplugged, but mounted, and in case of failure, you won't waste time finding another compatible piece online xD
Why did you install the drives BEFORE racking the server? 4U chassis is heavy and awkward enough without all those front loaded drives!
Cuz I’m a big strong boy
@@RaidOwl Cuz you were sick and not thinkin'?
How did you get a hold of this chassis? I am looking for a 2u version and the website doesnt give a price.
how did you get a hold of this chassis, the website doesnt even let you get a quote.
living the dream man. good job.
I thought of something like this before but then I thought of the noise and power consumption... plus I don't really need it... then I lost interest. 😅 That still looks cool though! 👍
For the dual power supplies, you could run one off each UPS in the bottom of the rack.
Big true
Or connect one to mains and one to UPS which is what I do with all my servers
Can't find this chassis anywhere, where'd you pick it up?
Do you have a ups? You could connect one psu to the ups for safe shutdown in a power outage. To be honest I know power outages are rare now a days
Which website that you buy this case love it please let me know
I'm having trouble finding it as well
Great video Brett!
Wife coming in for that clutch help 🍷
I run proxmox on that hp server planning either to add and/or upgrade to HP dl380 gen9 with flexlom 40gbe dual qsfp+ and Nvidia tesla k40
some times server manufactures require you to use both psu's like my HP dl380p g8 which runs a nvidia tesla k20 using the gpu riser kit 128gb ram 2x Intel xeon e5-2650v2 mellanox connectx-3 dual 40Gbps qsfp+
Make sure to update the firmware on that 9500-8i , earlier firmwares have some performance bugs.
Beaides the 7302 anything else im 2024 that would make a good home server build that doesn't break the bank? Something a bit newer?
The new EPYC 4004 line looks nice if you don’t need a ton of pcie
That is a nice case but I would rather not have the expander. I am sure there are advantages but I guess the OCD in me just wants 1:1 lol. I am happy with my new 12 bay NAS but will look into this case for future plans.
Looks great inside having less cables. 😁🤘
ACTUALLY TRUE
@@RaidOwl plus better airflow 🌬️
Wow that's a nice Supermicro chassis you got there!
Hey wait a minute...
You’ve activated my trap card
The chassis looks really nice, but that is pretty expensive for an empty chassis. Ill stick with my two SuperMicro 36 bay 4U chassis instead that are only $500. Only two NVME bays on them, but I use it for mass storage anyway so that's fine.
Yep, niche products are never cheap
@@RaidOwlMust be nice to get things for free that you dont even know how to use lol
Wow, so cool upgrade by design
Nice chassis, looks like it's time to upgrade to Siena for that system so you can use all that occulink goodness without using gobs more power. Seems a shame not to mirror a couple U.2's for the VM's, probably the only change I'd make. And I'm with you 9on running core (at least for now), if it ain't broke...
240-ish W for 80-90 TB - that's pretty good.
Interestingly enough though, if I just scaled the power consumption by capacity (I'm running ~216 TB (raw) vs.~90 TB), that's a ratio of 2.4 * 240 W = 576 W, which is about where my server is, in terms of power consumption.
Moving from TrueNAS Core to TrueNAS Scale is pretty easy through the UI.
Nothing special there, however, if you are running it in a Proxmox as i do, there is one thing to do to ensure it will not hang randomly.
You have to issue the following command only if you are running an AMD (either Ryzen or Epyc) CPU:
midclt call system.advanced.update '{"kernel_extra_options": "tsc=unstable"}'
I had no issues while running Core, but as soon as i moved to Scale, it started to hang randomly. After issuing the command above, it never hanged again.
Just cancelled my order for a HL15. Been waiting three weeks and received an email saying it would be at least three more weeks. This case is out of my budget. Anyone have a good case recommendations?
Rosewill makes some good options if you don’t care about having a fancy backplane
Hi Brett! I broke out from being an Asrock mobo. Now I am a thinking individual. And I'm thinking about what if you ask Jeff the Crafter, to print you some kind of support bracket for that 3 devices above your new shiny server. They look like 3 sad dude hanging out of the windows and absolutely drunk! So now Jeff could make a video about the plan and the outcome, with a cocktail at the end. So that your wife can make one (two) as well, so that you can look at your 3 sad dude not being sad anymore, but straightened as.. straight! And drink up the same cocktail as Jeff advised to make, so all of us can be happy and I can finally go back to my mobo state and rest between to task.
Sounds like a bip?
2:40 not me with a netapp 24 bay connected with a single mini sas
Have you done a video for noobs on how to size a server based on needs? Like CPU, ram, efficiency, based on various combinations of uses? Honestly, I'm intrigued but autistic, was never amazing with 1s and 0s, and I feel like no matter how many videos and Google searches I do I'm missing out on some pre requisite information I still live the videos though. Thanks.
You should still connect BOTH PSUs even if they are on the same circuit if ONE of the PSUs fail the other will pick up the difference
Sweet chassis!
Do you still have the 3 original rosewill cages?? If so would you be willing to sell them?
I have the whole chassis but I’ll prob just try to sell that locally
Where can I buy this enclosure?
10:33 what do I get to point out that you the cpu fans are not aligned with the case air flow? :)
I orient my fans based on the position of the north star
three servers are crooked, so as not to fail, you can make guides from an aluminum corner of 50x50x2mm and they will not hang
This can just in time. I'm doing the exact same thing and I was already looking for a solution just like this for 24 HDD!
9:35 ooooooooooo aaaaaaaaa
isnt the point of redundant psu's that if a unit itself goes down, the system keeps running. i havent really heard much about people trying to use them in place of a backup solution like you mentioned. also - i think if you run them both they balance their load between themselves and become more efficient.
1U servers are just hanging around hehe.. better fix that sooner than later :D Nice upgrade btw
Soon they’ll be vertically mounted
Nice toy. Great video!
no real info on drives or speeds or total capacity now that you have upgraded - what is the weak link now besides the asrock rack
I’m mysterious
0:43 This is exactly how I migrated my PC parts to a new case
Works like a charm
@RaidOwl are you a LSU fan? Geaux tigers!!!
Hell yeah
Why the american wife trope is: the wife with a big ass glass of red wine? X)
That price though...
When the wife comes with a glas of wine to help we all know very well what kind of assistance was offered and....thankfully accepted.🎉 Shout out to our lovely wifes loving us nerds.❤
why didn't i find this case when i needed it
Hey baldy, thanks for the vid. Your sincerely, Other Baldy.
What do you pay per kWh?
$0.16 but I have solar with 1-1 buyback
I’m less than 2 minutes in but I’m going to refer to this as a sidegrade, it’s not an up or downgrade but a side step to a better path up.
Oooo aaaaahhhhh wow!
Hoo ahhh!!!
Nice !
this is what we in the biz call a sidegrade

Uuuu aaaaa woooow ich Dock love your Videos
You should have just connected the back backplane to the sata only connector on your motherboard... It's sata to sata over a sas cable... whatever.
wait...
@@RaidOwl While you can use SATA drives on a SAS backplane, you can't use SAS drives on a SATA backplane. In theory, you could've simply connected a single Mini SAS cable from one of the ports to the board, as the manual doesn't say you can't do that.
Yeah my mind went from “crap I can’t use those 2 motherboard ports for the backplane” to “oh I’ll just use them for two sata drives” then somehow went back to “wait this won’t work”
😅
Ooooo... aaaah
oooooooo ahhhhhhh
Buddy you getting nice things without mf 😊
Again ?
i had issues installing vm of scale. i finally ended up just running the core to scale upgrade and it worked fine. now running scale with no issues. (backup your config first)
excellent
be honest... the wife showed up to find out how long till the plex server was back up so she could get back to binging trash TV...
She's the one who watches real shows...I just put Bob's Burgers on loop lol
Diy server, not hp server or dell
oooooooooooooooooooooooooo aaaaaaaaaaaaaa
if only I was rich😔
Bifurcation? Split PCI-e? Haven't you heard? No!

PLEASE do not put NOCTUA FANS... PLEASE NO
Lol when did I say I was gonna do that?
@@RaidOwl you didn't but I unsub if you do it
