Hey dude, I got to meet that guy when I worked at Tower Records in Nashville. He was doing the Johnny Cash thing at the time I think. I sold him a Todd Snider CD. He was such a cool dude.
I worked with Rick Rubin coming directly off of two platinum albums on an independent label. I was young, arrogant and I assumed my previous success somehow made me Rick's equal. Obviously, I was wrong. Before Rick, I was able to deliver a project and it was never questioned (not that it was necessarily great work but, I thought it was). When I started sending tracks to Rick in late 1991, his feedback was both encouraging and humbling. He could sniff out when I was genuine in a track vs mimicking the hot shit of the day. I totally disagreed with him when he said "Baby Got Back" was the best track on the record. Oops! He indirectly taught me to stay both hungry and humble. Thanks Rick!
Amazing that you posted this story, I never knew Rick worked with you, I do remember how legendary you were... I remember seeing the baby got back music video as a kid on Beavis and Butthead - was so much fun... I then remember you had a song on the Beavis and Butthead movie soundtrack... I always wondered if Mike Judge was a fan?!
There appeared to be malfunction of the eye lubricant dispensers when it tried to play Hurt. I don't think anyone remembered to refill the tank after the Goggins challenge.
Every time I hear Rick Rubin talk, I pay attention and listen. The guy really understands the human condition, and what it means to exist. A true legend.
20:43 is priceless…”when I listen, my goal isn’t to form an opinion. It’s to understand.” Think about that. Really let that soak in. What a great goal.
"I believe we know close to nothing. If we embrace that 'not knowing' we'll have a healthier experience going through life." Very insightful. Everybody thinks they know everything now and when you think you know everything, you're done learning. This is the way.
It's amazing how Rick has been able to get so deeply involved in each artist's creative process and yet listening to each record you cannot hear any "Rubinism" in it
But if u see what he did for Johny Cash and Krishna Das etc, there is a rich fullness there, with total honesty, that wasnt there before. He has the capacity to bring the artist to their full potential and somehow, that is he's trade mark.
At this moment sitting in my truck on night shift in north western Alberta 🇨🇦 in the patch and feeling no anger ..sadness or loneliness..just blessed to b watching this podcast..thank you lex and thank you Rick.. your production skills of some of the artists mentioned has brought me back from some dark places..thank you
This is one of the best Lex interviews he's done.. For the following reasons.. 1. Lex never shuts up, and we got to learn more about Lex on a personal level 2. The brilliance of Rick Ruben is on display here.. He is a great listener and he just lets Lex go and explore his thoughts about music.. He just chimes in every now and again to make a point when it is pertinent.. It's like he is producing the spoken word album 'Lex Fridman - A Musical Memoir' 😅
I listen to a lot of lex, but Tbh I hated that lex was so gushing in this. It actually was very unbecoming and annoying. Yes, we get it, lex has an appreciation for art and music. But I didn't click on the video just for lex. I came to listen to Rick. As a fan of lex I was surprised that I became annoyed with this video. It just felt like he was showing off and the fact that he could not realize that. Maybe this was his nerves or the fact that the session was recorded off his typical location. Idk. Just annoyed.
This was maybe the very best podcast I have ever heard. Im puzzled how Rick Rubin is such a humble, down to earth and deep thinking individual and still managed to manouver himself through the swamp of the music buisness where shady people, fake friends and cutthroats, greedy record companies and gold diggers dwell. What an amazing guy. Really inspiring. Thank you Lex!
same, "real" discussions about music are great, but this is more. seeing the 2 of them appreciating the tracks equals "getting it". sometimes this happens when the host or guest gets that light-bulb moment of understanding of a concept - it clicks. that is so moving to watch music cause that.
I love how in interviews RIck Rubin always takes care to answer each question honestly, thoughtfully, authentically. There's a lot about his conduct we could all learn from and apply to our own lives.
Rick Rubin, is a wonderful human. Idk what it is but there is just something appealing and fascinating about him. It is not necessarily that he is a world renowned producer. I think it has to do with his auora/personality, he just has this calm and cool demeanor about him. While at the same time, he gives such deep thought provoking answers. Rick Rubin is the type of person I feel we all wish we had as a friend. I truly love and admire people like Rick who are not only talented but also thought provoking too.
Yes!! Rick has no pretense. He is unabashedly himself and his commitment to that authenticity has served the musicians and those who hear the music very well!
I'm a music producer and out of the thousands of podcasts I've heard, this is the best one by far! It changed the way I perceive music forever and even answered a few very deep philosophical questions I didn't even know could be answered. Thank you!
its so interresting to me the way Ricks body language changes when Lex plays a song. He closes his eyes and you can just tell he is listening to every little sound in each song and thinking about how they made it , just letting the music take over for a bit and getting into it on another level. He's in a sort of trance. it's such an inspiration seeing such passionate artists
One of the best interviews I've ever witnessed. So pure and genuine. Rick Rubin is a musical genius. The fact that he said "We all know very litte" tells me how wise and real a person he is. I feel honored to have witnessed this conversation.
I got to say that was exactly what I needed exactly when I needed it. I am going into the studio tomorrow with my band of 23 years and I am yet again producing our new record, and this conversation has put me in exactly the frame of mind I was hoping I could bring myself to be in. Thank you so much Lex and Rick. two of my favourite human beings . truly inspirational and humbling . I loved watching rick just listening to music . Magical . Thank you Le x, Thank you
@@Mrpsblobsoflowendmung lol I know a Phil Hartley, from my home town, he plays music too. I had to check ur channel to make sure you weren't him. This was one of Lex's greatest podcast from memory, there's so many good ones, but I'd say top 10 at least for me. Have a good one Phil.
1:42:12 Lex expressed joy for a moment and Rick connects with him just by opening his eyes. That sigh Lex lets out is what a man should experience more with another man. This was the most beautiful podcast moment I have ever experienced.
Didn't know Lex is so passionate and insightful about music. These combined with the greatest music producer make this episode so profound and special.
I love how whenever I see Rick talk, it always feel the same as when I saw him talk in a different video. Like whenever you see Rick, he's gonna be the same as any other time you saw him. Listening to Rick talk allows me to learn something meaningful about myself due to how authentic he is about himself
This is phenomenal advice for music producers and anyone interested in making awesome art. He really does get the points across cleanly. He's been through a lot.
Love you lex. Turn off all the automatic settings on your camera and if your guest is trying to think deeply, let them finish their thought. Ricks meaning of life would have been beautiful to hear. Can’t wait to see the next page from your diary.
I think Lex's overeagerness is a result of being nervous with Rick. Normally, I find Lex to be great about asking questions and just listening. This time he was different, and seemingly less able to patiently await the response as he normally would.
I have never thought of “nothings gonna change my world” as being negative or hopeless. To me I always felt it as comforting and profoundly stabilizing. For me this lyric, in particular, acts as a shield warding off any insecurities and worry. Nothings gonna change my world…… means stay strong and remain positive, for no weapon against you shall prosper. You are destined for the best life for yourself, stay confident in that because nothing can ever change that
The instant I read Rick Rubin in the title I prayed for an Avett Brothers mention, but I also didn't have much hope since he has worked with so many artists that there was probably little to no chance. I was overjoyed with emotionalism when No Hard Feelings was played to the very end and when he shared the story of this song. I loved what he said on music's ability to immediately unlock a deep part of ourselves. His words of wisdom on art and life as a whole was such an inspiring listen.
Typically, I don't listen to video podcasts since I like to take notes on the go. But this time, I sat at my desk, watched, and listened to the entire episode while writing my article. I lovevd watching these two have a conversation. Rick seems like a great guy and someone I would love to hang out with.
Damn Lex, this one is next-level with Rick... Your love of music -- and how powerful it is to reveal our humanity -- really shines thru and I'm happy for you...Imagining how fun this must have been to sit down and riff with one of legends. Keep going!
This was in fact, the MOST important podcast you have ever done for me Lex. This means more to me than the majority as it reinforces things I wasn't able to understand 30 years ago. Thank you for allowing me to meet Mr Rubin.
After listening to Rick the first time, he quickly became a bit of a hero and mentor for me. Amazing to see a man in the position that he's in that really gets it
@@CMClaudio1989 In a way. I wasn't at all surprised by the man I saw in this interview as it just made sense for him to be a certain way. I came in with zero expectation and maximum curiosity. I came out of it, saying to myself, " yeah, that's sounds about right."
@@RobertJMorris amazing because it's a breathe of fresh air from the narcissists and sociopaths that typically climb their way up to such positions. To me, not surprising at all, because these are the types of people I feel should be looked up to
@@CMClaudio1989 I can identify as a bit 'narcissistic' at times. Sometimes I chase after accreditation, sometimes selfishly go for the bellylaugh over logic or rationality. I'm pretty sure I'm not a Sociopath.... but I guess sociopaths probably say that by default so I'll leave that one alone.. point of this long winded anectdote is that I agree. Breath of fresh air to see someone just love a thing so much that everything outside of it (that isn't contributing to it), can fuck off until the work is done. That is music in and of itself. NIce chat mate. RJM
I love how Lex is so honest with his feelings and opinions, with no holds barred, just pure honesty. That is courage to me. This was a very real, honest conversation between two men.
This was so magical, two completely different spectrums of genius that can relate to one thing and make such a deep conversation about life. That really is music and I feel blessed to just be the fly on the wall
Best line "I'll listen" might be one of many reasons behind his success. I could listen to RICK for hours, he has such a soothing relaxing tone he makes you comfortable being in the room with him.
@esp ele i think his point is that since you have no credibility to your name you have no room to criticize someone of ricks stature. Not saying you aren’t free to voice your opinion but expect others to return the favor.
@esp ele guy calls Rick Rubin an average producer 😂, I swear God himself could descend from the heavens and there would be a liberal shouting about how he's mediocre.
I grew up in Duluth, Minnesota. We moved when I was thirteen to the east coast. Several years later as a teenager I found Bob Dylan's Girl From the North Country album and it *sounded and *felt like Minnesota, almost in a sensory, immersive way. It was afterwards I found out Bob Dylan was from my hometown. It's amazing how the senses mingle and how places have an energy that can come out in different mediums! A similar experience, I once visited Ann Arbor, MI, and driving down Main Street, I could really feel Bob Seeger's song based on the place and always see it in my mind when I hear the song. I'm glad they brought this up and thought worth sharing.
The thing I learned the most from here was watching Rick when the music plays. He’s not just listening to it, he’s feeling the experience that each piece offers. Gave me a new depth of appreciation for music.
Anyone wanting to be a producer this day and age needs to hear and feel this interview. Rubin has the ear, and his catalogue is diverse and evolved. Watching a master educate others and explaining his process is treasure trove of knowledge.
I always love listening to Rick have conversations with artists. He spoke with Andre 3000 from Outkast recently and it was great hearing Andre comfortable and honest. I think Rick's genius as a producer is that he gets the artists to be honest with themselves and makes them remember why they love to create music. Most producer are just trying to make a monetary hit and he is just trying to present the artists creation in the best possible way.
@Lex Friedman Rick Rubin, I came across this interview yesterday, 12/13/22, the very same day that I began laying down sketches for a bridge that I’ve been intent to build in my community for many years. Every Synchronicity confirms that it was also time for me to hear this podcast. As an industrial designer and as a musical artist, I resonate with this conversation in every way. Let’s work together.
He was talking about how he wished he was someone who painted and relaxed listening to podcasts, and that was just what I was doing….painting and listening to this podcast.
I also think this is the most genuine and authentic celebrity INTERVIEW ever. Period. As a huge Rick Rubin fan, this is what I would sound like interviewing him. I’d stumble, ramble, get stuck… but I’d be myself. Or at least the version of myself that’s in the same room as Rick fucking Rubin.
For me to watch 2 of my favorite “voices” talking together…about albums and life …is surreal…look at Rick re-listening…he’s closing his eyes…and is in the music….literally. His laughter and smile listening to Beastie Boys is hypnotizing. Will be watching this over and over. Therapeutic.
Thanks for getting Rick on. Rick Rubin is one of my absolute heroes in life. He’s produced so many of my favorite records and artists…he’s a wizard. I’ve loved all of his work..especially that with RHCP, Tom Petty, The Mars Volta, Johnny Cash, etc. I’ve really enjoyed listening to Rick in the various interviews he’s done in the last year or 2. Thanks man. ✌🏻
Rubin and Tom Petty worked together for two years on “Wildflowers" and that album is really amazing. It's very much Tom Petty and also very different. Deeper somehow. One of my favorite albums.
I listened to this on Christmas Day, the first half early and the second after a great day with loved ones celebrating. This is one of the best interviews I've watched. Lex- just an awesome job. Rick Rubin is so chill, introspective, and inspiring. I could listen to the two of you all day. This one moved me. Bravo.
48:33 "It's actually very difficult to not listen necessarily to the advise of others, and yet keep yourself fragile and open to the world... that pain, if you don't let it destroy you, you can grow from that" Man. That pain. Never managed to put it into words. Thank you Lex.
The song Hurt reaches me so deeply . During my transformation in to a opiate addiction , all the way down to the bottom my soul. Fighting to become free of that self inflicted burden , seeing the other side again. Hoping after all the suffering and pain I have caused just to the people who love me during this darkest time. This song encompasses all of the feeling , darkness , and suffering endoured. HURT by both NIN and Cash is how I connect to this song.
@@mrj3217 right, I'm saying Cash version finished the song as did your experience. If we only had the nin version we only have the perspective of a young man. Changes the meaning behind the lyrics given lived a life full of this experience. You have lived both, and that's the complete story
@@justincase5583 I teared up a bit would be "the more accurate description" but, that would not have rolled off the toung quiet as nicely. It was when they were talking about Johnny Cash singing hurt. It being the end of the road for an older man and the regret one can feel when their near death and looking back at their life with no chance to change or right wrongs of the past. That juxtaposed to the youthful (at the time) Trent Reznor writing/singing it looking back at regret and mistakes made in youth while still having a lifetime to make a better life for yourself and live life to the fullest. It got me in that moment. That song particularly sung by Cash has a lot of meaning and story behind it for me. Helped me get through some very dark shit. That's the context of it if that means anything to ya.
Have just fallen more in love with Lex. Probably the most profound episode for me so far. Watching Rick become immersed in the music and understanding why he is the incredible producer he is was so moving. Music is truly the greatest thing humanity has ever created.
@@visceraeyes525 nah... music doesn't equal math. it's related but not as you are saying it. music didn't exist in the universe before humans created it. music is an emotional interpretation mathematical concepts. rhythm birthed speaking. math birthed rhythm. without the human interpretation it's all just math.
Best podcast/conversation I've ever heard on youtube. My wife and I are here just embracing each other with appreciation and love. We are all beautiful in our ignorance. Thanks Lex & thanks to your guest Rick Rubin.
Yeah same here, i was a big metal head when i was a teenager, and got into the Slayer albums he did after my friends brother lent them to me...But, i also got into the Chili Peppers at around 12, so, when i realized that, the guy who made "my new favorite Slayer" albums also produced the Chili Peppers i was like "Whoa! What else?" :-D haha, and then it was Danzig in a big way
Planet Ocean. We “superior beings” always, erroneously, believed what elevated us from other animals was our ability to fashion & use tools. We know now many others do so as well. Our ability to craft music? When, based upon our limited auditory function, so much the sounds of animal kingdom is beyond our pitch. Much to be discovered.
Lex is such a special human being. Watching him and the legendary Rick listen to music together on this episode is such a simple but wholesome joy at the same time. Honestly, what a pleasure to watch that was.
I like the podcast and he has some great guests, however, sometimes I’d love lex to simplify his questioning method and let the guest speak without interjecting so much.
Lex, you are a highly sensitive human being. I have enjoyed learning more about you through your interviews. The depth of this conversation was truly touching. Two angelic souls.
You know? Before this interview I don't think I had ever heard Rick Rubin talk. But, I have a stack of albums in my collection that say, produced by Rick Rubin. It was a pleasure to link the legend to the real person and to find his just a humble human like the rest of us. Thanks for the great interview.
I had this same exact thing happen to me, literally 2days ago I saw a YT video of JayZ with Rick making the track 99 problems and looked up who Rick Rubin was and it blew my mind
I just wanna say. One of the bands they featured, The Avett Bros, drastically changed my life. Literally just typing this gives me chills. I picked up a guitar because of them about four years ago after a break up, and it stuck like glue. Music is my life, and Rick is one of my role models. So grateful to have watched this, two of my favorite people on the interwebs.
Thank you Rick! Slayer and Glenn changed my life. Beasties redefined a genre. How you gave John a platform to say goodbye. System threw a grenade into the world of metal, just like slayer did a generation before.
Rick Rubin is so interesting. hes so zen that i cant imagine him bobbing his head or just rocking out to 99 problems or red hot chili peppers or slip knot, beastie boys, Johnny Cash! I want to see Rick vibe. a finished product video from any of his hits would be dope. hes amazing
So blessed to have this conversation 🙏💕 Thank you Lex, As an aspiring Producer I feel like there's many pieces of Valuable knowledge in this amazing sit down. I Appreciate the podcast and Hope you continue to Chat with more amazing Humans and Help others by doing your part. 🤟💕
Legendary interview. In fact, I paused it halfway through to go and simplify a song I am working on. Damn, I wish I could get Rick to produce this song for me!
Lex, what would we do without you! Thank you for another enthralling interview. Take care, and as Plato once quoted “music is a moral law. It gives soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, and charm and gaiety to life and to everything.”
A young lonely, yet curious host interviews a sage who is wise, a sensitive and content God of Creation,, of music. The storyteller. Love this. Thank you. Great interview.
I often enjoy Lex's commentary but this time I felt like he didn't really let Rick finish and I found myself skipping over Lex's parts. For example, I would have loved to hear more about how Rick was able to shed the weight since I don't think that story has been told elsewhere, but Lex jumped in saying how he knows a guy too and the flow was lost. Getting Rick on the podcast is legendary nonetheless and thanks for sharing this with us!
I’m conflicted, I felt similar. But I also feel like the point of Rick Rubin is to bring out the life of the other individual. Lex is a engineer and Rubin is a music producer. Very different worlds.
@BeastReview as an AE engineer and Musician I felt he stopped the flow because he doesn't understand music that well yet... but he shows honesty and also is Rick right there in front of him that makes any average human nervous... but loves the interview. ❤❤
There is something in Rick that just gives me a feeling that all is well, and if it isn't, it still is. Rick is right, he is a coach and listening to him I feel like I absorbed good things, appreciation.
Could not agree more... The mark of a true intellectual is the vastness of the subjects and ideas they are yearning to explore. And Lex exhibits that over and over again while adding an almost childish optimism that most adults seem to lose after surviving here on Earth for long enough. He's exactly what we need, exactly when we need it.
Absolutely LOVED this interview, and I especially loved hearing this interview with the infamous Rick Rubin. He turned me on to a knew tune today, The Avett Brothers and "NO HARD FEELINGS". Such a beautiful song. I put a link to it below. LEX, I only started to watch your videos 3-4 months ago, and I have enjoyed and learned something from all of them. The first video I watched was when you interviewed your DAD. I so enjoyed watching that and listening to both of you. The apple doesn't fall far from the tree. You are truly an OUTSTANDING and extremely INTELLIGENT & GRACEFUL interviewer. With your soft-spoken style, the interactions about your own feelings about a matter; sharing your opinions, thoughts, likes, and dislikes I also enjoy hearing. You and I surely agree on Fauci. Your questions are paramount. I find your documentaries some of the BEST I've ever seen on TH-cam and I've watched MANY thousands of videos since TH-cam first went live. I especially enjoy how you insert a positive moment of LOVE with ALL your guests and ask them to provide a "message of wisdom and perspective" for your younger audience. They surely need it now more than ever since so many are dealing with strained relationships and hardships and many elders are not providing good examples. (My suggestion to that is STOP WATCHING TV especially mainstream media.) Your moments of wisdom is a such a warm and loving touch to your all of your shows, and one never knows which guest message may help someone from a fundamental perspective in their life. This is something many of us older ones (I'm in my 60s) really could've benefited over the last few decades. When I grew up in the 60s and 70s, so often we only heard about what we were doing wrong, what we should do more of, or we can't do this or that because we are male or female - too young, too old, etc. I wanted to be an archeologist since I was about 10 yrs old, I always told my parents this. I was in the public library often reading every book I could find on history and ancient ruins and I knew there was far more to history than anything I could find in books, so I wanted to go out and help uncover the human history based on artifacts and have the knowledge to know how to determine how old things really were. When I got to high school and it was time to discuss college, my parents and guidance counselor told me over and over again that there was NO place for a young woman on an archeologist dig in the middle of some desert with a bunch of men, sleeping in tents with no shower, etc. After listening to them for all of 10th and 11th grade, and having 1600 students in my high school, approx. 900 females, my guidance counselor told me not one other female in the school was going off to college for archeology. By the end of 11th grade, I finally conceded and excepted that they all must be right and since they were all so much older than me, they must know what was best for me. SO, instead, I went off to college for interior design and drafting which I loved but I NEVER stopped regretting that I didn't follow MY dreams, even today, I still wish I had at least tried to be an archeologist. We artists, regardless of our talent, walk to the beat of our own drum, we love to wander and we often see the world through a different lens. Young people with that itch must realize they will NEVER outgrow being that way no matter how hard or how many times they try to conform to what others believe is best for them when it comes to careers or even hobbies. It's critical for their physical and mental well-being that they follow "their own" dreams and the things they love to do and not allow ANYONE to tell them they can't or shouldn't pursue them. If they try something and decide it's not right for them, then so be it, it's their decision. It's ok to start over again, many of us have started over a few times and have had many journeys along the road of life because sometimes that's just how life rolls. LEX, I don't know how your videos found me, but I'm glad they did. Keep up the outstanding work and don't ever change your own personal style or your suits & ties unless you feel like it, not even for Putin!! One day soon folks will be speaking about Lex Fridman with the same high regard you bestow on Joe Rogan. "NO HARD FEELINGS - the Avett Brothers: th-cam.com/video/tFGs7HP15d4/w-d-xo.html
Here is another GREAT SONG with words of WISDOM for ALL people, especially our young people. Sometimes this is easier said than done, but in the long run it will surely benefit all of their lives. We reap what we sow. Tim McGraw - Humble And Kind th-cam.com/video/awzNHuGqoMc/w-d-xo.html
I come back to this every now and then and it reminds me that many deep truths aren't elusive and fickle, but more timeless and simple. That section about ideas is such a timeless and simple concept but following it takes you down a road that you could never even imagine.

It's amazing how Rick has been able to get so deeply involved in each artist's creative process and yet listening to each record you cannot hear any "Rubinism" in it
He calles it not recorded by Rick, but reduced by Rick.
But if u see what he did for Johny Cash and Krishna Das etc, there is a rich fullness there, with total honesty, that wasnt there before.
He has the capacity to bring the artist to their full potential and somehow, that is he's trade mark.

This is one of the best Lex interviews he's done.. For the following reasons..
1. Lex never shuts up, and we got to learn more about Lex on a personal level
Rick Rubin very much became Lex's 'coach' by the end of the podcast. It was wonderful
Brilliant insight. 👍🏼

Exactly! Your description of the music industry is spot on
Couldn’t agree more
same, "real" discussions about music are great, but this is more. seeing the 2 of them appreciating the tracks equals "getting it". sometimes this happens when the host or guest gets that light-bulb moment of understanding of a concept - it clicks. that is so moving to watch music cause that.
Seems like that very mindset might be the answer to how he accomplished it.
@@iselect1012 what is your experience in the music industry?
I love how in interviews RIck Rubin always takes care to answer each question honestly, thoughtfully, authentically. There's a lot about his conduct we could all learn from and apply to our own lives.
"Everything we make is a reflection of a moment in time" beautifully said Rick

He feels more into reality than we do. More in his feel of what's going on than in his head is my sense
He’s not ashamed of what he likes
There's a special kind of calm about Rick Ruben, and Lex brings it out beautifully in this conversation.

The way Rubin listens to music is beautiful. He closes his eyes, connect his body to the rhythm, and loses himself in it.
yes I do the same and to see that made my day
And then he inevitably gets interrupted by Lex making a comment
Absolutely love Ricks reverence for the music in his reluctance to talk over it.

Yes....think Lex needs to hold back more. Let these amazing guests talk uninterupted please !
You are destined for the best life for yourself, stay confident in that because nothing can ever change that
@forwardlife6390 I agree completely : " Nothing's gonna change my world was just reasuring."
I never heard that song before. It made my cry. I've been listening to too much metal!
The best thing about this podcast is lex playing music to Rick and Rick moving his head.

I always love listening to Rick have conversations with artists. He spoke with Andre 3000 from Outkast recently and it was great hearing Andre comfortable and honest. I think Rick's genius as a producer is that he gets the artists to be honest with themselves and makes them remember why they love to create music. I often enjoy Lex's commentary but this time I felt like he didn't really let Rick finish and I found myself skipping over Lex's parts.
