If you play this coming off Disgaea 1 and/or 2 then this game is a good follow-up of the Disgaea series. If you've played Disgaea 4 and 5 you'll likely be disappointed by the reduced characters and customization.

"Saturday morning cartoon" actually this was kinda spot on. But I do still find enjoyment from those. The inflated numbers I found annoying, it seemed like I never grew when at the start you can do thousands of damage, mid-way through the game the numbers seemed meaningless, I just looked at the percentage of health the opponent had left.

    • @derekminna
      @derekminna 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

This exactly. I cant stand the artificially inflated numbers. It robbed me of one of the joys of playing this series. When you start with 8 ATK getting to 1000 actually means something. When you start with 22,000 ATK, numbers completely lose their meaning.

Honestly I kind of hate that "silly" type of humor that has infested game writing. Whether it's nintendo with the paper mario series or god awful borderlands writing, it's barely even jokes so much as stringing together funny words like "butt stallion" or shallow pop culture references. Seeing that type of humor in a game is usually an instant pass for me.

I LOVE disgaea but i had a hard time liking 6. The 3D was not to my liking and it came at the expense of so many generic classes and monsters. The skills animations were meh and always made the screen go black for a mini second before starting.
I only got enjoyment out of it when i decided to see 6 as a spin off rather than a main entry.

D6 is in a weird D3 situation in that it's a massive mechanical shakeup with some hits (the juice bar and redone leveling), some good ideas that need more time in the oven (karma and D-Merits), and some that need to be heavily reworked or dropped entirely (autobattle and skill learning).
It's also this bizarre reflection of D5 in that its mechanics are iffy but the plot and cast are the best since the PS2 games despite being eerily similar in structure. The main differences are that D6's plot has rhyme and reason to why the worldhopping goes as it does; and the party being fully enjoyable instead of everyone but Usalia and occasionally Christo ranging from okay at best (Zeroken) to boring (Killia) to grating (Red Magnus) to Seraphina.

    • @christianboi7690
      @christianboi7690 ปีที่แล้ว

I just didn’t have a good time with it. Disgaea 5 felt like it degraded all of my favorite mechanics by streamlining the old hard rewarding parts like collecting innocents and capturing units. Adding captured units to your team was now barely preferable to creating units. All the cool extraneous, optional mechanics became super streamlined and easy to accomplish and subsequently became a necessary step in progression, making them feel meaningless, while you had to engage in and even master all of the new mechanics to beat the post game content because they limited the strength you could achieve through the old conventional means. I like grinding, but they made grinding levels almost trivially easy by giving us the innocent farm and then put a cap on those stats to push you to master other mechanics and those mechanics where fun at first, but soon became laborious and slow. I can at least see myself engaging them again, but Disgaea 6 went too far in my eyes.
Doesn’t really matter. all that matters is if you had fun. I didn’t have a lot of fun, but other did. Good for them.

    • @SBaby
      @SBaby 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@schwaansch3238 The postgame grind is always boring in Disgaea games. I've said many times that when you have a big postgame in your games, you need to integrate it into the main plot. I will say this unto my dying breath, Dragon Quest XI has the best postgame I've ever seen in an RPG. It's criminal that so few people mention it, because this is how you do a postgame right.
But the thing is, in Disgaea 6 they automate a good portion of the grinding, enabling you to just let the game grind on autoplay while you go do other things, so you don't need to be there all the time. So they at least improved that.

Disgaea 6 actually cuts out ALOT of the grind though, and allows you to automate a good amount of it. You can automate the game to instantly beat maps (assuming your characters are strong enough to beat the map), and then set it to repeat and go eat and come back after you finish to see the improvements to the party. And since you autoheal after every map now (you read that right), you pretty much never have to be there to grind.

    Disgaea 5 > Disgaea 6
started playing during the original Switch release.
    story is kinda boring.
graphics are pretty gross compared to past installments.
and gameplay 6 just made everything way to easy. it's like a preschool version of any previous Disgaea.
the more i played 6 the more i wanted to play 5.
    all in all....
if it's your first tactics game then i think it would be good to get you into the genre.
but if you're wanting a good tactics game i would recommend
    Disgaea 5 - Swith/PS4
    Triangle Strategy - Switch
    Agarest War - 360/PS3
    Spectral Force 3 - 360
    and of course any....
    Final Fantasy Tactics - PSX/GBA

    "too anime"
i mean that's, pretty much the whole appeal of disgaea
if i had to say, it's probably the most japanese srpg with cultural references and anime references as well as to other games which are all strictly japanese, so i guess it would make sense for anyone to be turned off by disgaea thinking it's a deep and serious game series
as a former diehard disgaea fan since 1, i pretty much knew what i was getting into, but the only thing i didn't know was that the writing quality of every successive disgaea game gets worse and worse
as for why i say i'm a former fan, disgaea just isn't the same anymore
it used to be great with the halloweeny theme in 1 and the hotblooded youngster (nekketsu) vibe in 2, and they both had pretty good writing by NIS standards, but it just went downhill from there

Maybe you shouldn't of reviewed this one. It's a huge step back from what the games had become. They removed a lot of the features, and this is the first 3d model game compared to the old sprites. The battle system isn't the same. Monsters don't work like they used to.
It's just not a good disgaea game compared to how 5 improved a lot of it only to have it all removed for this budget title version.

My gripes with disgaea 6 is not entirely on the game itself, but with NIS. D6 was released on the NS and PS4 last year. This year, they released D6 complete on the ps4/5. They however ditched the standard version and only released the deluxe edition for $80. It runs like ass on the switch on launch, but it somewhat worth $60. Fast forward to now, if you want to play D6 complete on the ps4/5, your only option is to over pay for a game that is imo mediocre even for a Disgaea game. While i think D6 is decent, its not worth $80. Worst of all, NIS know it too.

Disgaea 6 is weird to me. It is enjoyable, sure, but I find it so odd that it's missing quite a number of features from many of the previous titles. I can't help but wonder if the switch to 3D had something to do with that, and if it did, maybe sticking to hand-drawn graphics might just be the better approach for this series. (Or maybe if they stick with 3D, they could polish it and make it work in later titles) Although one difference I appreciate is how I never once found myself needing to grind while playing this one. This is the first Disgaea game where I could get through every single mission without needing to devote hours to replaying past missions. I don't mind grinding in traditional turn-based or action RPGs, but with tactics games, it can feel beyond tedious.

I played disgaea 1, 2, 4, 5 and 6. I have to say that 5 is the best and if it had some of the quality of life changes from 6 it would be the perfect disagea game. When I played 6 it felt like a step back and a tiny step forward. It does feel cheap and the animations feel lifeless, but some of the auto battle stuff and how they managed to make HL, and reincarnation relevant longer than any previous games was nice. It makes no sense my Duping was taken away, that was one of my biggest gripes. I'll give it credit for being an entry with interesting ideas and direction but the execution isn't as good.

"If you've played one, you've played them all."
I felt that since 3 and have moved on because of 5. Yeah, they're comfort food... but its juvenile and failing to iterate upon itself at all. The shift to 3D is sad because its PS3 baked-lighting quality and although 6 sold decently... I wouldn't justify this series continuing on - but I know it will because its mobile counterpart has raked in some dough.
Automation is such a mistake to me and almost a slap to the face. They know that a majority of their playerbase doesn't want to put the effort in to grind through dull battles, so instead of doing anything to correct that flow... they turned it into a mobile experience? That's a letdown.
I don't understand the lack of evolution from Disgaea. Its stuck being a "Saturday morning cartoon" grind from the 00's. Feels like 20yrs of nothing.

It was these funny and different animations and un-expected humor that lead me play this game. If Disgaea going to lead down this path being lazy then don't expect me to continue buy this game. I was put off within 15 mins of the game. Specially with the AUTO-COMBAT system. You might as well add full auto mode and let the game play itself.

Disgaea 6 was hard to get through due to how bored I was with the characters, maps, story and overall gameplay. As for graphics, the jump to 3D cut down a lot of the crazy attacks characters would do in the earlier games as well as a lot of the classes the series has. They cut the amount of classes to about half of what 5 had and lacks many of the playable characters from past Disgaea/NIS games that were playable in 5 Complete.
Then you have how poorly it was optimized for the Switch, which confuses me.
I have no idea why this game has such poor framerate when the Switch can run more demanding games like Witcher 3, the Xenoblade trilogy, Doom, Doom Eternal, Dragon Quest 11 and BOTW. Even though these games have issues as well running on the Switch.

    • @SBaby

@@SBaby I own both games. My point was based more on the fact that a game like Disgaea 6 has no reason to run as bad as it does.
Witcher 3 on the Switch has a lot of issues but for what the game is it's more understandable why it has problems given the weak hardware it runs on.
If it can run The Witcher 3 regardless if it runs it poorly then it should be able to run Disgaea 6 with no problem.

I've been a fan of Disgaea since D2 and La Pucelle tactics.
This game to me is what is wrong with everything in gaming nowadays. Terrible art direction to save on development costs as drawing the previous styles are more expensive. Highly forgettable characters, removing what made Disgaea unique in being able to make your own unit however you want. Want a god slaying 6yr old mage with an axe Thor couldn't lift? Want a brutish tree demon that could cast universe shattering magic? Well not anymore!
And to top it all off they introduce.auto-play mechanics that the entire game is designed around!!! They introduced mobile-game mechanics to a beloved series.
Every single one of those points are already soul crushing for such a huge fan, but to have them all implemented in one game? Well that.... That is why in my eyes, the Disgaea series finished at Disgaea 5 for me.
This game is an abomination and I hope it's lost to time because it is one of the biggest disappointments one of my favourite developers had ever released. I felt more betrayed than Arya Stark at the Red Wedding.

I LOVE the characters and story of the original “Disgaea”! (Honestly most of the characters are great and well-written in all of the games. “D4” Desco is awesome!!!). Besides the original, the it’s sequel “Disgaea D2” and “Disgaea 5” are good with “D5” having the best version of the battle system. However, I haven’t heard good things about “D6”. Especially its performance on the Switch which sucks because I like the series.

This channel is settling in to a mood of dismissiveness and negativity. All these "So You Don't Have To" videos make me think you're going to trash the featured game and I've been engaging with this channel's content less because of it. But it seems you liked D6 in the end?

Of course I liked it. Just because I title the video that way doesn't mean that I don't like it, it's just a way to title a review

The AI can be super-customized in the full game which is very handy. Now we have Disgaea 7 coming up which is supposedly the REAL game after this which was more of a 3d test run. Time will tell.

only disgaea game I played was D2 on PS2 never finished it lol.
doesn't seem like the franchise has changed much besides finally 3D models, still childish humor damn.
the Switch version looked awful, nice to see the models smoothed out on playstation
