The P-38 was the first model aeroplane I built back in the early 90's, my dad bought it for my birthday as it first flew on the same day (27th January). Fantastic looking aircraft with an interesting history.
@@renatoigmed Interesting! I think mine was an Airfix (sadly destroyed long ago-I must have been around 8 and so once construction and painting was complete I played with it too much!).
9:04 - This 109 pilot really went full on *_"Praise the Lord and Pass the Ammunition!"_* mode. 300 rounds per MG and 65-200 rounds for the cannon depending on variant and he held the trigger down like he was in a paint shop at Ford factory.
8:33 actually gave me anxiety, something about the 109's determination was unnerving, just watching it get the perfect lineup and waiting to shoot you out of the sky
In 2009 I was at an airshow where they had a P-38, supposedly the only one with functional superchargers. After the flying was done I got to sit in the cockpit--you can bet that was a moment I got a photo of.
Howdy GS from an old AF Vet. Been following a while now and finally subscribed. gotta say I love seeing more IL-2 content. That's where I hang out most of the time. I found your "Play the hand..." video far more relatable than PNJ (Pointy Nosed Jet) vs PNJ. Made me ponder.....Lagg-3 vs BF-109K mayhaps..hmmm? Runway ahead & altitude below!🛩
Being the age that I am, the closest to this I had as a kid was aces over Europe and aces over the Pacific. And you had better bet I spent hundreds. If not, possibly thousands of hours flying every aircraft I could, but absolutely loving my time in a p-38 in both Europe and the Pacific.
The thing about the nose cannons is that they do not have to be “converged”. Wing mounted cannon, being mounted much further apart were aimed a bit crosseyed so they would converge at some arbitrary distance forwards. It meant that there was a very sweet spot distance at which the bullets would all hammer the same thing. When firing further than the convergence distance groups would spread out and target effect would considerably worsen. Initial convergence settings were too far. Military analysts were too optimistic as to the marksmanship of pilots so they anticipated longer range fires. Veteran pilots would get their techs to decrease convergence distance because they understood that they were more likely to be firing at closer distances where time on target would be shorter so they really wanted to pour on the lead on a smaller spot. The P-38’s nose mounted cannons were clustered close to each other so they did not have to be converged. They could dump a pile of concentrated lead at any distance which made them really effective.
GS "Oh! I killed the paratrooper. I don't feel great about that." Me "Oh maaan...his legs are still attached to his torso. Oh wow, I don't feel great about my disappointment."
According to the "Law of Armed Conflict", pilots in the chute are non-combatants (unless they are shooting at you). However, armed paratroopers in the chute are in fact combatants and legal to shoot.
The P-38 is my favourite aircraft. I do have a thing for the Mustang that can't be denied but DCS ruined that. The P-38 Lightening is beast. It's got awesome guns for shredding enemy aircraft and for strafing but it's also an awesome fighter and bomber.
I'm sure you know the P-38 was armed with a 20mm cannon in the nose also....and the highest scoring American Ace in WWII flew the P-38 in the Pacific Theatre.
2:35 "those things are full of paratroopers too" not anymore...more like canned mince meat. 12:11 - Bro, that 109 had THE SHOT. how do you mess that up?
Great video! No survivors next time!! 😂Paratroopers are armed enemy combatants in the air as well as on the ground. Maybe that helps you conscious. Your videos are always top notch.
LOL!!! Talk about losing your opportunity.. going in for the kill then losing it infront of your enemy.... the epitome of idiocy... repeat after me... DOH!!! Oh, that made me laugh....
I am surprised you didn't use the Dive Breaks when doing your bombing run. You managed regardless but it is easier to be accurate with the dive breaks out, plus less chance of losing control (Rudder/Elevator compression ? ... I forget the name for it).
To all the comments about committing a war crime by eliminating that paratrooper: While it is a "war crime" to shoot air crews parachuting from an aircraft in distress... paratroopers are universally EXEMPT from such protection, because their nature as soldiers that drop into battle via parachutes automatically makes them legitimate military targets in all circumstances. It's totally legal & even encouraged to gun them down if the opportunity presents itself. No treaty protects paratroops, and all military codes of conduct say they are valid targets. To avoid confusion in the air, paratroops usually have a different color parachute from aircraft crewmembers. It should also be noted that the whole concept of "war crimes" is entirely relative, and based on a gentleman's agreement between nations. Any rule may be violated at any moment by any belligerent, often with minimal legal consequences. Violating a war-crime rule opens the door for both sides to retaliate in kind, and said rule may thereafter be considered null and void for the remainder of the war, or until diplomacy restores the rule. "War crimes" are not like national laws, and there are no supranational police to hunt down war criminals during wars (that comes after a war, only to the loosing side). War crimes committed by the winner are typically ignored. Prosecuting "war crimes" is not about justice; it's about revenge. During WWII, Japanese pilots routinely shot at parachuting American pilots, viewing them as disgraceful cowards for jumping out of their stricken planes. In retaliation, Americans rarely made any effort to rescue shot-down Japanese pilots, typically leaving them for the sharks. Neither side took many pilots prisoner.
Hello my friend, there is a way to launch the AGM12C and B missile. You can direct it manually, but through the TV screen of the A4E Skyhawk aircraft. Can you try it?
You can kill paratroopers, but you're not supposed to shoot pilots that have bailout. The difference is that the paratroopers are still active combatants while the pilot isn't.
Shooting paratroopers with a chute? US submarine commander "Mush Morton" routinely surfaced his combat sub in the pacific after sinking a japanese freighter that was alone so he could get his crew to machine gun the surviving merchant mariners that got off the freighter, and they were completely defenseless.

That final “maneuver kill” is one for “moments of death” clips. I spit my coffee. 😂
🤣🤣🤣
I was about to ask if this counted as a maneuver kill…
@@bjw0007 Absolutely

Fantastic looking aircraft with an interesting history.
omg same with me but in mid 80s It was my first Revell scale plastic kit that I built when I was about 11 years old.
@@renatoigmed Interesting! I think mine was an Airfix (sadly destroyed long ago-I must have been around 8 and so once construction and painting was complete I played with it too much!).
Same.
That last 109 must’ve been a war thunder player

I bet his guns were dry when he dived on GS' landing approach.
If I'm not mistaken, by the laws of war, paratroopers in their chutes are fair game.
They are. It's in the LOAC, Law of Armed Conflict.
8:33 actually gave me anxiety, something about the 109's determination was unnerving, just watching it get the perfect lineup and waiting to shoot you out of the sky

As fan of the Bronco i like the Lightings too; that german was "so nice" that he wanted to greet you with fireworks on your way home, happy holidays!.
You also have a 20mm cannon in addition to the 4 Fifties. The P38 has some incredible and concentrated firepower for sure
I saw this plane in another video you did recently and I'm glad you decided to feature it today. My favorite WW2 plane by far!
Heard a rule of thumb once that one gun in the nose is worth two in the wings, and this video certainly demonstrates it. Struck by Lightning indeed!
Ground attack at low level is different from air fighting & takes practice, ... as he found out apparently 🔥 Good film, thx.
Man, so glad you’re doing the WW2 stuff absolutely my favorite content! Awesome flying too!

GS falling in love with a round.
Hadn't had that on my bucket list this year.

The yelling from the soldiers is edited in right? It’s always been a nice touch to the videos!
That Bf-109 is a proof When the "hunter and prey" moment switch in second. 😬
Love the p38
12:34 did not expect that!😅
War is a terrible thing. But, lets not forget-its about killing your enemy. The objective is to win.
Finally the p-38! Love this bird.
not the reference man......NOT THIS REFERENCE 😭
this is just what the japanese called it
Haha!
Something about a cup and soft serve???
Great video GS, love the 38
12:07 I think his chivalry kicked in at the wrong moment and it was too late to pull up 🤣
According to the "Law of Armed Conflict", pilots in the chute are non-combatants (unless they are shooting at you). However, armed paratroopers in the chute are in fact combatants and legal to shoot.
All pilots in WW2 would have had a sidearm and therefore technically been an armed combatant
@TheGalantHamburger Nope. His weapon was the airplane. He's not a ground troop. His pistol is for self defense. It's not an offensive weapon.
Love the WW2 conrmtent KEEO FEEDING IT TO ME
At least that paratrooper wasn't in an outhouse!
“I’m telling you the 50-cal is a nice round”
well done mate, been following you for years, love your vids , keep them coming
Thank you been waiting for this video
12:48 well that's a manouvering kill...
Thank you GS !
That was freaky how the Paratrooper stopped mid air and just hung there like a guilty flag after you shot him, lol.
Thank you! I love the P-38!
Absolute favorite - P38 - is amazing.
Typically, the P-38 had 4-50 cal and 1- 20mm.
2:18 Rare footage of superman.
You, “Dukes of Harvard” the 109 on the runway. 😂
Can’t wait to see this one. My favorite plane from WW2

P-38 was always one of my favorite aircraft. It got Yamamoto.
WarCrimes with GrowlingSidewinder. What a great gift. Lol
Wow. Actually had a red mist from the chest of the guy dangling from his chute.
Great job really enjoy the ww2 videos
Crazy thing about german paratroopers is they had 1 main line instead of 2 so they spun around. This was a big issue at the isle of crete
I'm sure you know the P-38 was armed with a 20mm cannon in the nose also....and the highest scoring American Ace in WWII flew the P-38 in the Pacific Theatre.
22yrs in the infantry and my lady love was the M2 (50cal). I'd mutter sweet endearments to her as she sang. My side chick was the M79 (40mm) he he he.
it's the way he would have wanted to go out. pancaking himself on the runway.
damn. the fact that the game lets you do that adds even more realism to it
still waiting to see a p51 over Desert Storm lol
The screams when the paratroopers fall😮😂!
The fork tailed devil!!
My fav plane of WW2, P-38 very underrated plane of that war.
2:35 "those things are full of paratroopers too"
not anymore...more like canned mince meat.
12:11 - Bro, that 109 had THE SHOT. how do you mess that up?
F/A-18E/F vs F-35C (Fox-2 fight) would be epic to see! Navy vs Navy : Old vs New
Day 182
"Holly! It's your ****ing landing light!"
Would love to see more WW2-era airfield, train, and ship strafing.
Dude I've heard about maneuver kill, but this has to be a new thing "landing kill" 😂
Great nose art on that P-38.
Great video! No survivors next time!! 😂Paratroopers are armed enemy combatants in the air as well as on the ground. Maybe that helps you conscious. Your videos are always top notch.
5:15 Roast in peace, my dude
3:56 that wasn't very Christmasy
will he ever fly the Il-2 in Il-2?
i think he has done it long while ago
LOL!!! Talk about losing your opportunity.. going in for the kill then losing it infront of your enemy.... the epitome of idiocy... repeat after me... DOH!!! Oh, that made me laugh....
2:40 Winnetou!😂
~2:40 now we know why the FG-42 is as rare as it is....
Forked Tailed Devil in the House! Krauts hated that plane - fast, agile, very robust and lots of firepower.
I-L Sturmavic it is the box that rocks party on.
Gunned paratrooper respawn as Bf-109 pilot and tried kamikaze GS after running out of ammo. 😂
Great landing 😁👌😎
I am surprised you didn't use the Dive Breaks when doing your bombing run. You managed regardless but it is easier to be accurate with the dive breaks out, plus less chance of losing control (Rudder/Elevator compression ? ... I forget the name for it).
That might explain the pilot trying to ram hahaha
That last guy probably saw you shoot the paratrooper. Lol
No 20mm cannon on that P38?

RIP to the 109 pilot of all time
It's never a warcrime the first time..
German pilot must have thought he was flying over Red Bird Airport
that last 109 pilot defintely an exchange pilot frm japan
Hello my friend, there is a way to launch the AGM12C and B missile. You can direct it manually, but through the TV screen of the A4E Skyhawk aircraft. Can you try it?
Favorite aircraft of all time I think it's against the Geneva convention to do that But war's hell
A maneuver kill is still a kill.
When Jason Bourne lands a plane...
Flying the jug. nice :)
Was the P-38 the only fighter to be controlled with a yoke rather than a stick?
I wanna see more 20 mm canon
That dude in ME109 came after you because you killed his brother in the parachute,
GS comitting Warcrimes, 3 Days befor Christmas. 😮😂
You can kill paratroopers, but you're not supposed to shoot pilots that have bailout. The difference is that the paratroopers are still active combatants while the pilot isn't.
electronic dive flaps are the j-25's 'cobra button'...just sayin'
Hey, can we see the same video like this but fly inside of the " MESSERSCHMITT ME-262" please
You can indeed kill people parachuting down...killer!
Still wanting the A10 vrs A4
"Witness Me!!!"
(in German)
I thought the P38 also had 20mm cannon in the nose
Yes I mention it in the text in the video
P38 had a 37mm cannon not just 50s in the nose
20mm. The P-39 had the 37 in the nose.
p-38 for the win
