Saturday we had a rescue call for this sweet little girl. 🦘
She is a 13 month old, Western Grey Joey that got caught in a fence and was found by the property owner, lying on his front lawn, 20 meters away from her mob (Family).
We brought her home and had a vet nurse, Vanessa come over in her own time to assist. Vanessa bandaged her wound and put her on iv fluids to give her the best chance.
Unfortunately her foot wound had exposed the bone which is a long recovery. The skin will start the granulation process in forming new tissue overtime.
With regular bandage changes, antibiotics to prevent infection and medication for pain, she will begin to heal.
There are a lot of different health issues that can affect her progress because she is still a wild kangaroo who hasn’t had human interaction before. However, all precautions have been thought of and treated accordingly.
We believe she deserves the best fighting chance possible.❤️🦘
We have named this precious girl, Luna.
The following couple nights were long, sleeping with her to bond and earning her trust. Luna has had other kangaroos close by like Simone, Kiki, Freddy and Grandpa Swampy who help her feel safe in an unfamiliar environment.
Although we are tired, it makes all the difference seeing her bright eyes and knowing she is content and happy.
A long way to go but all the early signs are promising. A bandage change will give us more indication of her progress but her wellbeing and happiness is also very important in her recovery.
A wild Joey is so much more complex than a handraised Joey and therefore requires baby steps to fully earn her trust.❤️🦘
Today was Luna’s first bandage change and thankfully everything is going to plan.
Luna was an extremely good patient, she knows we are helping her. Luna only has one damaged tendon and the rest are intact. We now wait patiently as the tissue starts to grow over her exposed bone. 🙏
