Adore 3 things about you, (Dame) Laura: the way you were raised (three cheers to your proud parents!), your staying power vis-a-vis the challenges along the route and the triumphant style in which you proved the Dutch bureaucrats so myopically wrong. At my fossile age of 73 I may be closer to the geriatric extreme as a singlehander who is presently stuck at Hiva Oa by the Covid-19, however, that citcumstance in no way hinders my admiration for your achievement!
Until now i have lived on 3 continents and done lots of crazy things in my life. One of the reasons i'm this way is that in the early 70ies my father planned to immigrate to Australia and in the end didn't do it. I listened to several conversations that started with "what if...."I vowed never to do this and it has become the best motivation for me
You are a beautiful young lady in every sense of the word Laura Dekker. I am inspired and in awe of your passion as well as your compassion for others. You continue to set an ideal example for any youngster who dares to follow their dream the way you have. If I could turn back the clock and live my life over with you as an inspiration, I'm sure I would conquer the world. As for now, I'll continue to follow my dreams with renewed strength and compelling determination by keeping your story in the forefront of my heart and soul.
This issue of people wanting to dictate what you can and cannot do for your own good, regardless of whether it is actually in your interest is a strange thing, in people in general, but in this country of the Netherlands especially. Now during this Corona crisis, you can see a lot of this "bemoeizuchtig" behaviour again and it's really really annoying. Sorry you had such a hard time. I always thought you were and are amazing. Bless you Laura!
In Italy they (parents) would have been put out of parental control and she under foster care, no Netherland's end to the story. A FATHER and a DAUGHTER. My compliments.
I think one of the most impressive things about your book is how when your dad met you to work on the Guppy, is how you "dry-docked" it with the outgoing tide. Pretty ingenious.
I think Laura and her Dad are very knowledgeable and experienced in the cruising arts; Laura probably knew that this method is often used in places with a large tidal range, though usually against a wall, so when she saw the pilings that probably came to mind. Of course, the pilings had to be strong enough, so she checked and asked around (described in the 5th out of 8 videos she recently posted on her circumnavigation).
Dear Laura, I have been following up your story since I discovered you on TED Talk. I think the German speaking countries make up a sizeable chunk of your target audience. I heard you speaking German, try to do interviews with German speaking media in their native tongue. The audience will forgive when you struggle with words and expressions. BTW, I am happy your father gets so much credit, I have always thought he deserves a lot.
What a brave young woman! Laura Dekker is a great inspiration. Women in sailing should be in the spotlight much more often. That's why we filmed Susanne Eliasen from Denmark: she sailed alone in the Pacific: th-cam.com/video/EnhVk0Ykom4/w-d-xo.html
There are quite a few cruising contributors on TH-cam who are women. A current single-handed female circumnavigator th-cam.com/users/WindHippieSailingfeatured is Holly Martin, daughter of a couple who circumnavigated mainly on a Cal 25 in the 1990's and won prestigious awards. Like Laura, born during the voyage.
Let's be real,... it's something you must expect from responsible authorities to exercise some push back on plans to let a 14 years old girl sail around the world,.. alone. In 99,99% of the cases this would be a bad idea. So, in 99,99% of the cases it would have been the right action taken by the Dutch authorities to take positions and use the legal instruments they have to involve the independent judiciary to decide in these matters.
Dear Michiel, You are absolutely right that it is logical for an authority to question such a venture. And I nor my family found that strange. If they had simply looked at my case and decided based on the evidence it wouldn't have been such a big problem. But they didn't... the way they handled the situation, the odd games they played and the mental twist they played on me and my family, that's where it became really bad.
@@lauradekkerworldsailing | Sorry to hear that,.. It happens that these kind of procedures get their own ugly dynamic. There is a law, an application and ego's, while wisdom is not always involved, or considerations doing justice on the particularities of the case. View it, in retrospect, as just one of the hurdles you had to take.
I think that's rather an unfair comment. Search on "sailing la vagabonde greta" to see the videos of Greta Thunberg's eastward passage across the Atlantic with one of the most popular sailing couples on TH-cam. You will get to know Greta that way. Laura and Greta are very different people with quite different skills and goals in life, and both have done remarkable things at a young age. You and I no doubt have much more in common with Laura, but Greta has achieved something remarkable in being able to exchange views with the most powerful people on Earth and to be taken seriously as a force to be reckoned with.
This old fossil doesn't think so at all. Laura was speaking in her third language and choosing her words carefully since she guards her privacy closely. She also avoids boasting in any way, while still explaining her unique upbringing and achievements. To understand the import of her observations, I suggest you read "The Coddling of the American Mind. How Good Intentions and Bad Ideas are Setting Up a Generation for Failure", by G. Lukianoff and J. Haidt. Laura is the perfect antidote to the ills Lukianoff and Haidt so vividly describe. I wonder if she finds the time to read a book like this.
Inspiration to all of us. Big compliment to Laura and her father.

Your dad must be really proud. We need more parents like him. He should write a book on parenting.

the Intro gives me goosebumps. Just like the German Commercial Version, always. Wish you all the best Laura!

Her father could write a book about Sailing, showing how it helps to understand Biomimicry.
Sailing can provide a good experience of Biomimicry the Art of living.
Laura, you were great, as always...It is not easy to respond pleasantly to stupid journalists.
We think alike about this :D

Laura ist ein echtes Vorbild im Gegensatz zu Greta.
....man kann es wohl nicht besser beschreiben !

You need a cowgirl hat.
