+Peter from Germany I'm thinking of another young sailor, Abby Sunderland, who had to be rescued from the middle of the Indian Ocean. She got much negative publicity after that. I grew up in Chile and I leant how to sail in the Netherlands. Laura is the perfect example of a Dutch New Zealand young WOMEN girl who has identify her talents and have embraced them. She is a women who does not go with the flow but with her personal flow and that is what life is all about it! Not everybody wants a house, a husband, money, car and then die as she says. Aimee Loftus You need to give your parents a slap in the face. I travelled west Africa at 15/16 then cross Gibraltar by yacht to Spain and walked to Portugal to meet the family, this took me about 2 months. (I was in no rush) I know not everyone has money to travel, but there are many books that can teach you how to save. And knowing how to read and speak english pretty much guarantees safe and competent travel.

True. I want to do something like this when i leave college, and even though my parents can't physically stop me, they keep trying to find ways of making it so i won't go.
She's got one heck of a story to tell her children and grandchildren, traveling the world like there's no boundaries, sailing the seas, love it, keep adventuring girl, the world needs more people like you :) - fellow teenager
why some negative comments, this is fulckin crab mentality if you guys want also to sail the whole world why not do it youre self, like what she did. it was a milestone for her and she achieved it.
You have that heart to follow your dream to your destiny. The reason for choosing the sea isn't the sea itself, but its openness that set you free. Proud of you
Without money you would not be able to sail the world. Thank to your parents, you did it. I totally enjoyed seeing your adventure, and congratulate you for it.
Exactly. Glad someone pointed that out. I think some people are just jealous that they haven't realized their own potential yet, or succeeded in anything worthwhile.
But dont talk about Netherlands being about money then. Parents paid, bribed Dutch government to not arrest them for her not attending school etc. Without money from Holland she would just be another Dutch girl stuck in Europe.
I showed 'Maidentrip' to my Grade 6 (12 years old) students in Thailand, because they tend to be quite infantile, to show them what is possible if they just try. The girls reacted especially well and it bought up the issues that they don't need men (if you've ever lived in Asia you'll get what I mean)...this young lady changed and inspired many of my students to rethink their perceptions. She's a wonderful role model for kids around the world.
I'm a 16 year old guy. I've taken an interest in learning about sailing and that's what lead me here. This girl will probably never see this, but I want to commend her for her incredible bravery. I would never have the courage to do something like this alone. I wish you all the best in life, and, no matter how weird this sounds, I am very proud of you and what you've accomplished.
why are you so sure that would or could never garner that amount of courage? she had a reason. objectively speaking, if you do have one for any enterprise, defying your limitations is imperative. You will never garner courage for anything unless you have a reason you believe in.
I have a ton of respect for her and her parents. I am 36 and while raised on water, my life has been dictated by a life of compromises that regardless of what other people wanted, never drowned my desire to be back on the water. We have two 16 year olds and this really makes me reflect on myself that her parents raised a young woman with the skill and confidence to set out on such an adventure herself. She may seem *rich* because most people are caught up in living lives we are told are the 'grown up' way to do things, which leaves little wiggle room for sailing when you are trying to keep up with the Jones. We work to survive, she's surviving to live her dream. How anyone can not be happy for that is beyond comprehension.
+Celine Oriet Because this constant competition to be the "youngest to do this or that..." unnecessarily put kids at risk. I mean, where does it stop? Should we let a 5 year old try this just because "it's his dream"?
+tampicokid Her parents were not rich at all. When they bought that boat it was almost a wreck. With hard work and help from sponsors and other people that journey became true.
+tampicokid You talked about rich parents, didn't you? There are many other kinds of adventures that sometimes cause expensive rescue operations too. If everybody stays at home there won't be any. Where do you put the limit? Millions of dollars are wasted in other ways too and money circulate. If you were thinking of the other sailing girl, Abby Sunderland (her parents weren't rich either), who had to be rescued from the middle of the Indian Ocean. It was expensive, but also a good test of the rescue capability in real life.
I thought incredible drive, then I seen the comments below and ill admit i laughed even though most were negative. It's just comical how much hate comes with witnessing something amazing. I did however notice what a beautiful boat she was sailing, but doing something like that takes a lot of passion and drive and something I dont think growing up with money (if she even has any) will instill in someone. Everyone seeks a different path in life and hers is truly beautiful and the fact that she is living her life is true beauty. We should all be the best people we can be and thrive together! Its amazing at her age because it's so rare well in the non third war countries to have a serious drive at that age and make it happen. Good on her!
Great Parents Product of Parents that respect their children. Let your children be as independent and self directed as soon as they desire and when you look back... You'll never regret it.
What is wrong with you people. Who cares whether her parents have money or not. Clearly to sail around the world is a huge accomplishment and should be congratulated not scorned. All the money in the world will not help you in a squall or storm in the middle of the pacific or any other ocean so good for you Laura. You have accomplished what most people only dream about.
Actually money makes a HUGE difference. The skills involved are negligible thanks to modern technology and materials. Sailing around the world has become so easy there are now more teenage circumnavigators than we can keep track of.
I couldn't disagree more with you. When you're alone NOTHING is negligible, or you end up dead. Money is (in Laura's case) only a tool! She had no sponsors...
Heh :) You are mistaken. When she was 13 she sailed solo accros the channel to England, without informing her father. To put htis in persepective; the channel is considered one of the hardest sailing areas in the world. When english customs called her dad to ask him to pick her up, he replied: she sailed there alone, she can sail back.
Thankfully she made it, with all the things that could go wrong in undertaking a task such as that. Remembering hearing about this years ago before it happened.
"back at home, they're only thinking about money". I agree that life shouldn't be just about working until you die but it's easy to talk like that when you start out with your own sailboat at 16.
i did have travel 1000 km alone with my first motorcycle at 16 yo , it was awesome. i did it again farther only at 24 and realise i want to travel for the rest of my life.
Yup Polynesian islands is a beautiful place. I grew up there half my life and now reside in cali. This girl is lucky she has the time to travel the world at such a young age and solo which idk if that's a smart idea but I ain't hating. I wish her luck.
Good for you and your journey. It is great to follow your dreams and passions in life. It is unfortunate that some people in this world don't see the accomplishment you have made. Keep the sun on your face and the wind at your back :)
brave girl, this is epic! I am fond of traveling too! Have already flew around the. world and. visited every state in the us driving! Sailing around the world would be glorious! Congrats on your achievement!
No it doesn't it means she wasn't "solo". If there is a issue at sea and your by yourself, You only have you to rely on. It makes the stakes and stress very different. Compared to having a chase boat or small camera crew with you where there is a safety net. "Solo" means alone without anyones help or support. Jeezus where did you people go to school?
I watched this documentary on Netflix as well. It was very good. This is a life I had come from that I want to someday return to again. Capt. John Banister, AMS
You can admire her accomplishment as a sailor, yet note her immaturity in criticizing people who work to support their families (starting at 3:08). I would love to sail off into the sunset, but honor and duty prevent deserting my familiy. She is supported by her family to do this, and self righteously criticizes us for supporting our families. She needed a better editor.
***** Thank you for interpreting what she meant. She was self-righteous in criticizing people who have responsibilities. Nearly all of us who work to support our families also enjoy the amazing things in the world. To accuse us of just chasing money was ignorant and should have been edited out. Since it was not, she really wanted to criticize.
some family's save up $40k plus for there child so they can go to college and university to work a good job 40+ hours a week for the rest of there working lives while you have amazing family's like this that see the world as a bigger picture and instead buy there daughter a sail boat to travel the world and most importantly live life the way she wants to. no two people are the same right?.. now which would you prefer?
i was just defending the family from the hate comments tom.. your comment has changed my view on you so you have left me no choice but to rename you "floater" a turd that floats.. i think it's quite fitting for you
"When are you leaving?" "I don't know." "I need to know when you are leaving." "lol It's a sailboat. Whenever the winds' are right." Her attempting to answer his question and give him the information he wanted despite him not understanding that it is impossible to say for certain. No wind? I can't go anywhere sir. I'm planning on leaving Sunday. What time? I don't know, what time is the southern wind arriving?! poor girl :)
The Earth is already flat. You cannot straighten something that is already flat. Flatness of the Earth has been proven with a laser beam. She appears to be a loner, so how can she talk to anybody? She must be a flat-Earther herself, as I am assuming that throughout her journey she saw no evidence that water can curve.
Laura is awsome and that she is young doesnt mean thats she cant sail a boat. I think thats she has more experience and feel for sailing then most sailors that are twice as old. I saw some comment about rich people and their kids.... Jealousy is not gonna get you anywhere. Respect other people for what they are doing and what they accomplish. If you have such a big mouth grow a pair of bigger balls and fix it for yourself whatever that might be, Probably 26 inch wheels on a very ugly, bad designed car... Respect for Laura
God morning to all im Alberto a. Mondilla jr from lukban province of quezon Philippines amazing your bravest girl i like you try to tour here in the Philippines
A lot of jealousy going around. Yes, it takes money to sail, it doesn't mean this is not an accomplishment. It takes money to become a race car driver or a tennis pro. A lot more money than it takes to sail. People should stop passing judgement on others. Way to go Laura! It's a dream of mine to sail solo to the South Pacific and you are an inspiration to me. You have the right attitude. People have become robots and fall into this this thing called consumerism. Don't buy the house, the car and all the bullshit that comes with this. Stay free and ride with the wind! But remember, it's not about the destination, it's about the journey.
So cool! I grew up sailing with my family and always wanted to sail across the Atlantic ocean solo!. One day I will do it! Something so peaceful about sailing solo and just being away from it all.
MasTube That comment was for people saying you can do anything if you have the drive, which is obviously false and for people who claim that she isn't rich and it's not that expensive.
They aren't absolutely poor, nor are they filthy rich. The boat was bought in awful condition and her dad with a bit of her help and some, were able to finish the boat after months of repair. She also had to fight her governent (for a year-she wanted to do this when she was 13) for her right to do this. The govt also tried to take her away from her parents, due to them allowing this crazy idea. So she had to deal with that too. I think, it's absolutely amazing for a girl like her to make use of the resources she has to the fullest.
Heyyy I love the channel,I just sold everything I owned to buy a sailboat to start sailing around the world :) thanks for the inspiration, just made my first TH-cam video hahaha it’s actually doing pretty good
When I’m sixteen I am not allowed to go any where after dark and during day also a fix time was there . But the main thing is here that she has brave heart👍🏿👏
An incredible achievement i'm sure! How can a 14yr old girl be aloud to just "circumnavigate the globe" , "by herself"..when,if a parent takes their child out of hospital to go elsewhere to seek better treatment...half the world's police are out looking for them to arrest the parents and bring them back...?? What's that all about? Concern for the child's welfare was the cry.. Anyhoo. Anyone up for sponsoring Laura to obtain a pilots licence? She could then be the first human being on Earth to FLY "around the world" from NORTH to SOUTH and back to where she took off from in the NORTH! Filmmaker Jillian Schlesinger could document the entire historic flight!!
If it was a solo journey who filmed it? No offense meant. I think its wonderful. I love sailing my Hobie AI and find it extremely liberating. It was when I saw more of the video of her running around on the island that I began to question, lol. Maybe it was just a friend she made in her travels on the island and she was like, "hold my go pro and get some shots of me", or something like that.
HELP ME ON SOMETHING. Good for this young girl sailing all that way. I was riding around in my town on a motorcycle and thought that was cool. She says she sail alone but I see what seems to be a boy in many shots and taking pictures of the journey. So she wasn't alone, not all alone.
in the last decade there have been a rash of these, but none like Laura. the rest had sponsors, and many were doing solo non stop trips. Laura did this on her own, with only the help of her parents, and not very much money. it should be mentioned, her father is a boatbuilder, so most of this was sweat equity. she chose to do it with stops, because she wanted to actually see some of the world she lives in, not to just do some stunt for attention. respect to her for her singular accomplishment, and it is my wish that more people had the kind of adventurous can-do spirit that she does!

She's a Ball'sy young lady, if I was her Dad I'd be a Very Proud Man!!!!
Your a Rare Bird in this crazy world! And I wish you all the best Lassie!
I watched this documentary on Netflix as well. It was very good. This is a life I had come from that I want to someday return to again. Capt. John Banister, AMS
I'm 16! And wow this is crazy but incredible!! I'd be so scared 😂😐
This girl is a legend
You can admire her accomplishment as a sailor, yet note her immaturity in criticizing people who work to support their families (starting at 3:08). I would love to sail off into the sunset, but honor and duty prevent deserting my familiy. She is supported by her family to do this, and self righteously criticizes us for supporting our families. She needed a better editor.
She meant people need to learn to appreciate the world around them instead of following around the cash ignoring the amazing things in the world.
***** i'd expect better from you tom
i was just defending the family from the hate comments tom.. your comment has changed my view on you so you have left me no choice but to rename you "floater" a turd that floats.. i think it's quite fitting for you
shit 16 year old girls solo sailing accros the globe and I'm 15 just sitting in front of my macbook i must do something right now
You can still beat her result.
this summer is the first time my friend and i travel to another city backpacker and its fell awesome
+razak iqbaal ; This could be the start of your great life adventure! Carry on doing that sort of thing while you can. Good for you, and go for it :)
You are a chosen one. God bless you and keep you safe
Wow. Amazing person. Much inspiration, such wow.
Wow I am 16 and I’ve done nothing with my life how depressing 😭
"When are you leaving?" "I don't know." "I need to know when you are leaving." "lol It's a sailboat. Whenever the winds' are right." Her attempting to answer his question and give him the information he wanted despite him not understanding that it is impossible to say for certain. No wind? I can't go anywhere sir. I'm planning on leaving Sunday. What time? I don't know, what time is the southern wind arriving?! poor girl :)
So inspiring!! Nature , god what a beautiful gift it is
Simply admirable!
Congradulations young lady! more power to ya! Yahweh bless you in your travels and all else!
Yes may Adonai bless her
Wish there was more people like her
this girl needs to speak with Flat Earthers and straiten them out
they would say she's fake and made by CGI and editing, she doesn't exists
The Earth is already flat. You cannot straighten something that is already flat. Flatness of the Earth has been proven with a laser beam. She appears to be a loner, so how can she talk to anybody? She must be a flat-Earther herself, as I am assuming that throughout her journey she saw no evidence that water can curve.
searcherT FLATTEN them out amirite
they would just say she sailed in a circle and never saw the edge
@@CrazyPets0 these things called humans dont understand science
Laura is awsome and that she is young doesnt mean thats she cant sail a boat. I think thats she has more experience and feel for sailing then most sailors that are twice as old. I saw some comment about rich people and their kids.... Jealousy is not gonna get you anywhere. Respect other people for what they are doing and what they accomplish. If you have such a big mouth grow a pair of bigger balls and fix it for yourself whatever that might be, Probably 26 inch wheels on a very ugly, bad designed car... Respect for Laura
This is incredible! Fantastic!
I do not know a more brave person than her
God morning to all im Alberto a.
My big love ...LAURA DEKKER.
...I LOVE YOU!!!
What a brave kid..amazing
Loved this documentary. Inspired me to take sailing classes this summer!
I saw your video today...so inspiring....lots of love from India
she mayb got wat she wants but she still finding wats she needs ....cheers laura hope u finds it..
+thedelta445 : She was already an experienced sailor and knew a lot about boat-handling repair & maintenance before she started the trip.
Youngest person to sail around the world with stops and assisted. Not trying to take anything away from her still a great achievement.
wow, you did amazing thing
She is going to be a survivor in the Water World.
I heard about Jessica Watson but now I found out that there is other girl that did the same?
What a brave girl!!
That's living
Where does she get the money for repairs and docking? Also how did she afford a sailboat in the first place?
Some people are born with money, you know that don't be stupid.
It's called a job. Save, Save Save.
she wasn't rich... she was saving since 9yo to buy a boat... search more about her..
Heyyy I love the channel,I just sold everything I owned to buy a sailboat to start sailing around the world :) thanks for the inspiration, just made my first TH-cam video hahaha it’s actually doing pretty good
i would take this over office job 8 to 5 anyday. shit.. i would sail today. but i have zero knowledge in sailing. and have no money either ;(
+Mazxlol ; So have you furthered your knowledge of sailing yet?......... but....
+DaggylMc Gra lol nope!
exploring is such lively life way to live
Brave girl well done.
Jessica Watson did it NON stop and unassisted.
When I’m sixteen I am not allowed to go any where after dark and during day also a fix time was there . But the main thing is here that she has brave heart👍🏿👏
Amazing!!!
Très belle initiative, félicitations à toi, bon voyage et bon vent.
I read her story on the book about "Qouite Power" book, and this got me intereting to watch this inspirational Girl.
Wow you are having so much fun in life!! Keep it up be the explorer which is the human nature.
That's really mean to reach your dreams. No matter what!
Brave girl
I ran into her into her recently so down to earth amazing person
Amazing 🌠
i need a girl like this in my life!!!
UNBELIEVEBLE
How did she take dumps? Did she throw it into the ocean?
HELP ME ON SOMETHING. Good for this young girl sailing all that way. I was riding around in my town on a motorcycle and thought that was cool. She says she sail alone but I see what seems to be a boy in many shots and taking pictures of the journey. So she wasn't alone, not all alone.
r a cooper watch the documentary very informative.
she was 13 years old when she went alone from Holland to England
