    Try adding a large spoonful of tapioca starch (or tapioca flour) into the vegan version. I make something similar and it help create a better crust, and more so gives it more of a custard-like texture! :)

    Here in Brasil (and in Portugal) we call this RABANADA, and it's very popular as a dessert for Christmas dinner. There are some differences in how it is done. For example, we don't mix the milk and the eggs toghether, and we fry those in a lot of oil, just like french fries. The result is more like a pudding. ;)

    First..you are one of my favorite TH-cam cooks. Cooking at home is something that started about a year ago and it has really changed my life. I used to eat out pretty much every meal. Anyway...one of my favorite series you have done is Pizza (there is a point, stick with it). At one point you talk about yeast, but in the US the only option I can find is dry yeast. I bought the book Josey Baker Bread (which is great and he has many videos as well) and he gets into a sour dough starter that I have made from scratch. DUDE! I **MADE** yeast! So wonder if I can use that in the pizza dough? Also, the French are known for bread. I visited France many years ago and someone told me that (because of the French Revolution) the law was you could only sell bread in France on the day it is made. Is that true? Still true? I heard the reason was French people are less likely to revolt if they have food in their stomachs. Maybe making croissants is beyond a quick TH-cam video recipe, but what about French baguettes? Or other types of French bread? That was my favorite! Fresh French baguette with jam and coffee. Shit! I may move to France soon. So good. After seeing this, really think something on making bread would be great. Since making French Toast really requires uncut bread, which you don't find in the US. Thanks, Alex!

    • @FrenchGuyCooking
      @FrenchGuyCooking  8 ปีที่แล้ว +40

      Love your comment bro. So much wild love in there :) I made a video on how to make French Rustic Bread there : th-cam.com/video/1r6jV-MaQuc/w-d-xo.html
      Also, it's true that Bakeries here only sell freshly baked bread. But it's like everywhere some of them are awesome, some of them just reheat frozen sh*t. So stocked you made your sourdough starter, seems lie you're hooked ! I love that. Keep it up

    • @Margar02
      @Margar02 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Jason Bunnell you can easily find uncut bread in the US. It's at the bakery section of the grocery store. If they don't have any that day you can just ask them not to cut one the next day or go early when it's all stocked.

    • @ermutanda3802
      @ermutanda3802 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Why would a baker sell old bread? What you said happens in Italy too

    • @willbouffard
      @willbouffard 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      What is better for a business? Sell old product for a discount and make a little money or throw all that product (bread) out and lose all that product and profit.

      fresh bread never gets old here, if you enter a bakery almost at closing time you'd notice that 99% of the bread is gone

  • @ryandevries5407

    Thank you for your video. My version of French Toast is a super guilty one! For my egg wash I use egg nog. Which is great because sometimes you can get different flavors, and if I'm up for it, sometimes I make it from scratch. I don't stale my bread!! Instead I use a very dense think slice of a Demi loaf. It can withstand the soaking because it's already firm. As for toppings....I emaserate strawberries and roast and caramelize pecans
    I would add a photo but don't know how.

    More oil for the vegan version; oil in the batter, oil in the pan to stop it from sticking. Also grapeseed oil. Higher smoke point. Use over ripe bananas and you'll need less maple syrup also prevent sticking.

    I am a vegan and I actually pass on the maple syrup, add vanilla bean paste, and add a wee bit of sugar instead,. Then I add cornstarch to the batter. I use a nice ceramic non-stick pan and it is always perfect. I love my cast iron but it has some sticking issues with this recipe. I had an inspiration from your first french toast. I sprinkled sugar onto the wet batter, then cooked it, this created a crisp french toast. I am looking at my bag of french pearl sugar and am thinking of experimenting....... You rock French Guy!

    i always do mine with 2 bathes, one with milk/sugar/vanilla then another with the eggs and a tiny bit of cinnamone
    and for the cooking use salted butter instead of any kind of oil (i'm living in western france where we're kind of extremists about butter cooking...)
    as for the choice of the bread, get any of wich you prefer, i tend to like french toast made with stale bread which actually explains the habits of the two bathes :) but when i'm doing this as a dessert for my friends they love it when i go with brioche, salted buttered caramel, and cooked apple, like a super guilty "french toasted tatin"

    I always make them without sugar but salt or seasoning that I put on top after cooking, makes it a savory version of "french toast" maybe not everyones cup of tea, but definetly my favorite, and you can also make open sandwiches that way, its basically a pimped egged-up bread, and you can do so much things with it...

      But he did use animal products. Why are you trying to justify his behavior of blending baby chicks in a masserator on their first day of life? ..Seperating mothers from their calfs and they will never get to see each other again, cause the milk that is meant for the baby calf, is fed to humans. There is no excuse for animal abuse. He could have just made the vegan version. There is no need to sacrifice any lives for that dish because no animal deserve to be abused.

    I’m a little late to the party but growing up my family always put peanut butter on pancakes and French toast. If you put it on immediately it gets all melty and you don’t need much to impart a lot of flavor. I suggest milk to drink if you try this as it pairs well with the sweet/nutty taste.

    favorite topping : chevre cheese and honey
    I like it simple but add less sugar in the batter and more salt as i am on the savory side, but i won't skip over the sprinkle of sugar to make it caramelize, great tip. usually only top mine with a tineyyy stream of honey, but the chevre takes it to another level

    Get bread that's even thicker, cut it most of the way in half, of at least clean cut enough that you can put toppings IN the french toast. Pump in strawberry or blueberry or even raspberry preserves and cream cheese, then close it back up, soak it shortly, then pan cook like you would normally. It's amazing, and no need for sugar on the outside.
