  • In this video, I put some new rods to the test. I bought three 7' Heavy Action Roughneck rods from Academy on clearance and took them out to the Tennessee River. It was a fun morning with several striped bass and a couple blue cats being caught.

Yes! It’s most of tackle and rod companies sadly. I can’t afford those crazy high dollar rod and reels. I drive a semi for a living. I have 50.00 per rod/reel combo. I do buy my catfish rigs from a company online though. They are reasonable and it saves me a boat load of time.

This is why I love this channel. I love your stance on the pro staffers. Trying to sell people stuff they dont need. Most of the fishing gear made today is made to catch the fisherman not catch the fish. The flashy color rods and the extra pretty graphics. Its just a gimmick. I've had the same ugly stick rods and abu reels for striper fishing since the early 2000s. Never had one break fishing I've broken them in the tailgate but never had one snap on me while fishing.

I've got 2 two piece "tiger" catfish rods that are a decade old. They were sold as combos with a junk reel for $20 each. They've worked great and are still cooking. They're only 7ft though. I fish from shore when the weather is trash and want something just a touch longer for that. I'm going to add another rod to the collection soon 👍 keep on keeping on

Good test for them cheap rods though.. I have some old wright/mcgill trout poles that I have had since the 70's that still work great.. poles are like any other tool cheap or expensive.. know the limit of your tool and stay with in the bounds and it will work for you a long time. Knowing how fast Stripers start dying, please let them go much sooner, Sir.
In the Santee lakes we can catch and keep them so it isn't an issue unless they are too small.
IMO those rods were excellent. Perfect load for the bite and outstanding for the fight.

Great outing Justin. Stripes can sure be fun. Those inexpensive rods are doing well. I see you had two thumbs down. They must be looking at your hat. lol. There are always two in every crowd. Thanks Justin.

Considering the amount of fishing done, picking up $20 rods seems very strange. Generally you get what you pay for with rods and reels though the quality of cheaper tackle now is generally excellent.

You should make a video how you keep your shad fresh for fishing trips say you work and don’t have time to catch shad right before going fishing what’s the best way to keep it fresh from getting soggy say if you freeze it for fishing??? Just a idea I’m sure a lot of people would be interested in hearing that from you..
