What a great tutorial. Many thanks, never used photoshop before and I have something half decent to show the client! Thanks for your time. James Carvell. Durham

Benefitted SOOOO much from this tutorial!!!
Question, however: when I export my shadows layer - sketchup is also including the surfaces as colored, and not just giving me the shadows. Any idea why?

Need to be sure you start from a "hidden line" view, otherwise you've still got shading on.

Why not doing the design in material-based layers and skipping the color part by going with 'color by layer'??

This method for the "colour select" export is far too unwieldy. Create a new scene that only stores style and shadow settings. Use a style that renders the model without textures but with the materials' underlying colour . In the shadow settings select "use sun for shading" but do not display the shadows. Adjust the light setting to 0% and dark settting to 100%. This will render the model with no lighting information so that materials on all faces are uniform as their local colour. When used as a layer in photoshop can achieve perfect selection of the materials using 0 tolerance magic wands regardless of how saturated these colours are so no futzing around with the materials is required. As long as your other style and shadow settings are stored in another scene, can toggle back and forth without doing a bunch of "ctrl-z"s.
