Hi James that water in the machine has probably laid stagnant for years, they never quite fully empty! It could be a good idea to put a cleansing tablet in the machine and run it through a hot wash without any cloths in it of course. And the washing machine has it own pump so need for a gulper. I'm pleased for you that it works.
This should be titled " A man who seems never to have used a washing machine before 😬"
You might want eco washing powder if you are going to empty into the cut. Also there is something called ‘Guppy Friend’ that can contain all your washing in a bag inside the machine and stops micro plastics from clothes going into the cut, the canal life and the water system- just a thought.
Our beko quick wash 30 degrees takes 30 mins, we've had the machine 12 years with no issues, we've also got a beko fridge freezer which we've had since 2001 with no issues, reliable brand without the hefty price tags 👍
What’s more tragic than you watching an entire washing machine cycle? Me watching you watching part of it! 😂😂 Everyone’s already said it, but you must have had that on the longest setting including a pre-wash. There’s sure to be a quick wash option.

The washer will shake less once the machine has been leveled and the feet are on a solid spot. As far as the color of the water I'd imagine it looks like that bc 1) there's always water left inside the machine so it's more than likely molded up and you're seeing what was sitting stagnant in the pipes and internal reservoir.
I also feel that since it's been sitting inside while you're doing all that work on the boat it may have picked up a lot of dirt and debris inside, it'll more than likely clear itself after a few loads have been run through. 👍👍
That's a "high Water efficiency washer" so it doesn't use much water and the washing tub only fills like 3rd of the tubs maximum capacity so around the 1/4 or 1/2 point of the glass on the door, it's not like the old school stand up versions we grew up on that used 20 Gallons for a single load. So you should be good. 👌
Sorry for the novel James lol but I just remembered they make mini clothes tumble dryers that can run as small as a microwave so maybe look into that bc air drying is a pain.
I just stick mine on a quick wash. 30 min. Job done.
James you can do a quick wash at 30° will usually take 30mins. Use a faster spin,that way clothes will be less wet and dry quicker. 😊
Maybe put some Calgon through it on a hot wash, it’ll remove a lot of the build up that’s inevitable when a machine’s sat for a long time x
Oh my you set it on to long a cycle but you learn and defi need to put it on with a cleaner tab to get rid of dirt the beko washer is very goid we had one fir years good look for next time the oldies 🤞👍🥰

The washing machine water is black because the machine has not been used for a while.. you need to flush the unit.. place 3 or 4 dishwasher tablets into the barrel and use the hot wash cycle
Completely agree, whilst he has the water bottle to drain into he should do a hot wash with a cup of bleach to fully clean the inside of the washing machine and then do a wash with the dishwasher tablets to rinse it fully before putting his clothes in 🤓

We have become washer and cooker. If clothes aren't too dirty try time saver option about 30 mins to do.
A pair of Marigolds and a bottle of washing up liquid is much cheaper than a lazy persons dishwasher 😉
I had a Beko set up with a thermal mixing valve so the water goes in at 35deg but use the cold wash. Heating element never comes on so power draw is minimal, easily achieved with 2000w pure sine inverter. Chuck your clothes in on a half hour delay, set off cruising and the wash starts once the engine has heated the calorifier, genius😊.
Saturday night and I watched a video of a bloke watching a washing machine, I don't waste my evenings. lol. All seems to work good though James. Once the walls, floor and ceiling is done the rest will come along quickly.

Look into Loch Dishwasher. Small factor aimed at restricted space. Modest water use. Mine washes very well.

If you've set a 20 degree wash, I doubt if the heater is going to come on at this time of year. Water that's been sat in your tank is going to be at ambient temperature. Expect about 2kW draw when it's heating. My machine uses about 50 litres of water for a standard wash, and 40 for a quick 30 minute wash.
I have a Beko dishwasher that's still going strong after 14 years. Economy cycle uses 9 litres of water, which is less than a sink full.

The first fill is the wash cycle, the second fill is the rinse cycle.
he had it emptying three times though so he had it on a pre-wash i think.
lol, James, this reminds me of when I was pregnant 30 years ago and the husband fixed an ejected, old Miele washing machine and we were looking forward to washing the nappies. I sat on the floor at 3in the morning watching it go round and round with anticipation!! Thank you 💜 (it's still going!!)
I would get a washer cleaner and it needs leveling up then it won’t move about to much have fun lol

You can do a 40degree heat wash for 45mins or less does the job just as good.👌
Try doing it on the Quickwash setting..... it'll be a LOT quicker!
cos the machine has been sitting dry for so long you should of put it on the highest setting temp/spin cycle to help clean it out before putting a wash on
Dishwashers come in pullout drawer versions not only drop down door versions.
Most modern washing machines are made to work at lower temperatures, as are detergents. Better for your clothes too. I use a 30 minute wash cycle on our machine on the cool wash setting, works fine for everyday clothing loads, I do wash whites at a higher temperature and teatowels go on a hot wash once a week ( I have enough to only need to wash them weekly). Make sure you check the filter (usually at the bottom front of the machine) regularly and let the machine air with the door open after using as that will stop it smelling.
Thanks for showing your thinking on the galley layout. In addition to work surfaces near the stove and the sink, it might be helpful to have a place to plop items taken from the fridge. If you want curves, maybe just fat rounded corners on the overhanging work surfaces would satisfy, and wouldn't necessarily complicate the cabinets below.
That black water is undoubtedly mold, so the machine needs to be flushed, and the seal inside the door well scrubbed or replaced. Typically front loaders need to have the door left slightly ajar to avoid mold on the seal. Not sure if the mold spores are now distributed through your clothes or not.
Going forward, cold water seems to work fine for most things unless someone is sick or has peed the bed, in which case hot water is called for. For most loads a short wash/rinse cycle combined with a high speed spin seems most efficient.
You need to put it on the quick wash , it only takes about half an hour .
Given the fact that the boat was left derelict for so long with no apparent preparation for storage and given the amount of black grunge you found on so many surfaces and given the humidity in the UK in general my bet is that you have a black-mold problem. There is no telling what was fermenting in the washer all this time or possibly what died in it. At the very least I'd not be wearing the clothes that you just washed and I'd be running at least two more cycles with the washer empty but with a detergent and a goodly dose of chlorine bleach each time. Alternatively there are cleaning products made for such washers although I've never used them but in any case I'd run at least two cycles of cleaning. After that the water coming out should be clear(ish) and then those clothes could use another wash. Mold is nothing to mess with and people have been badly sickened by it. Take care.

Tip for you James, get some dishwasher tablets , not liquid ...
And every month or so , run machine with no clothing ,just dw tabs , to hopefully clear some of sheet ,from standing water

You could turn the dish washer opening towards the stern. Or just get a table top one.
Most modern Machines will use between 40-55 ltrs if not been used for a while there will be a lot of dirty water in the machine and pipe work. I have a Candy that has a 7.5kg with load sensor so it works out how much water to use and its only 40cm deep. Mordern Machins are very efficient.

The machine has been sat for years, the black water is all the water and old soap that has gone old and mouldy. I'd have run a cleaning cycle before putting clothes in.
I have a Beko - and always use Eco mode - with cold wash - and Ariel Gel which is designed for cold wash --- so you are not using power to heat water - just to run the machine !! my wash is 1200 spin short wash - all done in 20 mins !!! Might pay you to replace with a machine with these features :)
When curry's sold up years ago I got lots things cheap got my beko washer £40 maybe 10 - 12 yrs ago now n never a problem 🤞🏴👊🏴
Hi James. The washing machine test was interesting. The lack water was because the machine was laid up for so long and the previous owner wouldn’t have tipped the machine and siphoned the water out in the bottom of the machine. Lime stone descales powder and a 60degree wash and the water would come out clear. It doesn’t matter if you do cold or hot wash you won’t use any more water. The A+++ is the electrical energy saving rating hence only 200w max when you go for a 30 or 40 degree wash the heater will draw an extra 800W or more so look up the Beko user guide. If it’s not leaking and the seals and waste trap are not damp then jobs a good-un. Try a 60 degree wash with a full load of towels to get max power and total water figures to see what worst case will be when out on the cut. You will use more energy with full load. As a kitchen designer, curves are better. Less bruising! Mirror the curve for best visual. Now, I'd probably would have done a cleaning cycle a couple of times before putting clothes in!!!

Beto Daily Quick completes in 28 mins at 30 degrees. Uses a lot less water. Go for fastest spin speed. Good luck.
Yeah all my friends who have washing machines on their boats go through loads of water and are filling up every week and they are widebeams with big tanks.
My only concern is that there will be space needed behind washing machine and dishwasher for the pipework and plumbing but the markings on the floor with tape are right up to the walls.
Clean the filter located behind a little door along the front bottom of the washing machine and give the machine a run on the hottest setting with bleach inside
I will check the filter in the machine see if it’s clogged up once it’s a couple of Cycles I come out clean

Expect a 2000watt use when the heater kicks in to heat the water. Not 200 😂
Brilliant test. I’d do a disinfectant wash you get a dettol wash cleaner to clean machine out. According to my smart meter the main consumption is in the heating up so the hotter the wash the more juice it’ll use. I only do 20 degree washes. Glad it worked well. Best wishes
Congrats on your 1st clothes washing (machine) on a narrow boat. Maybe the dirty water is because the machine has been unused for 2-3 years and its full of gunky water

Hi James, plenty of sensible advice below about the washing machine, so I'll cut to the other issue - the layout. I think you'll find that the kink you've planned into the corridor between the units is too restricted. The corridor's ok (width), but open up the kink a bit.
There will be a filter in the washing machine to clean James . This may be adding to water colour. Also may i add that there are smaller and narrower dishwashers . Even kitchen top versions. Ha e a look and see what you think you can fit . I will even help pay for it.
it has been sitting with dead water in it put washing machine cleaner through it and should solve problem also uses fresh water to rinse out your clothes so will refill couple of times
Don't bother with an oven. Get an air frier that sits on the worktop. It will give you a lot more space and save energy consumption.
I use something called a Eco egg and rarely use hot water. Better for the water in the cut.

Hi James. My dishwasher (and washing machine) could open fully despite full size worktops either side and being "integrated" ie with decor doors. I think you can see them in some of my vids. I'd go full size dishwasher and have the washing machine under the steps if you can I think. Get a dishwasher with a fast cycle, then you're only looking at running the engine/genny for around 55 mins anyway - if you need to. Dishwashers n washing machines pump themselves out - no gulper required. Things like the drum spinning/rotating and pumps don't use that much power ie a couple hundred watts but heating the water is more like 2kw. If only the appliances still came with HOT FILL options! (You could look at rigging a hot fill system depending on how the machines sense water temp?) Water consumption: Dishwasher about 20 litres, washing machine rather a lot more due to rinsing etc but what can you do? I remember my heart sinking every time the washing machine was taking a good old fill. Your grundies couldn't have been that dirty - maybe was some crud in the machine?
James, have a look at the dishwashers in Wickes/B&Q, take your tape measure with you, as above mine opens fully with space to spare, I also think im using less water over all as mine generally only goes on every 2 or 3 days, but then im on my own and you've have the kiddie winks with you some times.
I have an All Powers S2000 and if you use the app I've found you can control it easier than using the controls on the front.
Wouldnt use beko, renowned for catching fire. Some companies wont insure your property if you have beko items

But you are going through a similar process that I have.
I'm interested in off grid work. Though I am certainly not off grid, I do run off solar and batteries, so power consumption is of interest to me.
You will probably find that your washing MC has not tried to heat the water at all during your tests. That will need about 2.5kw of power.
Something I want to try, when I get a scrap MC to play with. Is to wire out the heater elements and mod the temperature sensor, to allow me to fake the water temp. Then I could do a hot water fill and the mc will just go ahead with the wash cycle, regardless to the actual water temp. The power system only having to drive the drum motor.
Though even on my usual 40deg C wash, my unmodified MC only takes about 0.6kw-hr of power. Which includes heating the water.

They make dishwashers in a drawer type so it just pulls out instead of folding down. Also, there are drawer type fridges as well. Just sayin.
As for the exit water, from the washer, the color of the water may be from some escaping dye form the grays or darks instead of dirt or mud/sludge. lol And if your shorts and socks are, really that dirty, maybe wash them a little more often now you have a working washer that does not have any fees or tokens, as such.. 96-71 = 25%. That's pretty good. Though, running it at 40 degree 1200 rpm would be the normal scenario to test for most clothes.
30°C is enough for everyday clothes.

@@_-martin-_ It's been 30°C for years - my 15 years old washing machine has a 30°C setting. Modern detergents work well in that temperature, heating the water to 10°C less is the main energy saving.

James I think you don't need dish washer...you are most of the time alone, don't have a lot of dishes....wasting of money, water and energy. 😀 Good choice IMO.

James, I’ve commented before about your need for a dishwasher, I really hope you don’t get one.
There would’ve been water sitting in the machine while it wasn’t being used, hence the black water. 600 spin speed isn’t a good test and will leave clothes too wet, particularly in the winter. Run a washing machine cleaner product through it, get this from any supermarket.You’re obviously not that well acquainted with a washing machine! 🤣🤣

What are the plans for the steps? I can't imagine how the two little girls can navigate those steps. I'm 5'3" and old and I couldn't do it! The height you have is not for short legs.
So I see today that the CRT are going ahead with their proposed surcharge for boats that continuously cruise, along with something that doesn't effect me, and their increasing of surcharges for wide beam boat owners. Bit of a disappointment really isn't it. It will not directly effect me until summer next year when I will then fall into the category of "continuous cruiser". To be honest, long term marina life is not at all for me. All the best James
Your hip bones will thank you for putting curves in those edges... I get that the stove needs to stick out and force you around it (does it? Will you need all the "gubbins" that a multi-fuel stove needs?), but the dog-leg of counter space could potentially jump out and bite you when you're in a hurry and trying to go straight.
A bottle of distilled vinegar (Tesco 29p) and run it through a long cycle will clean your washing machine. Then do it every couple of months. It stops lime scale, mould and any nasty lingering smells. Your galley will smell like a pickling factory for a couple of hours but the results are worth it.

if the water was close to 20°C then the heater would not have been on for long, or your heater is broken.
on spin they can dance quite a jig, well ours can.

I don't know why folk only have a cold water supply to their machine. it's the heating element that uses the power and takes time. if you are going to have an airing cupboard style water tank and a regular source of hot water then why not plumb the washer into that as well as cold intake. you could always put the washing machine in the bathroom if that's where the hot water tank is. i think you used a pre-wash program there so you won't need that usually - only use that for very dirty items. belay my thoughts from a few weeks ago on putting the machine higher up - cheap machines have too much concrete inside them to compensate for weaker springs holding the drum stable. that machine is lovely and quiet, it won't need any cupboard space except for itself and water in and out pipes - it has it's own pump inside. i'm concerned about sleeping space for all the bairns.

Come on james lad you were really letting the side down, i hope there were no women watching. It didn't use much power because you only had it on 20 degrees and the water going into it because it's the back end of summer was about that temp. At a higher temp or in the winter when the inlet water temp is colder the heating element will kick in until the water is up to temp and they are usually about 2kw's, this only happens to the water in the wash part of the cycle the rest(fabric softener/rinsing) is done with cold water. My bosch has a max power of 2.3kw's. On average washing machines use about 800w per wash with the lower temps we wash at today. Washing powders are designed to wash the most effectively from 30 degrees up. Yes they use a lot of water to wash then rinse all that washing powder from your clothes so you can wear them. The machine has sat for a while with the door shut and that means that mould has been allowed to build up. Do not wear the cloths you had in the machine as they are now covered in live mould spores, once the machine is disinfected wash them at over 60 degrees to kill the mould spores. You can kill the mould in the machine with the hottest wash and either a disinfecting product you can buy from the supermarket or a white vinegar/bicarbonate solution(look online). The supermarket one is easier. You dont need a gulper for the machine as they have their own pump onboard that will do the job fine. Hope this helps, you did make me laugh.
So you found out for yourself why curves and corner cupboards, while pretty, are not very space efficient.
If you decide you want a dishwasher after all, instead of a slimline one which is tall, have a look at compact ones - they're full width but half height, so it will fit under the sink. They're sometimes called table top.
Most of the energy consumption of a washing machine is heating the water and running the spin cycle. Modern machines are designed to work at lower temperatures, and often can take water from hot tap which means it doesn't have to be heated at all.
A washing machine has a little bit of water inside, just in the pipes (blocks sewer odours). If your machine was not used for a while, that water will be dirty/mouldy/etc but once you run a few cleaning cycles it will clear out. You might want to check behind the detergent drawer - it might also need cleaning. Remains of liquid detergents can mould and that gunk will then be pulled into the drum and stain your clothes, yuck.
For everyday clothes a "quick" 30 minutes program at 30°C is enough, but use 1200rpm, especially in winter.
