- In this video, DIY TH-camr Jay documents installing Cali laminate floors from Lowe's in various rooms of his house. He lays out the flooring plans and runs into challenges like door jambs, transitions between floors of different heights, and fitment around appliances. With some help from his wife Stephanie on cleanup duty, Jay tackles each room step-by-step, showing techniques like using full boards around toilets and sinks. He provides tips for measuring, cutting boards to fit accurately, and tapping pieces into place. The video highlights Jay's process over multiple days and rooms until he completes the flooring project on the main level. Viewers learn best practices for a flooring installation.

Here’s a pro tip for those floors. Use a scrap piece to tap them together so you don’t damage the tongue
Yep, he figured that out towards the end of the video
I'm confused because I'm 99% sure that I learned that tip a couple of years ago on the Perkins channel.
Isn’t that just common sense to use scrap pieces to tap on for insulation ..
Duh
@@jeremyb8941 Doesnt seem to be.
The dog walking away with a spacer was too funny
hmmmmmm..... mine now......
Just stopped the video to comment on that. 😂
Nana isn’t wrong, you are very talented. Nice job!
Thumbs up for the helper 🙂. It's nice to have someone that supports you on your projects
I have a theory about the dulling jigsaw blades: The floor boards are likely not pure vinyl. What's killing the blade is likely an abrasive additive. Powdered limestone comes to mind here. It's dirt-cheap, bright white, no real supply constraints, good filler, UV resistant (so the vinyl doesn't get brittle in sunlight exposure), heavy (feels more luxurious) and stores heat. What could also contribute to the dulling is the friction heat. If the blade is used for a prolonged time, heat can build up in the blade removing its temper. This makes the steel softer and more susceptible to deformation (dulling of the teeth). But unless you want to take frequent breaks during a single cut, buying more or specialized (carbide?) blades is the most economic option. And if it's really the heat build-up in the steel, you could cool the blade with water during cutting. Do that on your own risk though, since I haven't heard anyone else doing it.
Also remember that Vinyl is usually PVC. The latter stands for Poly Vinyl Chloride. If that stuff burns you can say your lungs good bye. If you used the resulting smoke on a battlefield, you'd be in for a war crime trial. The US EPA is looking into banning PVC for a reason.
Hope the wifey feels better. A back injury can take a long time to heal. Feel better soon Steph...
This is the most enjoyable entertainment I’ve had in a long time.
The bathroom flooring you fit it like an expert Jay. You dont give yoursel enough credit my man.
Great work on the floors, and fantastic filming from Stephanie!
Nice job Jay, I was wondering when you were gonna catch on to the "sacrifical" piece of flooring to use to hammer on instead of trying to hit each new piece to make them "connect". Pssst, dont let Jamie on,,,he talks too much lmao.
Be kind to each other. Stay safe. Love to all
This still looks like it was done Jays way 👌🏻
You have to change the wax ring or the bowl won't seal, you're raising the bowl by the thickness of the new flooring. I are a retired plumber
Definitely put a new wax ring in. It was squished down and adding a 1/4 in floor it won't spring up and seal to the toilet
jay
for that door edge fit, instead of pounding the edge take a handcloth and set it on the surface, then beat it into place with a rubber mallet
You're the man btw!
Charlie wanted to help. Had to laugh when she took off with the spacer and you didn't realise 😂. Those floors look great Jay and you need give yourself a pat on the back. Great job 🙌
11am? I would have totally guessed Perkins
Remarkable work done Jay cracked it all day long well done
'Bout time Ellis. 😂
You rock.
Much love and blessings to all ❤️
Stay safe everyone ✌️😎
Jason is getting jacked!
I’m trying!
Jay great job on that floor, can’t wait to see finished product. Starting mine tomorrow - today is your favorite job - painting. LOL
Love the floors Jay! AWESOME job. I pray your wife's back feels better soon. Have a great spring break trip😁
When you came to the split door and it wouldnt open..when you layed there 😂😂😂😂 man I couldnt stop laughing!!!
That was one hell of a project - good for you for taking it on.
Good to see that Stephie helps you, reminds me of my Ex husband and I when we remodeled our home. Love watching your videos along with the rest of the gang. Enjoy your vacation! Hope Stephie's back gets better soon, back injuries take a while to heal.
Thanks!
What I was told by a pro back in the day when I started was no pattern is the best pattern
I really hope you change the wax ring on the toilet🫵
That looks great, you should get a job with a construction company they would pay good money!
God bless.
The floors you covered up are still beautiful good luck with the new floors
Pro-tip for future reference (might only be sold in Australia) diablo make a blade specifically for laminate flooring.
A+++ video Jay!!! Hope y'all had a great vaca!!
Yes! Thank you!
I think for the basement stair tread you could pull the tread and shim it on the bottom the 1/4 inch to make it flush. Unless you really want to make a new one.
Scribe the gap on the door when the door is mounted. Then you have a full-length line to plane to. Just a thought.
Pro tip
Get yourself a brasscraft angle stop and spin the cartridge out. And then swap it on your toilet. Quick way to not have to solder etc for that leaking stop.
I love the light color and wide plank of these new floors. Looking good 👍 So cute that your pup wants to ‘help” . Nana is right your amazing. Keep up with your mastery of these detailed micro precision cut projects, you will be the new Arlo.
There are two wacking tools that are helpful. One is a black plastic block with groves and bumps. The other is a metal tool. It bends down at one end and bends up at the other. This is helpful when trying to close the gap when the plank is less than a quarter inch from the wall. Ask the store where you buy the planks from. And if you use a 2x4 instead of the proper tool, go back to the store and get the appropriate tools. You can cheat and use a cutoff piece that fits into the groove. Don't hit the edge of a plank, it will break.
Ur the man Jay. The floor looks GREAT and u did it mostly by urself, which is tough. Thanks for sharing
J you're doing a great job on that floor, I'd like to give some advice. I don't know if it'll work or not but for your wife's back. I have one of these chairs called a Teeter. And it really helps stretch. You can hang up side down. Or add a somewhat of an angle, but anyway, it'll. Relieve her. I don't know what's wrong. If it'll damage her or not, but you might think about it. But I've had this for several years and it's really good for my bad back. That I have Is from working on cars and stuff all my life.
But it does pull your back and relieve all your strain And it would be Good for you too.Great For You also.
Great job Jay. A suggestion watch on TH-cam So that's how you do it. He explains and shows you how install flooring. Have a great and safe vacation.
Your Filipino fan here!
Great work Jay! You can’t see it from my house! 😊
You sound like a real pro. 😊 My wife helps me, too.
You should have added 2mm foam underlay carpet between old and new floor. If the old floor is slightly sunk into a pit in places new floor starts to make noise when you step on it.
Yeah, there’s like one or two spots that have a little creek in them but for the most part it’s pretty sound. These floors do have a little bit of foam already built-in on the bottom which I think is helping a lot.
Awesome job, Jason!
“I didn’t build this house, so it may not be square”. 😂
U did not give me enough time to get my safety glasses on I have something in my eye
Looks nice, good job! 👍
Thanks Jay..Looking forward to 45mins of entertainment, watching the floor going down!! KUTGW
Another great job Jay.
You did a great job! So many rooms to keep the flow seamless and you nailed it.
Looking forward to the big reveal ❤️
You’re so awesome man
Nice work Jay ..... Its always nice to see the lovely Stephenie !
Man, what was wrong with those previous floors?
You have done a fantastic job jay 👍👍👍
Good job from Moorea 🤙🤙🤙🍺🍺🍺
Nice work on the floor and video. Always enjoy your work and watch the lessons you learn along the way, looking forward to the next video.
Looks great jay !!! Flooring is tough in existing space !!!
I though it was gonna be Eric as a helper when you showed the time 😂
For you transition to put the floor together from you family room to your kitchen, I have found that if you use like a 5 inch scrap piece with the correct edge. I use that to engage fully and then use it to punch the two pieces together by pounding on the back side of it. this way I ruin a piece I am not using and do not chance breaking the tabs on the pieces.
I was so excited 😢
I used my band saw, my compound miter saw, my table saw, a knife and a straight edge, and yes, if all else failed, my saber saw. My Japanese pull saw was helpful, and I wish I had already bought my buzz saw.
Go see the PT!
4:19 bro you look ripped
Thanks. I’m trying.
Looking good
Looks great buddy 💯 north Carolina here
They make tongue strips to insert into the floor for when you need to work backwards. That flips the way you install the flooring! They can also be made! I’m sure Jamie could help making them! Nice looking floors!
Not for LVP. Only for hardwoods
Feel better Stephanie!!!
Looks really good
Good job buddy!
Going to use my circular saw for the first time. Gotta prep my new house for the new washer dryer I just bought with some baseboard repair. Going to look through your library of videos and perkins for tips incase something valuable comes up to make me feel more at ease on using it. Trying to be as safe as possible.
U should use scap pieces of flooring to hammer them into place. It doesn’t break the tounge off, but you’ll need multiple pieces of scrap because the will break easy, but it save your finish floor. Some flooring snaps east and some is difficult.
awesome video bud!
Love your humor and you are very talented. I love the original floor in Pop Pops room.
Another solid project! I appreciate your willingness to share your experiences, and challenges. Keep up the great work!
Jason epic task mate…. and it turned out beautifully ⚒️🍺🎉🔥🫵🏻
Hey Jay!
Looking really nice. Bet you will be so glad when you are done!!! Have fun on break.
Correction on the TH-cam channel it is So Thats How You Do That
Man, u are looking ripped. Started working out 8 months ago (also a dad and looking to be fitter) but I would like to know how you transformed so fast.
Also, great work on the floor. What a difference.
A lot of it I think is the cold plunge! I cold plunge every morning for 3 to 5 minutes. Been tightening up my diet and then try to workout 3 to 5 times a week. Don’t do any cardio just weight training.
Nice job Jason. It looks really nice 🇺🇸😎🫶🏻✌🏼
Always working and getting it done. 👍
Is the new thicker top step a concern for tripping on the stairs?
Going backwards with that flooring is tough
Your dog took a spacer you made to chomp on!!! Hope the dog is ok
Amazing work!! Q: Normally what is the lifespan of a floor of this kind?
Tbh I’d prefer the wooden floor that’s already down
He Jason I got a hallway to do if you are not too busy LOL The job is in the Czech Republic.
No worries
3:19 even if you did it still wouldn’t be jay, i’m playing lol
“Butt tight at the seam.” Words to live by really.
17:23 I thought your idea was to start at the fireplace with a full sheet. What happened? I see you had to mitre it in at least 1 inch. 19:25 I cant believe you didnt use a scrap piece to lock into good tongue and hit the scrap piece on the opposite scrap tongue. If you want your scrap piece to last the whole job, cut the tongue off and screw a 2 by 1 hardwood along the cut off tongue line and use that for the bashing place.
Awesome pro tip!!
The Perkins bros suck. Don't pay them any mind. I hope you will consider going out on your own. You have the experience now and are talented.
Did you know that you can find freshly roasted nuts on the beach on a sunny day?
The main takeaway from this informative video is that it is really hard to plan it out.
It would be nice if you could always go in one direction, but going the other way is unavoidable.
There are going to be closets and half walls and even dogs in the way.
I started in a half bath at the east side of the house and worked all the way to the west wall.
My orthopedic surgeon said I should never do that again.
Question, I have tile floors also and there old and the grout lines are huge. I want to go over them
Like your doing , But won’t the floors squeak are move going over tiles and wide grout lines?
These planks that I’m using the floors are 9 inches wide so they cover any type of imperfections or gaps pretty well. If you’re using a smaller plank, you may run into some issues?
I understand, totally makes sense. Thank you, really appreciate you getting back to me.
Take care, & have a great weekend🤗
💖
You can rip a string and change your transition.
What
I thought you had a laser level, just put it sideways to get a straight line no?
That’s why it’s better to work with someone!! Where were you two weeks ago! Lol
👍👍
Tip lay left to right.
What was wrong with the original floor?
